The servants were up very late on the Saturday evening, getting everything ready for the next day, and while they were busy they saw the glow of a fire start in the sky. By 3 oclock on the Sunday morning, the glow had become so bright that one of the servants, Jane, woke her master to see it. Pepys went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, so after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy (整理) his room and put his things back where he wanted them after the servants had cleaned everything. While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard that the fire was a bad one: three hundred houses had been burned down in the night and the fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower of London and climbed up on a high part of the building so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. Someone told him that the fire had started in a bakers house in Pudding Lane, and then the flames had quickly spread to the other houses in the narrow lane. So began the Great Fire of London, a fire that lasted nearly five days, destroyed most of the old city and ended, so it is said, at Pie Corner. 11.The servants were up very late because _.A) they were chattingB) they were having a partyC) they were preparing for a dinnerD) they were watching a fire12.Pepys went back to bed because _.A) he was not interested in chatting about a fireB) he did not think the fire was anything specialC) the fire was far away D) the fire had died down13.When Pepys was tidying his room and things, Jane came in and told him that _.A) the fire was dying downB) the fire had been put outC) the fire was a bad oneD) no flame could be seen14.The fire started _.A) on London Bridge B) in a bakers houseC) because the lane was too narrow to allow people to come to helpD) because people could not get enough water to put it out15.Pie Corner was _.A) the site of the Tower of LondonB) the site of the Great Fire of LondonC) the place where the fire endedD) the place where Pepys livedOurs is a big world, complex and full of many diverse people. People with many varying points of view are constantly running up against others who have differing opinions. Those of us who smoke are just one group of many. Recently, the activism of non-smokers has reminded us of the need to be considerate of others when we smoke in public. But, please! Enough is enough! We should like to remind non-smokers that courtesy is a two-way street. If you politely request that someone not smoke you are more likely to receive a cooperative response than if you scowl fiercely and hurl insults. If you speak directly to someone, you are more likely to get what you want than if you com- plain to the management. Many of us have been smoking for so long that we sometimes for- get that others are not used to the aroma of burning tobacco. We re human, and like everyone else we occasionally offend unknowingly. But most of us are open to friendly suggestions and comments, and quite willing to modify our behaviour to accommodate others. Smokers are people, too. We laugh and cry. We have hopes, dreams, aspirations. We have children, and mothers, and pets. We eat our hamburgers with everything on them and salute the flag at Fourth of July picnics. We hope youll remember that the next time a smoker light up in public. 16.The purpose of the first paragraph is _.A) to inform the reader of the complexity of the worldB) to declare that the author belongs to the group of smokersC) to tell non-smokers that smokers will be considerateD) to reveal the authors reason for writing this essay17.What does the second sentence in the second paragraph imply?A) We should go on two different roads. B) We have different ways of doing things.C) Being polite to each other is a mutual thing.D) We can smoke and sometimes we will not smoke.18.According to the author, how can you get cooperative response from smokers if you dont feel like someone smoking beside you?A) Complain to his superior.B) Tell him directly that you hate smokers.C) Refrain from complaining but try to hint him next time.D) Tell him politely that you are not used to smoke.19.According to the author, why do some smokers smoke in public?A) Because they cannot resist smoking.B) Because they forget that others do not like the smell cigarettes.C) Because they are humans and they cannot avoid offending people.D) Because there is no law against it.20.How does the author try to persuade the reader?A) He uses reasons.B) He appeals to peoples emotions.C) He cites examples in his argument.D) He simply states his opinion. Culture shock might be called an occupational disease of people who have been suddenly transplanted abroad. Like most ailments, it has its own symptoms and cure. Culture shock is precipitated by the anxiety that results from losing all our familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse. Those signs or cues include the thousand and one ways in which we orient ourselves to the situation of daily life: when to shake hands and what to say when we meet people, when and how to give tips, how to make purchases, when to accept and when to refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These cues, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, customs, or norms, are acquired by all of us in the course of growing up and are as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept. All of us depend for our peace of mind and our efficiency on hundreds of these cues, most of which we do not carry on the level of conscious awareness. Now when an individual enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar cues are removed. He or she is like a fish out of water. No matter how broad-minded or full of goodwill you may be, a series of props have been knocked from under you followed by a feeling of frustration and anxiety. People react to the frustration in much the same way. First they reject the environment which causes the discomfort. “The ways of the host country are bad because they make me feel bad.” When foreigners in a strange land get together to grouse about the host country and its people, you can be sure they are suffering from culture shock. Another phase of culture shock is regression. The home environment suddenly assumes a tremendous importance. To the foreigner everything becomes irrationally glorified. All the difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered. It usually takes trip home to bring one back to reality. 