Cup of coffee? No, its the third most addictive thing in modern life, the cell phoneAnd experts say it is becoming more difficult for many people to curb their longing to hug it more tightly than most of their personal relationshipsWith its shiny surface, its smooth and satisfying touch, its air of complexity, the cell phone connects us to the world even as it disconnects us from people three feet awayIn just the past couple of years, the cell phone has challenged individuals, employers, phone makers and counselors (顾问) in ways its inventors in the late 1940s never imaginedThe costs are becoming even more evident, and I dont mean just the monthly billDrChris Knippers, a counselor at the Betty Ford Center in Southern California, reports that the overuse of cell phones has become a social problem not much different from other harmful addictions: a barrier to one-on-one personal contact, and an escape from realitySounds extreme, but weve all witnessed the evidence: The person at a restaurant who talks on the phone through an entire meal, ignoring his kids around the table; the woman who talks on the phone in the car, ignoring her husband; the teen who texts messages all the way home from school, avoiding contact with kids all around himIs it just rude, or is it a kind of unhealthiness? And pardon me, but how is this improving the quality of life?Jim Williams, an industrial sociologist based in Massachusetts, notes that cell-phone addiction is part of a set of symptoms in a widening gulf of personal separationHe points to a study by Duke University researchers that found one-quarter of Americans say they have no one to discuss their most important personal business withDespite the growing use of phones, e-mail and instant messaging, in other words, Williams says studies show that we dont have as many friends as our parentsJust as more information has led to less wisdom, more acquaintances via the Internet and cell phones have produced fewer friends, he saysIf the cell phone has truly had these effects, its because it has become very widespreadConsider that in 1987, there were only 1 million cell phones in useToday, something like 300 million Americans carry themThey far outnumber wired phones in the United States60. Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading become popular. One should be careful, however, of supposing that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud is distraction to others. Examination of reasons connected with the historical development of silent reading shows that it became the usual mode of reading for most adult reading tasks mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character. The last century saw a gradual increase in literacy (读写能力) and thus in the number of readers. As readers increased, so the number of listeners dropped, and thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the popularity of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, trains and offices, where reading aloud would disturb other readers in a way.Towards the end of the century there was still heated argument over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully, and over whether the reading of material such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed this argument remains with us still in education. However, whatever its ad vantages, the old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and magazines for a specialized readership on the other.By the end of the century students were being advised to have some new ideas of books and to use skills in reading them which were not proper, if not impossible, for the oral reader. The social, cultural, and technological developments in the century had greatly changed what the term reading referred to.63.Why was reading aloud common before the nineteenth century?A. Because silent reading had not been discovered.B. Because there were few places for private reading.C. Because few people could read for themselves.D. Because people depended on reading for enjoyment.64 The development of silent reading during the nineteenth century showed _ .A. a change in the position of literate people B. a change in the nature of readingC. an increase in the number of books D. an increase in the average age of readers65 Educationalists are still arguing about _ .A. the importance of silent readingB. the amount of information provided by books and newspapersC. the effects of reading on healthD. the value of different types of reading material66. What is the writer of this passage attempting to do? _.A. To explain how present day reading habits developed.B. To change people s way to read.C. To show how reading methods have improved.D. To encourage the growth of reading. DYou never see him, but theyre with you every time you fly. They record where you are going, how fast youre traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to withstand(反抗、抵挡) almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book. Theyre known as the black box. When planes fall from the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to Comoros Islands in the India ocean June 30, 2009, the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong. So when a French submarine (潜水艇) detected the devices homing signal five days later, the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed. In 1958, Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction. That was the first mode for a black box, which became a requirement on all U.S. commercial flights by 1960. Early models often failed to withstand crashes, however, so in 1965 the device was completely redesigned and moved to the rear of the plane the area least subject to impact from its original position in the landing wells (起落架舱). The same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility. Modern airplanes have two black boxes: a voice recorder, which tracks pilots conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircrafts final moments. Placed in an isolated (隔绝的) case and surrounded by a quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel, the boxes can withstand massive force and temperatures up to 2,000. When submerged, theyre also able to emit signals from depths of 20,000 ft. Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447, which crashed near Brazil on June 1, 2009, are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say theyre still likely to turn up. I
