Let me tell you about Tyler.Tyler was born 4 with HIV. From the 5 beginning of his life, he was 6 on medications to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a 7 surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he 8 in a small backpack on his back. Medications were hooked up to this pump and were 9 supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his 10 .Tyler wasnt willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this 11 disease. It was not 12 to find him playing and racing around his backyard. Tylers mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast she needed to dress him in 13 . Over the past couple months, most of the political headlines youve read have probably been about the government shutdown and the launch of the Affordable Care Act. And I know that many of you have rightly never been more frustrated with Washington. But if you look beyond those headlines, there are some good things happening in our economy. And thats been my top priority since the day I walked into the Oval Office. After decades in which the middle class was working harder and harder just to keep up, and a punishing recession that made it worse, we made the tough choices required not just to recover from crisis, but to rebuild on a new foundation for stronger, more durable economic growth.Five years later, we have fought our way back. Our businesses have created 7.8 million new jobs in the past 44 months. Another 200,000 Americans went back to work last month. The American auto industry has come roaring back with more than 350,000 new jobs jobs churning out and selling the high-tech, fuel-efficient cars the world wants to buy. And theyre leading the charge in a manufacturing sector that has added jobs for the first time since the 1990s a big reason why our businesses sell more goods and services “Made in America” than ever before. We decided to reverse our addiction to foreign oil. And today, we generate more renewable energy than ever, more natural gas than anybody, and for the first time in nearly 20 years, America now produces more oil than we buy from other countries. We decided to fix a broken health care system. And even though the rollout of the marketplace where you can buy affordable plans has been rough, so far, about 500,000 Americans are poised to gain health coverage starting January 1st. And by the way, health care costs are growing at the slowest rate in 50 years. And one more thing: since I took office, weve cut our deficits by more than half. And that makes it easier to invest in the things that create jobs education, research, and infrastructure.Imagine how much farther along we could be if both parties were working together. Think about what we could do if a reckless few didnt hold the economy hostage every few months, or waste time on dozens of votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act rather than try to help us fix it.In the weeks ahead, Ill keep talking about my plan to build a better bargain for the middle class. Good jobs. A good education. A chance to buy a home, save, and retire. And yes, the financial security of affordable health care. And Ill look for any willing partners who want to help.来源:Zxxk.ComBecause of your hard work and tough sacrifices over the past five years, were pointed in the right direction. But weve got more work to do to keep moving that way. And as long as Im President, Ill keep doing everything I can to create jobs, grow the economy, and make sure that everyone who works hard has a chance to get ahead. Thanks, and have a great weekend.21.Which of the following is not the reason for peoples frustration with the government?A. The government shut down B. Unemployment rateC. The addiction to foreign oil D. The launch of the Affordable Care Act22. Whats the meaning of the underlined word “repeal”?A. To abolish B. To protect C. To strengthen D. To weaken23. According to the speech, which of the following can be implied?A. American people have every reason to feel frustrated with the government.B. Health care costs are growing at the slowest rate in 50 years.C. The president feels sorry that the economy is not moving in the right direction.D. Some government officials dont agree with the president on the medical care system. As is known, it is always the case in some of the scariest science fiction. This four-legged robot can teach itself to walk, even changing how it walks after it has suffered damage. Now, science fiction has changed into science fact. For the first time, researchers have created a robotic machine that can stand a beating and keep on walking. Developed by scientists from Cornell University and the University of Vermont, the new robot looks like a spider with four legs. Until now, even the most advanced robot was almost certain to break down when damaged. Thats because its inside computer simply doesnt know how to operate the machine after its shape has changed. To get around this problem, the spidery robots developers equipped their invention with eight motors and two sensors that read how the machine is tilting(倾斜). The motors and sensors all provide electrical signals to the machines software. Using this information, the system follows a new procedure to figure out the machines shape at any given moment. The program chooses from among 100,000 possible arrangements of parts. From there, the computer considers a wide variety of possible next steps, and it calculates how best to move the robot forward the longest possible distance, before trying to move again. “The new strategy is a major advance in robotics”, Professor Skehan, a scientist in Cornell University says, “and its far from scary”. The technology may someday help researchers create better artificial arms and legs that give new freedom to people who lack them. The new knowledge might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space. “Designing robots that can adapt to changing environments and can compensate(补偿) for damage has been a difficult problem,” says neuroscientist Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in Bloomington. “This work provides a new way toward solving this important problem.” 