spend time not doing very much使(困难等) 减少;(使) 休息,放松This holiday will give you a chance to relax. 27. entertainment n. things to do that interest and humour people 娱乐,供消遣的东西entertainment industry 娱乐业28. roar vi. make a loud, deep sound 大声叫喊,咆哮He roared with laughter at the joke. 听到这笑话,他哈哈大笑。29. humor (英 humour)n. the funny or pleasing quality or qualities of somebody or something 幽默,诙谐It is sometimes hard to understand the humor of another country. 有时很难理解别国的幽默。30. broodv., (over, on) worry, or think a lot about something that makes you sad(不快或怨忿地)想;忧伤;考虑to brood on a failing or a fault 入神思忖那次失败B: Phrases and Expressions1. make up ones mind decide 下定决心,打定主意I cant make up my mind between these two dishes that the restaurant offers.2. range from. to. occur from.to. 从. 到. (范围或幅度内)变化His feelings on the matter have ranged from bitterness to hope.The market prices of commercial housing range from 2,000 to 8,000 yuan per square meter.3. focus ondirect (something such as ones attention) firmly on (a subject); pay attention to He focused his attention on the map. 他的注意力都集中在那张地图上。The speech focused on the way the Internet influenced our life.4. drive someone crazy make someone feel very angry or annoyedHis lack of order drove his girlfriend crazy. 5. at ones best in ones best state or condition 处于最佳状态,在全盛时期This is an example of his work at its best. 这代表了他最佳时期的作品。6. communicate withspeak to; send a message to; be understood by (someone) 与.交谈,与.交流We can communicate with each other by telephone. 我们可以用电话相互交流。7. lighten upsomething you say to tell someone to stop being so serious or annoyed 放松,不要生气Lighten up, would you? She didnt mean to break the glass. 别生气了,行吗?她不是有意打碎瓶子的。8. take .seriouslytreat a thing or person as important 认真地对待某人或某事Dont take him seriously-hes often joking. 别跟他认真- 他常开玩笑。C. Language Points1. Research shows we make up our minds about people through unspoken communication within seven seconds of meeting them. (Para. 1)Meaning: Research shows within the first seven seconds when we meet someone, we form our opinion about him or her through nonverbal communication. make up our minds about people: form our opinions about people. The phrase make up ones mind also means decide. 2. Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes, causing a chain of reactions, ranging from comfort to fear. (Para. 1)Meaning: Whether we are aware of, or unaware of it, we use our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes to express our feelings. This causes a sequence of various reactions from comfort to fear.3. .we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes, .(Para. 1)attitude: a position of the body; the way one thinks and feels about something or someoneWhat is your attitude to her work? 你对她的工作是什么态度?4. .causing a chain of reactions.(Para. 1)The phrase causing a chain of reactions, ranging from comfort to fear. is an adverbial of result, used to describe the result of show our true feelings.a chain of something means a sequence of them happening one after another, for example, a chain of events 一系列事件a chain of accidents 一系列的意外事故a chain of thoughts 一连串的想法a chain of bad luck 一连串倒霉的事情5. .ranging from comfort to fear. (Para. 1)The expression ranging from comfort to fear means reactions that include both of the opposites comfort and fear and anything in between. range from: occur between certain limits or to put things in rows; order in a line or lines.range: n. a choice; a variety; or the distance over which an object can be sent or thrown; the distance over which a sound can be heard, etc. 6. .an introduction to your future spouse.(Para. 2)Please notice that introduction is often followed by to.get an introduction to a well-known professor 介绍给一位著名的教授7. . a job interview.(Para. 2) a job interview 求职面试a personal interview 面谈a press interview 记者采访a telephone interview电话采访 8. Focus on the first seven seconds. What did you think and feel? How did you read the other person? (Para. 2) Meaning: Pay special attention to the first seven seconds. What did you feel and think? How did you understand the information about the other person?focus on: pay attention to; have as its main point of interestWe must focus on our sales force as the chief means of improving trade. 9. You are the message. (Para. 3)Meaning: Your eyes, face, body, and attitudes - the whole you sends the information about you to others.10. Ive helped them make persuasive presentations, .(Para. 3)make a presentation: give a speech on sth. make a complete presentation of the present status of human knowledge of the science 11.and so absorbed in the moment you lost all self-consciousness. (Para. 5)be absorbed (in): give all ones attention (to) sth.The artist was so absorbed in her work that she didnt hear her visitor enter the room.Time passes quickly when you are absorbed in reading a good book. The structure so + adj. /adv. +(that) is used to express to such a degree as to produce a particular result, causing a particular situation, etc. For example,He was so ill (that) we had to send for a doctor. 12. Many how-to books advise you to stride into a room and impress others with your qualities. (Para. 6)Meaning: Many books that offer advice on how to make a good impression tell you to walk into a room with quick, long steps and make others feel admiration and respect for your good qualities.impress sb. with sth.: feel admiration and respect for sth.Shes always trying to impress people with her new clothes. Shes always trying to make an impression on people with her new clothes. 13. . and tell you to fix your eyes on the other persons. (Para. 6)fix ones eyes on: keep ones eyes onAll the people fixed their eyes on me, which made me feel very embarrassed. 所有的人都把目光盯着我,使我很尴尬。14. If you follow all this advice, youll drive everyone crazy including yourself. (Para. 6)Meaning: If you act in the way the how-to books tell you, youll make everyone upset or annoyed, and make yourself upset and annoyed too.If you say someone or something drives or makes you or sb. crazy, you mean they make you or sb. severely annoyed or upset. 15. The trick is to be consistently you, at your best. (Para. 7)Meaning: The skilled way is that you always have your same behavior, attitude and good qualities all the time and perform as well as you are able to.The adjective form of consistently is consistent, meaning always having the same opinions, standard, behaviour, attitudes, qualities, etc. The second statement is not consistent with the first one. 第二份声明与第一份声明不一致。at ones best: performing as well or effectively as one is able toAt her best, shes a really first-class dancer. 在最佳状态时,她真是一位一流的舞蹈家IV. Text structure1. Division of the text:Part(Para.1-2): Research shows that we make up our minds about people through unspoken communication within seven seconds of meeting them. Part(Para.3-14):The four qualities we can use to impress others:you are the message; be yourself; use your eyes; lighten upPart(Para.15):We all have within ourselves the power to make a good impression. Just be ourselves and well make it.2. Structure Analysis: A Paragraph of a Statement Supported by a List of Things:In this Passage, the writer presents the reader his ideas about How to Make a Good Impression” with a general statement that is supported by a list of examples.This is one of the most common ways to support an idea or an opinion, very effectively, especially for a short paragraph. The key points for this kind of structure are:You have to list examples, just by naming them. It is not necessary to go into details about the examples, as the list of examples is quite enough to support the point.All the examples in the list must be supporting the point you are making.
