The official press conference is one important platform for the communication and exchanges. So it poses a great challenge to press conference interpreters in terms of professional knowledge, background knowledge and psychological quality. In order to know the skills of press conference, I have watched some official press conferences, and analyze several cases. I wish that the summary will stimulate me to further efforts.Key words: interpreting study, official press conference cases, interpreting goals Chapter One Oral Interpretation StudyThere is no doubt that oral interpretation plays an important role in daily life, especially in the official press conference. And the communication and exchanges between China and other countries as well as communities also become more and more frequent. so there is a growing demand of interpreters. It offers you more chances to search jobs.Before I chose this subject at the beginning of this semester, someone told me that interpreting was hard work. But I wanted to try it, at the end I chose it with my roommate. Someone say that interpreting practice is boring, lonely and so on. It is true that oral interpretation study needs enough time and efforts; whats more, you must insist on practicing during the study. In my opinion, practicing with a partner is an effective way. For example, you can read the Chinese in suitable speed, your partner interprets, then exchange. I make great progress by this way.Official press conference shows kinds of skills of oral interpretation. I have watched some press conferences and know some skills. Chapter Two Press Conference1. Interpreting based on the different culturesDifferent countries have kinds of cultures, interpreting based on their own cultures is necessary and important. To make an interpretation a success, we are supposed to master the nations history and culture; besides, wed better know the speaker well, including his personality and habit. All these do good to our interpretation.Some months ago, I watched the speech given by Obama. I was shocked by his eloquence. At the same time, I paid attention to the interpretation.Obama said that, we remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things, the time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.In Obamas words, we must know American history, spirit and Obamas goal before interpreting. Some words in this paragraph need especial attention, for example, Scripture. Scripture is full of connotation. We aim to connect its spirit with Obamas speech well, then we should study more and practice more in daily life.2. Interpreting based on the speakers personality.The United States Secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, is a successful woman; her active attitude inspires many people. She once gave a speech about “Dare to complete, Dare to care”in the Yale University. She is an outstanding and active woman in America; her active spirit made the speech a success.She said, it doesnt mean that once having made that choice you will always succeed .In fact, you wont. There are setbacks and you will experience difficult disappointments. You will be slowed down and sometimes the breath will just be knocked out of you. But if you carry with you the values and beliefs that you can make a difference in your own life, first and foremost, and then in the lives of others. You can get back up, you can keep going.In Clintons speech, we see her belief and confidence. I refer to some books and information online, I understand her especial life, the words appeared in her speech can be understood and even be forecasted. Any pessimistic words or thought wont be heard in her speech, so when we interpret her speech, we know her thought, her spirit by studying her life .Interpreting will become easier and more accurate.3. Interpreting based on the atmosphereAs a regular interpreter, good psychological quality faced on the emergency is necessary. The interpreter is supposed to lighten the atmosphere between the speaker and the audiences, including the followings: to draw the audiences attention, to make the speaker motive, to make the atmosphere more relaxed and easier. And if the speaker is angry with the audiences reaction or the atmosphere, or some cases like these happen, the interpreter must lighten the atmosphere right now. For example, we know the Apple Inc, of course, we know Jobs. He is a great man; his intelligence makes many people crazy. Surely, he is also a bad-tempered man. Once when he declared the Next was established, one of the journalists asked him a question which made him mad. He was so angry that he went out of the scene. So if you were the interpreter, what would you do? A good interpreter should have the ability to solve the so-called emergency. To lighten the atmosphere quickly and to know what to do next are significant.4. Interpreting based on your own roleAs an interpreter, doing what you should do and say what you should say is important. Dont attach your own feeling to the interpretation. What you only need to do is interpreting what the speaker says. No matter it is right or not. Express the right message and show the right information to the audience. If you do what beyond your own duty, the result will be inconceivable.For example, a young lady once interpreted for his boss. Her boss talked with a foreigner about a business connection. Her boss took this talk seriously and wished that a agreement could be arrived at in the end. When they talked about the benefit of corporation, the young lady answered the foreigner herself, because she believed that she knew the answer very well, it was just her daily work. However, her boss wanted to get more benefit from this corporation .but she didnt know anything before this talk. In the end, the corporation broke down. Her boss was so angry that she was fired.So we know that all we should is nothing but interpreting what speaker says. No your own feeling, no your own thought.5.
