Alex Honnold grew up in California around a climbing culture and started climbing at 10. He would go to a climbing gym six days a week for three hours a day. Honnold was a straight-A student in school. But climbing was his main interest, and free soloing quickly became his favorite style. Since those early days, the 27-year-old has made over a thousand climbs. He is considered by many to be the best climber in the world. Experienced climber John Long says over half of the well-known free solo climbers are dead. According to him, Honnolds greatest achievement is that hes still alive! Honnold climbs by fitting his fingers into the cracks of the rock face. With most of his weight supported by his fingers alone, he pulls himself up. However, his ability to stay focused is as important as his strength. Other climbers agree that the fear of climbing without a rope is a huge challenge to overcome. Everyone knows that a single mistake would probably be a deadly one. Honnolds great achievements have made him famous, but along with praise comes lots of criticism. Many accuse him of taking too many risks. Honnold responds by saying, “I dont think Ill do this forever. But I dont think Ill stop because of the risk. The continent had been torn apart twice by wars during the first half of the 20th century. Everyone agreed that this kind of destruction must never happen again. But how could it be prevented?French foreign minister Robert Shuman thought that economic ties could unite the nations of Europe together. The longstanding competition between France and Germany would have to end if the countries well-being depended on each other. So in 1950, he proposed the formation of a European Coal and Steel Community. The community consisted of six nations: France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. They agreed to pool their production of coal and steel in order to improve their peoples standard of living, and more importantly, prevent future wars. Then in 1958, the same nations set up the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community. These three communities were merged and became known as the European communities or EC. Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom joined the EEC in 1973. The EC became part of the European Union, or EU, when the Treaty on European Union was signed in Maastricht in the Netherlands in 1992. The treaty permitted citizens of EU countries to travel between countries in the union freely and created a common foreign and security policy. It also set up rules and a timeline for a single currency(货币) that would be used throughout Europe.Europes new single currency, the euro(欧元), was adopted in 1999. Denmark, Sweden and the UK chose not to join the monetary union. At first, Greece did not meet the financial requirements for joining the euro system, but it fulfilled them and adopted the euro two years later. As the EU looks forward, it will need to find a way to face new challenges of the 21st century.12. What did Robert Shuman suggest to unite the European nations?A.
