Actually, it was the garden I visited. The woman living in the house was a bit of a recluse(隐居者), but she told the gardeners to let us children enter the garden, so long as we left her in peace. She said a love of plants might help us to learn something about growing things. It didnt work in my caseI was just interested in running on the grass and climbing the trees growing round the house. I thought the house owner was a fantastic millionaire: she kept horses in the field next to the house; she was a famous artistsomeone had seen sketch books lying around. But one day I was in the garden, up a tree as usual, and a group of people walked with one of the gardeners, saying theyd come to England to see some world-famous gardens, and this was their favourite. I couldnt believe my ears. The gardener said that the owner and her late husband had created the garden almost from nothing. The house itself was a no-go area. Looking inside from the top of a tall tree, I could see signs that the whole house was lived in, but the rooms looked like something from the 19th century, with heavy, ugly furniture. Despite electricity and modern heating, the place looked uncared-for. The garden, however, was always perfect, and must have swallowed most of her income. When I revisited the garden and the house many years later, it had been transformed into a holiday retreat for millionaires and film stars. The garden was preserved as a horticultural (园艺的)treasure, but what had been enjoyed by children before was now to be appreciated only by the super-rich. From outside the house everything looked much the same. Inside, however, the rooms were elegantly decorated and security cameras winked from every corner. With my low salary, perhaps I shouldnt be there at all. 36. The author enjoyed visiting the garden simply because he could _. A. know more about the womanB. learn to grow plantsC. play freely in the gardenD. find a peaceful place37. From the second paragraph we may conclude that _. A. the house owner was a millionaireB. the house was designed by a successful artistC. the garden was internationally famous D. the garden owners husband was still living38. When the author looked from the top of the tree, he found the inside part of the house was _. A. luxuriously decoratedB. old-fashionedC. modernly-furnishedD. well-maintained 39. What did the author think of his revisit to the garden and the house many years later? A. pleasantB. satisfyingC. encouraging D. regretful BToo far to walk, too close to drive? Its time to throw away the bicycle, car keys and never-ending search for parking spots and make the most of these three high-tech electric people movers. Lets start with the ZBoard a weight-sensing electric skateboard. This isnt the first attempt at putting a battery-powered motor on a skateboard, but modern, lightweight battery technology has allowed the ZBoard to hit 17 mph on a charge that lasts 5 hours and will take you 10 miles. Pressure-sensitive footpads sense directional lean to power you forward or to apply the brakes. With the ZBoard, you dont have to be a skateboarding superstar to ride. Simply jump on, lean and go! Next upspnKiX. It is small enough to throw into a backpack, and at 10 mph, fast enough to get you to your destination in a timely fashion. No question, theres a coolness factor at work here, but it takes practice to master the balance required to move mere inches off the ground. And the wheels and battery pack are heavy so heavy that you may soon be longing for the low-tech simplicity of walking. If you like a challenge, the Solowheel might be more your style. Part motorized scooter, part unicycle, and all fun. Lean forward to go. Back to stop. Simple. The hard part is mastering the balance required to zip around town at 10 mph for 1520 miles or so on a single charge. But practice makes perfect. It requires just enough skill and ability to keep you paying attentionand having fun. Gas isnt cheap. Hopefully with todays technology and these three new people movers, youll be hitting those places too far to walk and too close to drive in no time. 40. The purpose of the passage is _. A. to introduce three high-tech electric people moversB. to show how creative people are in developing new thingsC. to give new ways to reduce traffic pressure in cities D. to suggest how crazy people are about high-tech products41. People operate ZBoard with the help of pressure sensor. D. Necessary training is needed before using ZBoard. 43. What improvement is needed to make spnKiX more popular? A. It has to be made smaller in size. B. Its appearance should be cooler. C. It should be made lighter. D. Its speed should be increased. CLaws to stop tigers, camels, zebras and snakes being used as performing animals in circuses have been announced by the government. The environment minister, Jim Paice, hoped the laws would be brought in before the end of the parliament in 2015, which is the main law-making institution of the UK. At present between 35 and 50 wild animals are thought to be used by circuses in England and Defra offered to help find new homes for the retired performers. The announcement follows a campaign by animal charity organization for the ban (禁令), which became worse when a video appeared last year of a circus elephant beaten by a worker. Campaigners were angry when Paice previously announced tougher licensing instead. Circus Mondao, whose website shows zebra and