What is the significance of studying English literature? Many students wonder why they should study literature. They argue that literature is practically useless. English study mainly includes two aspects: linguistics and literature. So literature is very important for our English study. But as a English major student, we should focus on the English literature than language study. I think study English literature not only its very important for us , but also it have five aspects significance. First, the English literature can expand our cultural horizons and broaden our range of general knowledge .for example, when we read the great works, we can get some information that we havent got .for instance, when I read I know the information about the Christianity that I havent touch, so when I read the work, I know that different religions have different faith and rule. And I know the social background ,living style . it very different between china and other country. So the literature can expand our range of general knowledge. Second, the literature can refine our taste and character. The literature can change our mind. Before we have access the literature works, our soul is desert. We are ordinary people. We havent different between other people. We stand same level. If we study literature, we will feel proud. Because when we say a word it not only the surface means , but also include a deep means. Your words have high quality. You stand a high level. Third , the literature contains the distillation of the life experience and mature views of the people who came before us .i will never forget the words that the Shakespeares said all the worlds a stage, and all the men and the men and woman merely players. This word tell me I am important role in my word , we must make good use of the stage , play a very famous play. We can change ourselves. Our stage will become very colorful. This world has big influence on my study, daily life. Another important reason to study literature is that it helps to develop critical thinking skills. To be able to think critically and to pay close attention to details is an important skill. This skill can be applied to any subject area, especially as students get older and their studies become increasingly difficult. Reading different works of literature also is good for expanding a student understanding of different points of view. By reading a work of literature, a minority student is better able to comprehend that groups plight. This is much better way for students to realize different points of view of different people. So the literature can deepen our understanding of human, and quicken our mind. There are the significances of studying English literature. Reading literature is a jour
