好的学习习惯比成绩更重要Activity 1 注意用来描述上升和下降的动词(上升:rise, increase, go up,下降:decrease, go down)、形容词及副词(dramatically 急剧地, sharply明显地)的应用;学习动名词短语充当主语;表达数量的词汇:用百分比表示;a large proportion of大部分的 , the majority of大部分的 , under低于, over超过, ;现在完成时的应用。 Government figures in a recent survey show that British people do housework for an average of three hours a day. This figure has fallen dramatically in the last thirty years because of the increase in labour-saving devices (washing machines, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, etc.). 数字:figure, number: Figure数字(尤指09) He has an income of six figures.Number 号码,数字,数目 3, 13, 33 and 103 are numbers. Three hours a day, every day, every other day 表原因:because后面跟句子, because of后面跟短语;Consequently, leisure time has increased. The number of TVs, stereos, videos, CD and DVD players, etc. has also risen sharply during the last decade because using these has become the most important leisure activity. 99% of people have spent time watching television the past four weeks and 78% of people have listened to records or CDs and tapes. However, listening to tapes and records decreases with age, and gardening for pleasure rises sharply. 63% of 55 64 year-olds have spent time gardening in the past four weeks compared to 21% of 20 24 year-olds. Just under half the households in the UK (45%) own a pet. Pets range from dogs, cats and rabbits to the more exotic animals, such as snakes, lizards and tropical fish. Dogs used to be the most popular pet, but changes in lifestyle and the family structure have now made cats more popular than dogs because they are more independent and need less care. A large proportion of people 【who own a dog】 own only one dog (78%). Although the majority of people who own a cat own only one cat, over a third (38%) own two or more cats. More than half the dogs in Britain are pedigree (52%) , but only a small proportion of cats are pedigree (8%). Did you know there are some very special dogs 【doing good work in our hospital wards】? These are PAT (Pets As Therapy) dogs. Doctors and nurses are recognizing the benefits of pets more and more particularly for children, people with mental illnesses and elderly people 【who are separated from their own pets or have had to give up their pets】. Stroking and playing with a pet is a calming experience and something to look forward to. One hospital reported that a man with a mental illness,【 who hadnt spoken for years, 】first stroked and played with a visiting dog and then started talking to it. Today, around 4,500 dogs and 50 cats and their volunteer owners are at work in the UK bringing comfort and pleasure to over 100,000 people in hospital. There are many other “working dogs”. There are guard dogs, police dogs, hunting dogs and dogs for the blind. Disabled people benefit greatly. Take the case of Alan Smythe, who has to visit hospital every month. Some things are difficult for him because he is in a wheelchair. But his life has altered dramatically since he got a dog, Tess, from the charity “Dogs for the Disabled”. “She helps me to get dressed, and she brings me my socks and shoes. She fetches the newspaper form the shop, and she passes me the phone when it rings. I feel so much better too. Its like having a really good friend. She comes with me to hospital. Once, she saved my life. I am a diabetic and one day my blood sugar level dropped, and when I was going into a coma she went next door and she alerted my neighbour. He gave me an insulin injection. Activity 12My next door neighbour, May, goes to the hospital every week with her dog to work on the PAT dog scheme (组织). Shes a volunteer she is only paid for travel expenses (旅费). When patients (患者) are separated from their pets, they miss them very much. Some of the patients have mental illnesses and they get on better with animals than they do with people. One patient likes to throw a small ball and the dog fetches it. One day a patient dropped his newspaper and the dog ran to pick it up for him. May says she really enjoys going to the hospital and her opinions about voluntary work have altered dramatically. In fact, she recognizes that she is benefiting from the visits as much as the patients and her dog. Activity 14Part AIm Police Sergeant Simon Woodrow and I work for Thames Valley Police. My main responsibility is to supervise ten dog handlers who work all over Buckinghamshire.I have another responsibility. Me and my dog work with a team of people, who use firearms. Me and my dog often go to any firearms incidents that happen within the Thames Valley area.Part BWe use the dogs natural abilities to search for people and to find people. A dog also has the ability to bite people, of course, and we also use that ability too when necessary. We use them when we find and arrest criminals. We also use them fo find property and to find missing people, who may have got lost or left their homes for some reason. We are often called on to search for old people or young people
