The schoolchildren he shot and killed were between the ages of 5 and 10. The shooting stopped when Lanza put a bullet in his own head.April 2, 2012: In the state of California, a man killed seven people and wounded three others at Oikos University, a Christian school in Oakland. Police identified the suspect as One L. Goh, 43, a Korean, who submitted to the police at a Safeway supermarket in Alameda, Calif. The university claimed (声称) the shooter was a former nursing student.Feb. 14, 2008: In the state of Illinois, a gunman broke into Northern Illinois University and opened fire aimlessly at more than 160 students and teachers, killing six people and wounding more than 10 others before shooting himself dead. Police say the gunman was Steven Kazmierczak, 27, a former graduate student in Sociology at the school.March 21, 2005: In the state of Minnesota, a 16yearold student Jeff Weise shot dead five students, a security guard and a teacher at Red Lake High School before killing himself during a shootout with police. Weise had killed his grandfather and his grandfathers companion before heading to school that day.1Where was Adam Lanzas mother shot?A. At Sandy Hook Elementary School.B. At Red Lake High School. 由文章第二段“shot his mother Nancy in the face at the home they shared in Newtown”可知C项正确。2How many people did the shooter kill at school on March 21, 2005?A. 26. B. 9.C. 5. D. 7. 3Which shooter was caught alive?A. One L. Goh. B. Adam Lanza.C. Jeff Weise. D. Steven Kazmierczak. BMany scientists are now exploring the idea of going to live on Mars. Some other scientists from the NASA Ames Research Center have already started the creation of a “Mars town” and many others are in fact already experimenting with it. Of course, these experiments are done on Earth itself but this “Mars town” has an environment practically like that of Mars. The astronauts working in these towns wear their space suit and also do everything they would really have to carry out if they ever go to Mars in the future. But Mars would be like Earth, a temporary (暂时的) place for humans. When the Sun starts swallowing up the planets, Mars will disappear only hours after Earth. So Mars only seems to be the ideal place to spread the human beings. It is also a good location to send humans if ever there is a disaster on Earth. By saying disaster, I mean asteroids (小行星) hitting and things like that.If we humans do not want to disappear when Earth or Mars gets swallowed up, we will have to go and live beyond the solar system. But are there any planets outside our solar system prepared to support life? Astronomers answer is:“If Earth can support life, why cant other planets do the same too? Astronomers have already discovered a Jupiterlike planet orbiting (绕轨道运动) a Sunlike star, so why not an Earthlike planet orbiting a Sunlike star next?”To achieve this goal though, many other problems have to be taken into consideration. How do we transform a dusty planet like Mars into one more or less like our Earth? How should we go on? There is still a long way to go.语篇解读当太阳最终开始吞噬行星时,地球会在瞬间消失,茫茫宇宙,哪里才是人类未来的安身之所?4The “Mars town” mentioned in the passage is _.A. a research based on MarsB. a strange place found on MarsC. an experimental lab built on EarthD. a town existing in scientists imagination答案与解析C细节理解题。根据第一段“Of course, these experiments are done on Earth itself but this Mars town has an environment practically like that of Mars”可知, Mars town是科学家模拟火星环境在地球上建的一个实验室。5Why would Mars only be a temporary place for humans?A. It is too small to admit so many human beings.B. It lacks enough natural resources humans need.C. It would disappear when Earth disappeared.D. It has more natural disasters like asteroids hitting. 6We can know from the passage that astronomers probably think _.A. it is impossible to transport humans to other planetsB. there may be an Earthlike planet outside the solar systemC. humans will move to the newfound Jupiterlike planetD. theres no need for humans to move beyond the solar system答案与解析B细节理解题。 7Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?A. Mars
