official language or is widely used in the united kingdom, ireland, australia, new zealand, india, united arab ernirates, canada, the united states, panama, surinam, south africa, nigeria, and kenya. english is the language that is most often studied as a foreign language in the european union (by 89% of schoolchildren), followed by french (32%), german (l8%), and spanish (8%). it is also the most studied in china, japan, and south korea. books, magazines, and newspapers are written in english in many countries around the world. english is also the widest used language in science. in 1997, the science citation index reported that 95% of its articles were written in english, but only half of their authors came from english-speaking countries.why has english become a world language? the british colonized (使殖民地) large parts of the world, spreading their language to new areas. the united kingdom and the united states are both important nations in the world. when doing business with these nations, knowing english is an advantage. as non-english-speaking countries realized that, industry and business hired people who spoke english, or required their workers to attend language courses. english is the international language of technology.with english being so widespread, it can make those who come from english-speaking countries already feel that they dont need to learn a foreign language. this is not good because one learns to understand a culture better if one knows the language, and one may also enjoy reading original books.56. the following are all the reasons for english to be widely used except that.a. the u.k. and the us were both developed countriesb. the british once colonized large parts of the worldc. english-speaking people worked in many countriesd. small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building.she trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “i would have liked to go back to it, but the shifts(工作班次) are all wrong for me, as i have to be home to get the children up and off to school.”so she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just 90, before tax and insurance. “its better than it was last year, but i still think that people who work unsocial hours should get a bit extra.”the hours she s chosen to work meant that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. however, she doesnt think that puts any pressure on their relationship.her work isnt physically very hard, but its not exactly pleasant, either. “i do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. if they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps theyd be a bit more careful.”the fact that shes working all night doesnt worry margaret at all. unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “since ive got to be here, i try to enjoy myselfand i usually do, because of the other girls. we all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.”another challenge margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “they think youre a cleaner because you dont know how to read and write,” said margaret. “i used to think what my parents would say if they knew what id been doing, but i dont think that way any more. i dont dislike the work though i cant say im mad about it.”59. margaret left her job as a nurse because _a. she wanted to earn more money to support her paragraph implies that margarets parents would _a. help care for her children b. regret what they had saidc. show sympathy (同情) for her d. feel disappointed in herit was on the afternoon of the day of christmas eve, and i was in mrs. protheros garden, waiting for cats, with her son jim. it was snowing. patient and cold, our hands wrapped in socks, we waited to snowball the cats. the wise cats never appeared. we were so still in the snows that we never heard mrs. protheros first cry from the bottom of the garden. or, if we heard it at all, it was, to us, like the cry of the neighbors polar cat. but soon the voice grew louder. “ fire!” cried mrs. prothero. and we ran down the garden, with the snowballs in our arms, towards the house; and smoke, indeed, was pouring out of the dining room. this was better than all the cats in wales standing on the wall in a row. we loaded with snowballs, stopped at the open door of the smoke-filled room. something was burning all right; perhaps it was mr. prothero, who always slept there after midday dinner with a newspaper over his face; but he was standing in the middle of the room, saying, “ a fine christmas!”there was no fire to be seen, only clouds of smoke and mr. prothero standing in the middle of them, waving his slipper as though he were conducting. “ do something,” he said. and we throw all our snowballs into the smoke-i think we missed mr. porthero-and ran out of the house. “ lets call the police,” jim said. “and ernie jenkins, he likes fires.” but we only called the fire-brigade, and soon the fire-engine came. mr. porthero gout out just in time before they turned the hose(水管)on. 63. why were the boys in mrs. protheros garden?they were about to start a snowball fight.they were waiting to see if there any fires this year.they were waiting to hear mrs. portheros first cry.they were waiting for the neighbours cats to appear.64. the underlined phrase “snowball the cats”( in paragraph1) means “_”.a. make cats out of snow b. bury cats under the snow c. thro snowballs at the cats d. play tricks on cats65. when the boys saw smoke pouring out of the dining room,_.a. they were joyful and excited b. they were frightened and worriedc. they were sorry for mrs. prothero d. they were anxious about mr. prothero66. what does the underlined sentence “ i think we missed mr. porthero” ( in para 6) mean?a. the boys failed to find mr. prothero because of the clouds of smoke. b. mr. prothero was suddenly missing in the smoky room.c. the boys always remembered mr. prothero. d. their snowballs did not hit mr. prothero. most people watching jeremy lin these past two months saw jeremy lin, new york knicks star; but i, watching him, saw someone else. that was my elder brother, bob, who is athletic and energetic. he could never sit still when he was in second grade; he had to get up every now and then and run around the room. and sure enough, he grew up to be a starting player for an n.c.a.a. championship lacrosse(长曲棍球)team. he was a nike-endorsed marathoner, too, and reached the top of mt. everest, unguided, in his 50s.and yet my family never watched his lacrosse games. we did watch some of his marathons, but that wasnt until he was in his 20s. when bob was in his glory days, our shanghainese-born parents were bent on getting him into medical school. there was a loving aspect to it: i can remember my father working through math books with him, lesson by lesson, at the big blackboard in the attic. bob never did become a doctor, though; and neither did i. it wasnt until my younger sister came along that someone in the family finally wore a white coat.bob today could be the fittest 58-year-old on the planet. his doctor estimates his biological age at 35; hes still climbing big mountains in the himalayas. and, like jeremy lin, hes charming. no one sees bob without leaving with a laugh. he sometimes jokes he could be mayor of his building, and its true. to know him is to cheer for him.and yet my parents did not cheer for him. what if my mother had sat on the sidelines with her statistics, like jeremy lins mother? what if my father had played videos of athletes for my brother to watch and imitate? its hard not to wonder.and how did jeremy lins parents manage to do these remarkable things? amy chua, the t
