Sometimes, against his will, his working cares would make him start out of his sleep; other times, he was taken up with his further reflection and consideration of his difficulties, so that his wife that lay with him could not choose but take notice that he was full of unusual trouble, and had in agitation some dangerous and perplexing question. Portia, being addicted to philosophy, a great lover of her husband, and full of an understanding courage, resolved not to inquire into Brutus secrets before she had made this trial of herself: she turned all her attendants out of her chamber and, taking a little knife such as they used to cut nails with, she gave herself a deep gash in the thigh; upon which followed a great flow of blood and, soon after, violent pains and a shivering fever occasioned by the wound. Now, when Brutus was extremely anxious and afflicted for her, she, in the height of all her pain, spoke thus to him: I, Portia, being the daughter of Cato, was given to you in marriage, not like a concubine, to partake only in the common intercourse of bed and board, but to bear a part in all your good and all your hidden grieves, nor be admitted to any of your counsels that require secrecy and trust I know very well that women seem to be of too weak a nature to be trusted with secrets; but certainly, Brutus, a virtuous birth and education, and the company of the good and honorable, are of some force to the forming of our manners; but I can boast that I am the daughter of Cato, and the wife of Brutus, in which two titles though before I put less confidence, yet now I have tried myself, and find that I can bid defiance to pain. Which words having spoken, Portia showed Brutus her wound, and related to him the trial that she had made of her constancy; at which he,being astonished, lifted up his hands to heaven, and begged the assistance of the gods in his enterprise, that he might show himself a husband worthy of such a wife as Portia.39.From the account given in this passage, Brutus sleep was disturbed because he was _.A afflicted with a physical illnessB plotting to slay CaesarC troubled by insomniaD concerned with problems associated with his work40.Portia believed that if Brutus would not confide in her, she could not _.A give evidence of her love for himB partake of his bed and boardC give him philosophical adviceD understand the great problems confronting the state41.Portias remarks indicate that women in her day were considered _.A to be equal to the men as compared to menB to be less trustworthy as compared to menC to be superior as compared to menD physically weaker as compared to men42.According to the passage, the reason Brutus did not confide in his wife is that he _.A considered her incapable of understandingB felt she lacked courageC wanted her to partake only of the good in their marriageD no reason is given43.When Portia shows Brutus her wound, she is saying to him in effect that. _A Unless you confide in me, I will commit suicideB If this does not move you to trust me, I am not worthy to be your wife.C Can anything you tell me cause me more pain than that which I have inflicted upon myself?D Accept this as a Symbol of my regard for you.题44-48Passage 2Concern with money, and then more money, in order to buy the conveniences and luxuries of modern life, has brought great changes to the lives of most Frenchmen. More people are working than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops, and factories are discovering the greater efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunchrooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus, the typical Frenchman produces more, earns more, and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart of only a generation ago, He gains in greater comforts and ease of life, What he loses to some extent is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality. Some day that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of the technological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that assembly-line life will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely (but less productive) old French style. What will happen, they ask, to taste, elegance, and the cultivation of the good things in life-to joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple, a stroll by the river, or just happy hours of conversation in a local care? Since the late 1950s life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit of material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the triumph of this competitive, goods-oriented culture. Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of the critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modern economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old.44.Which of the following is related to the old French way of life?_A Short lunch hour.B Greater output.C Greater comforts.D Leisurely cafe talk.45.Which of the following is NOT true about the Frenchmen?_A Many of them prefer the modern life style.B They actually enjoy working at the assembly line.C They are more concerned with money than before.D They are more competitive than the older generation.46.The passage suggests that _.A in pursuing material gains the French are suffering losses elsewhereB its now unlikely to see a Frenchman enjoying a stroll by the riverC the French are fed up with the old French styleD few changes have occurred in the life style of all Frenchmen47.We can infer that the strongest critics came from _.A young people who are worried about the futureB people of different social strata in addition to university studentsC university students who have occasionally resorted to violent means against trendD young people who are concerned solely with the present and not the future48.Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?_A Changes in the French way of life.B Criticism of the new life style.C The Americanization of France.D Features of the new way of life.完形填空Directions:In this section, you will read a passage with some blanks.