camels, said it would probably challenge the suggested ban. The circus is a member of the European Circus Association, which previously challenged Austrias ban, saying there was no scientific evidence (证据) that the animals were harmed by the travelling or conditions. On its website, Mondao says that when it travels animals are the last to be loaded and the first to be unloaded; they are moved to tents within an hour of arriving, and are usually moved 2050 miles.Animal charities welcomed the move, but called for ministers to speed up the laws. Asked why circuses would be banned from keeping wild animals but not domestic animals such as horses, a Defra spokesman said a key difference was that domesticated animals were more used to conditions such as travelling. “Wild animals arent domesticated: we feel its not right ethically (伦理上) for wild animals to perform, ” he said. 44. A. animals that provide meat for peopleB. animals that are introduced from other countriesC. animals that are well trained by a circusD. animals that live on farm or in peoples homeDFishy Film Goes DeeperAvatar director James Cameron is now taking his camera deep into the ocean. On March 25, he did a lone submarine (潜水艇) dive nearly 11 kilometers down to the deepest place in the ocean, the Mariana Trench (马里亚纳海沟) in the western Pacific. Compared with the colorful forest of Avatar, the Mariana Trench is dark and icy cold. Cameron became the first person to explore the deepest valley in the ocean since two men made a 20-minute trip there in 1960. “I felt like I really had gone to another planet and come back, ” Cameron told the Associated Press after returning from his dive. “Its really the sense of isolation (与世隔绝), realizing how tiny you are down in this big, black and unexplored place. ”The filmmaker has spent the past few years working with his team of engineers to design and build the submarine called Deep-sea Challenger. Unlike ordinary submarines, it is wrapped in cameras and lights so that Cameron can film the ocean from the inside. The minute-long video that Cameron took while under the sea has been released by the National Geographic. There are no words in the video, but there is something fascinating about this extremely quiet and remote place. Cameron said he was thankful that he of all people had had the chance to go there. “There had to be a moment where I just stopped, and took it in, and said, this is where I am; Im at the bottom of the ocean, the deepest place on Earth. What does that mean? ” Cameron told reporters. The Mariana Trench was once thought to be of little interest to scientists. It was assumed that nothing could live under so much pressure and with so little light. But in recent years scientists have found creatures there like fish and shrimps that can resist the heavy pressure. They are also trying to figure out what role deep-sea trenches play in earthquakes. Cameron told the BBC that he does not want this dive to be a one-time thing. He wants to use it as a platform for further ocean exploration. 47. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To inform readers of Camerons adventure to the Mariana Trench. B. To report on the successful launch of the “Deep-sea Challenger”. C. To introduce Camerons latest video filmed in the Mariana Trench. D. To draw public attention to the Mariana Trench. 48. It can be inferred from the passage that when Cameron reached the Mariana Trench, _. A. he felt worried and isolatedB. he was anxious about his safetyC. he was surprised by what he experiencedD. he was excited that he had occupied the ocean49. How does the “Deep-sea Challenger” differ from ordinary submarines? A. It is more comfortable than an ordinary submarine. B. It is much heavier than an ordinary submarine. C. It is specially designed for filming under the sea. D. It is the only one allowing people to see the outside. 50. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The role that deep-sea trenches play in earthquakes is still unknown. B. Cameron is the first person to have explored the Mariana Trench so far. C. Scientists dont think that the Mariana Trench is of much scientific value. D. There are no creatures living in the Mariana Trench due to its special conditions. 第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)A study showed that eating even a little less salt could greatly help the heart. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The scientists used a computer model to predict how just three grams less salt a day would affect heart disease in the United States. The scientists said the results would be thirteen percent fewer heart attacks, eight percent fewer strokes(中风), four percent fewer deaths and eleven percent fewer new cases of heart disease. 51 Researchers said it could prevent one hundred thousand heart attacks and ninety-two thousand deaths every year. The researchers were from the University of California, San Francisco, Stanford University and Columbia University. They and public health professionals in the United States are interested in a national campaign to persuade people to eat less salt. 52 However, some scientists say such a campaign is an experiment with the health of millions of people. Michael Alderman is among the critics(批评家). He is a high blood pressure expert and professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Doctor Alderman says that eating less salt results in lower blood pressure. 53 And he
