Have you heard of him?M: Hmm. He does have a good reputation in the political science department.W: And a well-deserved one! We just feel it is important to save some of the natural beauty of the campus, like Over-by Swing. Some of those trees are hundreds of years old.W: It is a pretty spot. My friends and I had picnics over there by the stream.M: Then you understand how we feel. We are organizing a rally on Thursday afternoon to get the administration to reconsider the parking lot plan. W: Well, I have a class on Thursday afternoon.M: But maybe you could sign this request. Were going to submit it to the administration to demonstrate how the students feel about this.W: Sure, let me get a pen and Ill sign it.M: I have a pen right here. Maybe you could let the children share the larger room and you and your husband could use the smaller one.W: I suppose that I could do that.M: A three-bedroom apartment will be difficult to find. Its one of the most skillful games there is.M: So I have heard. Dont you play with a partner?W: Yeah! When her husband passed away, her children suggested that she should move to a senior living community. A social and life-loving person, Thelma decided to do so. Shortly after she moved in, Thelma became a self-appointed activities director, coordinating all sorts of things for the people in the community to do and quickly became very popular and made many friends. When Thelma turned 80, her newfound friends showed their appreciation by throwing a surprise birthday party for her. When Thelma entered the dining room for dinner that night, she was greeted by a standing applause and one of the coordinators led her to the head table. The night was filled with laughter and entertainment, but throughout the evening, Thelma could not take her eyes off a gentleman sitting at the other end of the table. When the festivities ended, Thelma quickly rose from her seat and rushed over to the man. Pardon me, Thelma said. Please forgive me if I made you feel uncomfortable by staring at you all night. I just couldnt help myself from looking your way. You see, you look just like my fifth husband. Your fifth husband! replied the gentleman. The streets might not be cleaned. There would be no police force to protect people and property. Schools would be closed. People would become sick and diseases might spread. We would not want to live in such a city. We all want pure water and food, clean streets and good schools. We want the police to protect us from crime. The chief duty of every government is to protect persons and property. More than three fourths of the money spent by our government is used for this purpose. The next large amount of public money goes to teach and train our citizens. Billions of dollars each year are spent on schools and libraries. In fact, the US Fish and Wild Life Service is considering the possibility of taking it off the Endangered Species List. Once, more than fifty thousand pairs of bald eagles nested across the country, but by 1960 that number had fallen below four hundred. The chief killer was the widely used DDT. Fish soaked up DDT, died, and were washed up on the shores, where bald eagles feasted on them. DDT prevented eagle eggshells from thickening. The shells became so thin that they shattered before the babies hatched. Fortunately, in 1972, a law was passed to ban DDT, which saved the bald eagle from total wipeout. And since then, wild-life biologists
