TheThanksgivingtraditionofpassionandhumilitydatesbacktotheearliestdaysofoursociety.Andthroughtheyears,ourdeepestgratitudehasoftenbeeninspiredbythemostdifficulttimes.Almostfourcenturiesago,thepilgrimssetasidetimetothankGodaftersufferingthroughabitterwinter.GeorgeWashingtonheldThanksgivingduringatryingstayatValleyForge.AndPresidentLincolnrevivedtheThanksgivingtraditioninthemidstofacivilwar. Thepastyearhasbroughtmanychallengestoournation,andAmericanshavemeteveryonewithenergy,optimismandfaith.Afterliftingoureconomyfromarecession,manufacturersandentrepreneursarecreatingsagain.Volunteersfromacrossthecountrycametogethertohelphurricanevictimsrebuild.AndwhenthechildrenofBeslan,Russiasufferedabrutalterroristattack,theworldsawAmericasgenerousheartinanoutpouringofpassionandrelief. Thegreatestchallengesofourtimehaveetothemenandwomenwhoprotectournation.Werefortunatetohavededicatedfirefightersandpoliceofficerstokeepourstreetssafe.Weregratefulforthehomelandsecurityandintelligencepersonnelwhospendlonghoursonfaithfulwatch.Andwegivethankstothemenandwomenofourmilitarywhoareservingwithcourageandskill,andmakingourentirenationproud. Likegenerationsbeforethem,todaysarmedforceshaveliberatedcaptivepeoplesandshownpassionforthesufferinganddeliveredhopetotheoppressed.Inthepastyear,theyhavefoughttheterroristsabroadsothatwedonothavetofacethoseenemieshereathome.Theyvecapturedabrutaldictator,aidedlastmonthshistoricelectioninAfghanistan,andhelpsetIraqonthepathtodemocracy. Ourprogressinthewaronterrorhasmadeourcountrysafer,yetithasalsobroughtnewburdenstoourmilitaryfamilies.Manyservicemenandwomenhaveenduredlongdeploymentsandpainfulseparationsfromhome.Familieshavefacedthechallengeofraisingchildrenwhileprayingforalovedonessafereturn.Americaisgratefultoallourmilitaryfamilies,andthefamiliesmourningaterriblelossthisThanksgivingcanknowthatAmericawillhonortheirsacrificesforever. AsCommander-in-Chief,Ivebeenhonoredtothankourtroopsatbasesaroundtheworld,andIvebeeninspiredbytheeffortsofprivatecitizenstoexpresstheirowngratitude.Thismonth,ImetShaunaFleming,a15-year-oldfromCaliforniawhocoordinatedthemailingofamillionthankyouletterstomilitarypersonnel.InOctober,ImetKenPorwoll,aWorldWarIIveteranwhohasdevotedyearsofhisretirementtovolunteeringataVAmedicalcenterinMinneapolis.Andweveseenthegenerosityofsomanyorganizations,likeGive2theTroops,agroupstartedinabasementbyamotherandsonthathassentthousandsofcarepackagestotroopsinthefield. ThanksgivingremindsusthatAmericastruestrengthisthepassionanddecencyofourpeople.Ithankallthosewhovolunteerthisseason,andLauraandIwisheveryAmericanahappyandsafeThanksgivingweekend. Thankyouforlistening. Myfellowcitizens: Istandheretodayhumbledbythetaskbeforeus,gratefulforthetrustyouhavebestowed,mindfulofthesacrificesbornebyourancestors.IthankPresidentBushforhisservicetoournation,aswellasthegenerosityandcooperationhehasshownthroughoutthistransition. Forty-fourAmericanshavenowtakenthepresidentialoath.Thewordshavebeenspokenduringrisingtidesofprosperityandthestillwatersofpeace.Yet,everysooftentheoathistakenamidstgatheringcloudsandragingstorms.Atthesemoments,Americahascarriedonnotsimplybecauseoftheskillorvisionofthoseinhighoffice,butbecauseWethePeoplehaveremainedfaithfultotheidealsofourforbearers,andtruetoourfoundingdocuments. Soithasbeen.SoitmustbewiththisgenerationofAmericans. Thatweareinthemidstofcrisisisnowwellunderstood.Ournationisatwar,againstafar-reachingworkofviolenceandhatred.Oureconomyisbadlyweakened,aconsequenceofgreedandirresponsibilityonthepartofsome,butalsoourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandpreparethenationforanewage.Homeshavebeenlost;sshed;businessesshuttered.Ourhealthcareistoocostly;ourschoolsfailtoomany;andeachdaybringsfurtherevidencethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreatenourpla. Thesearetheindicatorsofcrisis,subjecttodataandstatistics.Lessmeasurablebutnolessprofoundisasappingofconfidenceacrossourland-anaggingfearthatAmericasdeclineisinevitable,andthatthenextgenerationmustloweritssights. TodayIsaytoyouthatthechallengeswefacearereal.Theyareseriousandtheyaremany.Theywillnotbemeteasilyorinashortspanoftime.Butknowthis,America-theywillbemet. Onthisday,wegatherbecausewehavechosenhopeoverfear,unityofpurposeoverconflictanddiscord. Onthisday,weetoproclaimanendtothepettygrievancesandfalsepromises,therecriminationsandwornoutdogmas,thatforfartoolonghavestrangledourpolitics. Weremainayoungnation,butinthewordsofScripture,thetimehasetosetasidechildishthings.Thetimehasetoreaffirmourenduringspirit;tochooseourbetterhistory;tocarryforwardthatpreciousgift,thatnobleidea,passedonfromgenerationtogeneration:theGod-givenpromisethatallareequal,allarefree,andalldeserveachancetopursuetheirfullmeasureofhappiness. Inreaffirmingthegreatnessofournation,weunderstandthatgreatnessisneveragiven.Itmustbeearned.Ourjourneyhasneverbeenoneofshort-cutsorsettlingforless.Ithasnotbeenthepathforthefaint-hearted-forthosewhopreferleisureoverwork,orseekonlythepleasuresofrichesandfame.Rather,ithasbeentherisk-takers,thedoers,themakersofthings-somecelebratedbutmoreoftenmenandwomenobscureintheirlabor,whohavecarriedusupthelong,ruggedpathtowardsprosperityandfreedom. Forus,theypackeduptheirfewworldlypossessionsandtraveledacrossoceansinsearchofanewlife. Forus,theytoiledinsweatshopsandsettledtheWest;enduredthelashofthewhipandplowedthehardearth. Forus,theyfoughtanddied,inplaceslikeConcordandGettysburg;NormandyandKheSanh. Timeandagainthesemenandwomenstruggledandsacrificedandworkedtilltheirhandswererawsothatwemightliveabetterlife.TheysawAmericaasbiggerthanthesumofourindividualambitions;greaterthanallthedifferencesofbirthorwealthorfaction. Thisisthejourneywecontinuetoday.Weremainthemostprosperous,powerfulnationonEarth.Ourworkersarenolessproductivethanwhenthiscrisisbegan.Ourmindsarenolessinventive,ourgoodsandservicesnolessneededthantheywerelastweekorlastmonthorlastyear.Ourcapacityremainsundiminished.Butourtimeofstandingpat,ofprotectingnarrowinterestsandputtingoffunpleasantdecisions-thattimehassurelypassed.Startingtoday,wemustpickourselvesup,dustourselvesoff,andbeginagaintheworkofremakingAmerica. Foreverywherewelook,thereisworktobedone.Thestateoftheeconomycallsforaction,boldandswift,andwewillact-notonlytocreatenews,buttolayanewfoundationforgrowth.Wewillbuildtheroadsandbridges,theelectricgridsanddigitallinesthatfeedourmerceandbindustogether.Wewillrestoresciencetoitsrightfulplace,andwieldtechnologyswonderstoraisehealthcaresqualityandloweritscost.Wewillharnessthesunandthewindsandthesoiltofuelourcarsandrunourfactories.Andwewilltransformourschoolsandcollegesanduniversitiestomeetthedemandsofanewage.Allthiswecando.Andallthiswewilldo.
