Ourprogressinthewaronterrorhasmadeourcountrysafer,yetithasalsobroughtnewburdenstoourmilitaryfamilies.Manyservicemenandwomenhaveenduredlongdeploymentsandpainfulseparationsfromhome.Familieshavefacedthechallengeofraisingchildrenwhileprayingforalovedonessafereturn.Americaisgratefultoallourmilitaryfamilies,andthefamiliesmourningaterriblelossthisThanksgivingcanknowthatAmericawillhonortheirsacrificesforever. Soithasbeen.SoitmustbewiththisgenerationofAmericans. Thatweareinthemidstofcrisisisnowwellunderstood.Ournationisatwar,againstafar-reachingworkofviolenceandhatred.Oureconomyisbadlyweakened,aconsequenceofgreedandirresponsibilityonthepartofsome,butalsoourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandpreparethenationforanewage.Homeshavebeenlost;sshed;businessesshuttered.Ourhealthcareistoocostly;ourschoolsfailtoomany;andeachdaybringsfurtherevidencethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreatenourpla. Thesearetheindicatorsofcrisis,subjecttodataandstatistics.Lessmeasurablebutnolessprofoundisasappingofconfidenceacrossourland-anaggingfearthatAmericasdeclineisinevitable,andthatthenextgenerationmustloweritssights. Inreaffirmingthegreatnessofournation,weunderstandthatgreatnessisneveragiven.Itmustbeearned.Ourjourneyhasneverbeenoneofshort-cutsorsettlingforless.Ithasnotbeenthepathforthefaint-hearted-forthosewhopreferleisureoverwork,orseekonlythepleasuresofrichesandfame.Rather,ithasbeentherisk-takers,thedoers,themakersofthings-somecelebratedbutmoreoftenmenandwomenobscureintheirlabor,whohavecarriedusupthelong,ruggedpathtowardsprosperityandfreedom. Forus,theypackeduptheirfewworldlypossessionsandtraveledacrossoceansinsearchofanewlife. Forus,theytoiledinsweatshopsandsettledtheWest;enduredthelashofthewhipandplowedthehardearth. Forus,theyfoughtanddied,inplaceslikeConcordandGettysburg;NormandyandKheSanh. Timeandagainthesemenandwomenstruggledandsacrificedandworkedtilltheirhandswererawsothatwemightliveabetterlife.TheysawAmericaasbiggerthanthesumofourindividualambitions;greaterthanallthedifferencesofbirthorwealthorfaction. Thisisthejourneywecontinuetoday.Weremainthemostprosperous,powerfulnationonEarth.Ourworkersarenolessproductivethanwhenthiscrisisbegan.Ourmindsarenolessinventive,ourgoodsandservicesnolessneededthantheywerelastweekorlastmonthorlastyear.Ourcapacityremainsundiminished.Butourtimeofstandingpat,ofprotectingnarrowinterestsandputtingoffunpleasantdecisions-thattimehassurelypassed.Startingtoday,wemustpickourselvesup,dustourselvesoff,andbeginagaintheworkofremakingAmerica.
