1 Sometimes is has seemed that railroads were doomed 2 The Durango Silverton railroadis one of the most spectacular ridesin the world In 1960 it was nearly shut down 3 In 1883 the Orient Express ranfrom Paris to Istanbul 4 created the ultimate in luxury travel 5 It was abandoned in 1977 6 In 1887 rotary snow plows first foughtthe snow drifts in the High Sierras 7 Looking like relicsthey seem improbable holdovers from the past 8 Once this streamlined locomotivehauled passenger trains 9 at 100 miles an hour 10 But for 20 years it sat outside a museum its machinery rusting 11 Yet todaythese trains still run the rails 12 Now they evoke a more remote past 13 when trains firstbridged the continent 14 Ferried recruits to war 15 provided celebrities with an opportunityto be seen and a chic way to travel 16 gave a mobile campaign platformto politicians 17 and offered a refuge for hoboes 18 Train tracks disfigurethe countryside 19 Trains assault the senses withbrutal noise and begrime the air 20 How then account for the multitudeof people who love trains 21 When you re actually running a train you just can t get enough 22 I don t know Maybe I m just a junkie for trains 23 But that s about it 24 I bought a caboose back in the 50s 25 because I was busy riding trainsin the 50s 26 And suddenly I read in the paper one daywhere trains were going to go out 27 All passenger trainswould be taken off 28 And I knew unless I got a piece of rideon the train 29 again 30 So that s when I bought my cabooseand put it in my yard 31 There are grown men who ride toysteam trains at a mountain retreat 32 There are train buffswho choose to ride 33 through South America s Andeson a baggage rack 34 There s town in Iowathat honors hoboes 35 and there are thousandsof young people competing for the chance to engineer a train 36 There are people who harkento the lonesome whistle blowing 37 and the clickety clackof wheels on rails 38 Theirs is a worldwide fraternitywith no membership requirements beyond sharing in the love of trains 39 You ve got a sheet like thisand it tells you 40 who s sitting in every seat and every seat is assigned and 41 There are many people so enamoredof trains 42 that they take trains not to go anywhere 43 but just for the pleasure of riding 44 Each year the North AlabamaRailroad Club sponsors 45 an all day excursion on aNorfolk Southern steam train 46 Seats are always sold outand 47 there s even competition for a chance to work on the engine 48 Bill Hayslip is a deputy sheriff 49 and he loves trains so much 50 thathe volunteers on his day off 51 for the dirtiest jobin railroading apprentice fireman 52 I ve studied steam engines justabout all my life 53 I guess I was born about30 or 40 years too late 54 There s something about a steam locomotive and railroadthat s just romantic 55 A steam engine kind of hasits own personality 56 It s like a lady You have to treat it just right 57 Steam engines evokea special affection 58 Though inanimate objectsof iron and steel 59 they seem to breathewith the fire of life 60 This day the train will run toChattanooga Tennessee 61 evoking cherished memoriesof a popular song 62 I ve often wonderedif I was maybe one of those people 63 that had trainsin my bolld or something 约翰牛是世界上第一台可以动的蒸气车头 为了纪念约翰牛在美试车一百五址周年 史密森学会特地将它拖出来 沿着却沙匹克和俄亥俄运河行驶 那些火车迷都盛装 与会从各地赶来 许多人也许从没听过汽笛声 或者刺耳的刹车声 思念美国历史那一段纯朴的岁月 即使在今天仍然相当普遍 对某些人而言蒸汽车头就是注目的焦点 