department of education and skills, students will teach themselves in the schools of the future. this means that there will be no more problems such as finding enough teachers. estelle morris, the uk education secretary, opened the 2002 education technology conference in london recently. to start the conference, she presented a video showing a computergenerated model of the school of tomorrow. greater use of computer technology and classroom assistants will help students develop their own way of learning, morris said. she added that this is a more exciting as well as a more interesting way of learning. at the same time, teachers will be “freed from their traditional role as the source of all knowledge”. children of all abilities will “form the curriculum(课程)around their individual needs.” they will “learn in their own time, at their own speed and in their own environment”. at home or at school, they will follow their learning programmes by looking at online libraries and watching lessons by world-class teachers and subject experts. instead of going on field trips, students will use virtual reality. if they dont understand something, they can ask other students“take part in virtual communities with learners with similar needs”or e-mail their teachers. they will hand in their work electronically to be “auto-marked”. the classroom of the future is fast becoming a reality. and the department of education will soon produce a guide to help schools adapt buildings for new technology, morris said. these ideas are based on the uk governments plan to create an education system that provides students with a strong grounding of knowledge and skills at primary school level. and provides the chance for students to develop their individual skills at secondary school level.36. according to the uks department of education and skills, the school of the future will _.a. cause more problems such as being able to find enough teachersb. set no homework and no numerous contributions to their adopted land are much appreciated. however, it was once common in america to associate chinese americans with restaurants and laundries. people did not realize that the chinese had been driven into these occupations by the prejudice and discrimination.the first chinese to reach the usa came during the california gold rush of 1849. in that largely unoccupied land, the men staked a claim for themselves by placing markers in the ground. either because the chinese were so different from the others in speech and appearance, including a long pigtail at the back of their otherwise shaved heads, or because they worked so patiently that they succeeded in turning a seemingly worthless mining claim into a profitable one, they became the scapegoats of their envious competitors. they were harassed in many ways, and therefore started to seek out other ways of earning a living. some began to do the laundry for the white miners; others set up small restaurants. there being almost no women in california in those days, the chinese filled a real need by doing this womans work.in the early 1860s more chinese were imported as work crews to construct the first transcontinental railroad. they were needed because the work was so backbreaking and dangerous, and was carried out in such a remote part of the country that the railroad company couldnt find other laborers for the job. as in the case of their predecessors, these chinese were almost all males and encountered a great deal of prejudice and hostility. when times were hard, they were blamed for working for lower wages and taking jobs away from white men. anti-chinese riots broke out, and chinese were barred from using courts and from becoming american citizens. many chinese returned to their homeland, and their numbers declined sharply in the early 20th century. however, during ww ii, when china was an ally of the us, the chinese exclusion act, passed in 1882, was ended. in 1965, in a general revision of us immigration laws, many more chinese were permitted to settle.from the start, chinese had lived apart in chinatowns, where the residents organized unofficial governments to make community rules and to settle disputes. unable to find jobs on the outside, many went into business for themselves - primarily to serve their own neighborhood. to this day, certain chinatowns, especially those of san francisco and new york, are busy, thriving communities, which have become great attractions for tourists and those enjoying chinese food. chinese americans retain many aspects of their ancient cultures. children are imbued with the old values and attitudes, including respect for their elders and a feeling of responsibility to the family. this helps to explain why there is so little juvenile delinquency among them. the high regard for education, and the willingness to work hard for advancement are other noteworthy characteristics, which explains why so many descendants of uneducated laborers have succeeded in becoming doctors, lawyers and other professionals. 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(a、b、c、d)中,选出最佳选项。two basic ways to see growththere are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. people have generally viewed personal growth as an external result or product that can be identified and measured. the worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language - all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.by contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition, it is a journey and not the specific signposts and landmarks along the way. the process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution and courage, as they encounter new experiences and unexpected obstacles. in their process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to exp
