Transcript:Will E-Books Transform the Way We Read?A reading revolution, from libraries to elementary schools to college campuses, real books the kind you can hold in your hand are being replaced by e-books, downloadable to a handheld device. Is it a gimmick or could it transform the way we read and learn? Its not a rock concert or a food festival, but books that are drawing the crowds to the National Mall, the printed page - which still has the power to enthrall. Though at this bookmobile, theres not a printed page in sight. They can download digital media for free, and thats audio books, e-books, music and video. And its sponsored not by some high-tech company, but your public library. Surprised? Libraries are changing with the times, said Washington D.C.s chief librarian. While we used to be the place that held the books were now in some places the connection point. Many public libraries now make books available via their websites for free. All you need is a device to download them and a library card. No returns and no late fees. The titles actually automatically expire at the end of each lending period, So there is no worry for the expiration date or having to go back to the library to physically return the book. Overdrive, the company that manages more than 9,000 library Web sites, estimates 30 million people have visited the Web site of their local library in 2008, a 63 percent increase over 2007. Its gotten more people reading one way or another. And I think the e-book format really appeals to a lot of folks, I see them on Metro, I see them on airplanes, I love it. On some college campuses, e-books are replacing textbooks. This fall, six universities were selected to try the Kindle DX, As newest digital reader. I like to think what you hold in your hand tonight is the future. And how does the future feel for students at New Yorks Pace University? Some of my friends have come out of the bookstore paying $800 for a semester of books, so the books being so cheap on the Kindle its definitely well worth it. Its kind of confusing to learn how to navigate and stufff, Id rather, much rather, just you know open up a textbook and flip to the page. And going digital can be costly. The newest Kindle DX sells for just under $500.Transcript:(CBS) When old war pilots get together, somebody always calls it a gathering of eagles. Not today. This is a gathering of wasps. Thats WASP as in Womens Air Force Service Pilots, as is the first women to fly military aircraft.I flew the B-17, The Fortress Thats B-17, as was the plane that bombed Germany to its knees. Can you imagine? Wonderful. Dawn Seymour was one of 1,100 women who volunteered to fly during World War II. They never saw combat, but they flew just about every other kind of mission. I flew gunners on their training missions to learn how to fire the 50-caliber machine guns from a moving platform to a moving target, Seymour said. Now they are finally getting their moment in the sun. The ceremonys leading up to tomorrows presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal for stepping forward at a desperate time.By 1942, we were in a tough spot in the war. We needed all the personnel that we could get flying. Air crews were flying into the teeth of German defenses and going down almost as fast as they could be trained. So you bring women into the job, just as we brought Rosie the Riveter into work in the factories riveting the airplanes together, you bring women in to fly the planes so the men can go fly combat overseas. Rosie the Riveter became a national icon, while everyone forgot about the WASPs, except women like Lt. Col. Nicole Malachowski, who became the first female member of the Air Force Thunderbirds. When I made the decision to become an Air Force pilot, a lot of people told me thats not something you can do. But I was able to look to the story of the WASPs and realize that women can do it, The years have whittled them down to just a fragile few hundred, but talk to Dolores Lamb and you know she had the right staff. I loved to fly and I was 18 and I just couldnt stand not being able to fly a military airplane. But 38 of them were killed in crashes. Now we know who they were and what they did. I bowled a little on weekends, made a little extra money, but basically it was just recreation, Smallwood said. His dreams of bowling professionally were just that. A steady income as a Michigan autoworker seemed a much safer way to support his family. Make decent money, a pension, and great insurance - so yeah you think this is where Im going to retire from, Smallwood said. But just before Christmas one year ago, General Motors laid Tom off. He told his wife Jennifer, now home with their baby, that unless he got a new job in 6 months - he was going bowling. When we talked to her via Skype she said she was initially skeptical. A part of me was like no way we cant you know we cant do this right now, Jennifer said. But his fate would have it, nearby Detroit was hosting the next tournament to qualify for the pro tour. But making the tour wouldnt be easy, Tom would have to play 45 games and beat out 97 other bowlers. He did it, but even he couldnt imagine what would happen at his very first tournament. At the world championship, Tom racked up win after win and made it all the way to the final match, where he faced his biggest challenge yet: Wes