21.According to the passage, culture shock _.A) is an occupational disease of foreign peopleB) may lead to very serious symptomsC) is actually not a diseaseD) is incurable22.According to the passage, culture shock results from _.A) the sudden change of the social atmosphere and customsB) the sudden change of our daily habitsC) the sudden loss of our own signs and symbolsD) the discomfort that we feel when faced with a foreigner23.Which one of the following may not be the symptoms of culture shock?A) You dont know how to express your gratitude.B) You dont know how to greet other people.C) You suddenly forget what a word means.D) You dont understand why a foreigner shrugs.24.How would a person who stays abroad most probably react when he or she is frustrated by the culture shock according to the passage?A) He is most likely to refuse to absorb the strange environment at first.B) He is ready to accept the change and adapt himself to the new environment.C) He or she is most likely to take a trip home when frustrated by the strange environment.D) He or she may begin to hate the people or things around him or her.25.This passage is most likely taken from _.A) a news reportB) a grammar bookC) a book on medicine and psychologyD) an essay on human customs Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a step back from the closeness of human interaction. With e-mail and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine. As almost every imaginable contact between human beings becomes automatic by machine, the alienation quotient goes up. You cant even call a person to get the phone number of another person anywhere. Directory assistance is almost always fully automatic by machine. Pumping gas at the station? Why say good-morning to the worker when you can swipe (刷卡) your credit card at the pump and save yourself the bother of human contact? Placing money at the bank? Why talk to a clerk who might live in the neighborhood when you can just put your credit card into the ATM? Pretty soon you wont have the hard task of making eye contact at the grocery store. Some grocery chains are using a self-scanner so you can check yourself out, avoiding those annoying clerks who look at you and ask how you are doing. 26.The writers attitude towards advances in communications technology may be described as _.A) criticalB) unconcernedC) positiveD) uninterested27.If his mom has a question, he _.A) will find ways to reach her B) will locate her e-mail addressC) will try to get her a voice machineD) will leave her the answer through voice mail28.Judging from the context, the word “alienation” in line 2, paragraph 2 means _.A) relationshipB) closenessC) strangenessD) stress29.With the rapid development of high technology, people dont need to _.A) see or talk to one anotherB) say good morning to workersC) make eye contact with clerksD) completely rely on manpower30.It can be inferred that the writer _.A) is pleased with the modern pace of life B) feels more separated from othersC) doesnt want anyone to bother him D) sings the praises of communications technologyPart III Vocabulary and Structure Directions: Choose the best one to complete each sentence.(0.5 X 30 = 15 points) 31.In copying this paper, be careful not to leave _ any words.A) outB) aloneC) offD) behind32.Responsibilities _ becoming a father.A) charge forB) go withC) save forD) go through33.No one imagined that the apparently _ business man was really a criminal.A) respectiveB) respectableC) respectfulD) reverent34.They were under the _ that the company was doing well, but in fact it was in serious trouble.A. conclusionB. expressionC. convictionD. illusion35.I didnt know what to do, but then an idea suddenly _ to me.A. appearedB. happenedC. occurredD. emerged36.The United Nations Conference on Global Environment, which took place earlier this year in Vienna, was a very _ meeting.A. productiveB. communicativeC. aggressiveD. protective37.It was difficult to guess what her _ to the news would be.A. reactionB. commentC. impressionD. opinion38.She _ a new idea for increasing sales.A. came up withB. came up atC. came byD. came for39.To increase our working efficiency, it is necessary to take advantage _ every moment we have.A. inB. fromC. ofD. to40.His company promised to pay for his health _ in addition to other benefits.A) examinationB) certificateC) checkD) insurance41.As so many overseas and domestic business people have come to invest and build new businesses, the place looks much more _ than it did a few years ago.A) propertiedB) tediousC) prosperousD) unremarkable42.A completely new situation is likely to _ when the school leaving age is raised to 16.A) affectB) riseC) ariseD) happen43.She is very nice, but because she has a _ way she is slow in making friends.A) forbidB) forbiddingC) forbadeD) forbidden44.I tried very hard to persuade him to join our group but I met with a flat _.A) disapprovalB) rejectionC) refusalD) decline45.Some of your suggestions have been adopted but others have been _ as they are not workable.A. turned awayB. turned downC. turned backD. turned out46.The observers statement about the accident was very _; we know almost every thing about it now.A. specificB. especialC. exceptionalD. special47.A friendship may be _, relaxed, situational or deep and lasting.A. identicalB. originalC. criticalD. superficial48.It is useful to be able to predict the extent _ which a price change will affect supply and demand.A. fromB. withC. toD. for49.He lost his parents at ten and had to live at his uncles _.A) costB) chargeC) expenseD) pay50.The National Industrial Recovery Act was designed to _ industry, to make it develop more quickly.A) taxB) stimulateC) controlD) trap51.It is well known that knowledge is the _ condition for expansion of mind.A) incompatibleB) incredibleC) indefiniteD) indispensable52.This expert will _ his remarks to e-business(电子商务) this time.A. coordinateB. renderC. confineD. depict53.He was _ admittance to the theatre for not being properly dressed.A. deniedB. rejectedC. repelledD. deprived54.You have to _ grammar mistakes from the essay before you hand it in.A. judgeB. displayC. revealD. eliminate55.A _ of robbers broke into the bank and took away all the money.A. bunchB. schoolC. rankD. gang56.Shall we request the chairman _ our suggestion again?A) to considerB) consideringC) considerD) considered57.Not that John doesnt want to help you, _ its beyond his power.A) but thatB) for thatC) and thatD) in that58.He11 soon get _ his disappointment and be quite cheerful again by the morning.A) out ofB) overC) awayD) through59.With the increasing of environmental awareness, many green belts _ all over the country.A) spring offB) spring upC) spring