而其他人喜爱的是搭蒸汽火车旅行的方式 也许更多人儿时共同的梦想是 长大要当火车司机 这些火车叫做 活动蒸汽车 西摩强生热爱火车 因此在他的故乡加州的蒙地西土捐地捐设备盖了一 条迷你铁路 我想对我或许多人而言 好像跟着火车这个玩具一起长大 火车真的是很巨大的玩具 我从 1947 年开始制造这列特别的火车 1951年才完工 所以我把 4751 这个数字列在一旁 93 invented steam jet propulsion 94 Hero s ingenious device remaineda toy until 1712 95 when Thomas Newcomen developed thefirst successful 96 steam engine 97 Newcomen s engine was used topump water out of coal mines 98 One hundred years passed before 99 the first British built steamlocomotives took to the rails 100 Soon the public everywhere crossedthe threshold of a new age 101 as horses were replaced by thelatest locomotive invention 102 Today these early engines canusually be seen only at museums 103 where they seemas distant as dinosaurs 104 The John Bull is the oldestoperable steam engine in the world 105 To mark the 150th anniversary ofits first American trial 106 the Smithsonian Institutionbrought it out 107 for a run alongthe Chesapeake and Ohio Canal 108 People who love trains dressed up 109 for the occasion and gatheredfrom miles around 110 Many had never heard the hoot of asteam whistle 111 or the screech of brakes 112 Nostalgia for those seeminglyinnocent days of American history is very much alive today 113 For some no doubt steam engines are the attraction 114 For others perhaps it is the appeal of travel 115 Or could it be that so many sharethe romantic notion of growing up to be an engineer 116 These trains are called live steamers 117 Seymour Johnson loves trains 118 so muchthat he donated land and equipment for a miniature railroad at his homein Montecito California 119 I think in my case and in the case ofa lot of people 120 you kind of grew up with them as toysand 121 these are pretty big toys 122 I started buildingthis particular engine in 1947 123 and I completed it in 1951 124 And that s why I have the numbers onthe side 4751 to remind 键入文字 平民梦想网 纪念这段时间 强生和高利达谷铁路俱乐部当地会员 花址七年兴建铁路 今天他们将在长逾 1 哩的铁轨上试车 现在大家都很怀念蒸汽机 当然啦 主要因为蒸汽火车头是有生命的 你驾驶它时它会跟你说话 你可以感觉到它在活动 它会告诉你它是在卖力工作还是轻松休息 你可以从烟囱汽笛声或煤炭燃烧听到讯息 即使是上百岁的蒸汽火车仍可照开不误 强生和铁路俱乐部每年都主办一次三天的活动 吸引全美各地拥有模型火车的人 每部引擎都是特别订制的 代表几千小时精雕细琢的功夫 事实上火车驾驶会发现 蒸汽火车像难以驾御的野兽会反击人类 二寸半窄轨的火车头模型 要在七寸半铁轨上行驶 我们希望能够精确复制 1890到 1936 年科罗拉多和南方线使用的车型 喂 约翰把展示车推到旁边好吗 每天最受欢迎的活动是全家大小和亲友一起 兜 风 三部车头连接起来车头 车厢和乘客总共 6吨 我们现在共有址四节车厢 大部份是载货用的因为乘客体型 不成比例 这辆火车是 1 8标准车身但是乘客的身材无法缩小 如果要他们坐客车 你不可能加盖车顶 me of the time 125 Johnson and the local membersof the Goleta Valley Railroad Club 126 spent 17 years building their line 127 Today they test their engineson more than a mile of track 128 There is something nostalgicabout steam engines now 129 of course but the thing is a steam locomotive is live 130 The engine talks to you when you re running it 131 You can feel what it s doing 132 It tells you I m working too hardor I m taking it easy 133 You can hear it in the stack you can hear it in the sound of theblower the sound of the fire 134 They ve got steam engines thatare over a hundred years old 135 that continue to run 136 Once a year Johnson and the clubhost a three day meet 137 that attracts model ownersfrom all over the country 138 Each engine is custom built 139 representing thousands of hoursof meticulous machining 140 And as in real life the engineers discover 141 that steam engines can be cantankerousbeasts capable of fighting back 142 Well this is a 21 2 inch scale 143 narrow gauge locomotive builtto run on 71 2 inch track 144 We re trying to duplicate