24. Whats the most important characteristic of the new robot? A. Its shape is like a spider with four legs. B. It can repair itself and move again after damaged. C. It is operated by its inside computer. D. It is certain to change the direction when damaged.25. We can infer from the view of Professor Skehan that _. A. the new technology will help people have a better sense of space B. the new technology will help people grow new arms and legs C. designing robots can help to be adaptable to the changing of the environment D. the new technology will have some medical benefits26. The purpose of the author to write this article is to _. A. introduce a new robot that will not die B. discuss science fiction and new invention C. recommend the latest invention D. explain the relationship between robot and medicine C 体裁分类:议论文 难度系数:It is well-known that twins are closer to each other than most brothers and sisters - after all, they probably spend more time with each other. Parents of twins often notice that they develop special ways of communicating: they invent their own words and one can often finish the others sentence. In exceptional circumstances, this closeness becomes more extreme: they invent a whole language of their own, as in the case of Grace and Virginia Kennedy from Georgia in the USA, who communicated so successfully in their own special language that they did not speak any English at all until after they started school. However, these special relationships are the result of lives spent almost entirely in each others company. What happens when twins do not grow up together, when they are separated at birth for some reason? Are they just like any other strangers, or are there still special similarities between them? Professor Tom Bouchard, of the University of Minnesota, set out to find the answer to this question. He traced sixteen pairs of twins, who were adopted by different families when they were babies, and often brought up in very different circumstances. Each twin was then interviewed about every small detail of their life. The results of this research make a surprising reading. Many of the twins were found to have the same hobbies, many have suffered the same illnesses, and some have even had the same type of accident at the same point in their lives. One pair of middle-aged women arrived for their first meeting in similar dresses, another pair were wearing similar jewellery. The most incredible similarities are to be found in the case of Jim Springer and Jim Lewis from Ohio in the USA. The story of the Jim Twins made headline news across USA. Born to an immigrant woman in 1939, and adopted by different families at birth, both babies were named Jim by their new parents. But what can be the explanation for these remarkable similarities? Is it all pure coincidence, or is the explanation in some way genetic? Research into the lives of twins is forcing some experts to admit that our personalities may be at least partly due to nature. On the other hand, analysts are also anxious to emphasise that incredible coincidences do happen all the time, not just in the lives of twins.27. The case of Grace and Virginia Kennedy (Para. 1) is to show that _.A. twins communicate with each other in an unusual way B. twins are more likely to suffer from speaking problemsC. most twins have exceptional abilities to invent a new languageD. twins wont have an effective communication until they go to school28. The purpose of Tom Bouchards study is to find _.A. what will happen if twins spend lives entirely in the same company B. why the 16 pairs of twins have been adopted by different familiesC. whether separated growing up has effect on twins special similaritiesD. when the special similarities come into being during their growing up29. What can be learned from the last paragraph?A. Incredible coincidences happen to twins all the time.B. Nature is the only way to explain the similarities between twins.C. The differences between twins are to some extent the results of genes.D. Similarities shows the close relationship between two strange persons. D 体裁分类:记叙文难度系数: I was puzzled! Why was this old woman making such a fuss about an old copse which was of no use to anybody? She had written letters to the local paper, even to a national, protesting about a projected by-pass to her village, and, looking at a map, the route was nowhere near where she lived and it wasnt as if the area was attractive. I was more than puzzled, I was curious. The enquiry into the route of the new by-pass to the village was due to take place shortly, and I wanted to know what it was that motivated her. So it was that I found myself knocking on a cottage door, being received by Mary Smith and then being taken for a walk to the woods. “Ive always loved this place,” she said, “it has a lot of memories for me, and for others. We all used it. They called it Lovers lane. Its not much of a lane, and it doesnt go anywhere important, but thats why we all came here. To be away from people, to be by ourselves. ” she added. It was indeed pleasant that day and the songs of many birds could be heard. Squirrels watched from the branches, quite bold in their movements, obviously few people passed this way and they had nothing to fear. I could imagine the noise of vehicles passing through these peaceful woods when the by-pass was built, so I felt that she probably had something there but as I hold strong opinions about the needs of the community over-riding the opinions of private individuals, I said nothing. The village was quite a dangerous place because of the traffic especially for old people and children, their safety was more important to me than an old womans strange ideas. “Take this tree,” she said pausing after a short while. “To you it is just that, a tree. Not unlike many others here.” She gently touched the bark, “Look here, under this branch, what can you see?” “It looks as if someone has done a bit of carving with a knife.” I said after a cursory inspection. “Yes, thats what it is!” she said softly. She went on, “He had a penknife with a spike for getting stones from a horses hoof, and I helped him to carve them. We were very much in love, but he was going away, and could not tell me what he was involved in the army. I had guessed of course. It was the last evening we ever spent together, because he went away the next day, back to his Unit.” Mary Smith was quiet for a while, then she sobbed. “His mother showed me the telegram. Sergeant R Holmes Killed in action in the invasion of France.”“I had hoped that you and Robin would one day get married.” she said, “He was my only child, and I would have loved to be a Granny, they would have been such lovely babies- she was like that! ”“Two years later she too was dead. Pneumonia (肺炎), following a chill on the chest was what the doctor said, but I think it was an old fashioned broken heart. A child would have helped both of us.” There was a further pause. Mary Smith gently caressed the wounded tree, just as she would have caressed him. “And now they want to take our tree away from me.” Another quiet sob, then she turned to me. “I was young and pretty then, I could have had anybody, I wasnt always the old woman you see here now. I had everything I wanted in life, a lovely man, health and a future to look forward to.” She paused again and looked around. The breeze gently moved through the leaves with a sighing sound. “There were others, of course, but no one can match my Robin!” she said strongly. “And no
