“ an initial (初步的) finding has identified that one of our checkpoints did not follow proper procedures to ensure that the two individuals were on the invited guests list,” donovan said. but he also said president obama was never in any danger as well as the others at the dinner, because all the party attenders went through the security screening for weapons as there were more than three hundred people invited. “ but we do not rely on just magnetometers (检测仪) or the level of screenings, ” he added. “ thats why we have the guards with our protectees at all times ”. the following are more lucks always been ruined. just look at my name: jean. not jean marie, or jeanine, or jeanette, or even jeanne. just jean. did you know in france, they name boys jean? its french for john. and okay, i dont live in france. but still, im basically a girl named john. if i lived in france, anyway. this is the kind of luck ive had since before mom even filled out my birth certificate. so it wasnt any big surprise to me when the cab driver didnt help me with my suitcase. id already had to tolerate arriving at the airport to find no one there to greet me, and then got no answer to my many phone calls, asking where my aunt and uncle were. did they not want me after all? had they changed their minds? had they heard about my bad luckall the way from iowaand decided they didnt want any of it to rub off on them? so when the cab driver, instead of getting out and helping me with my bags, just pushed a little button so that the trunk (汽车后备箱) popped open a few inches, it wasnt the worst thing that had ever happened to me. it wasnt even the worst thing that had happened to me that day. according to my mom, most brownstones in new york city were originally single-family homes when they were built way back in the 1800s. but now theyve been divided up into apartments, so that theres oneor sometimes even two or more familiesper floor. not moms sister evelyns brownstone, though. aunt evelyn and uncle ted gardiner own all four floors of their brownstone. thats practically one floor per person, since aunt evelyn and uncle ted only have three kids, my cousins tory, teddy, and alice. back home, we just have two floors, but there are seven people living on them. and only one bathroom. not that im complaining. still, ever since my sister courtney discovered blow-outs, its been pretty frightful at home. but as tall as my aunt and uncles house was, it was really narrowjust three windows across. still, it was a very pretty townhouse, painted gray. the door was a bright, cheerful yellow. there were yellow flower boxes along the base of each window, flower boxes from which bright redand obviously newly planted, since it was only the middle of april, and not quite warm enough for them. it was nice to know that, even in a sophisticated (世故的) city like new york, people still realized how homey and welcoming a box of flowers could be. the sight of those flowers cheered me up a little. like maybe aunt evelyn and uncle ted just forgot i was arriving today, and hadnt deliberately failed to meet me at the airport because theyd changed their minds about letting me come to stay. like everything was going to be all right, after all. yeah. with my luck, probably not. i started up the steps to the front door of 326 east sixty-ninth street, then realized i couldnt make it with both bags and my violin. leaving one bag on the sidewalk, i dragged the other up the steps with me. maybe i took the steps a little too fast, since i nearly tripped and fell flat on my face on the sidewalk. i managed to catch myself at the last moment by grabbing some of the fence the gardeners had put up67. why did the author go to new york?a. she intended to go sightseeing there. b. she meant to stay with her aunts family. c. she was homeless and adopted by her aunt.d. she wanted to try her luck and find a job there. 68. according to the author, some facts account for her bad luck except that _. a. she was given a boys name in frenchb. the cab driver didnt help her with her bagsc. her sister courtney discovered blow-outs d. nobody had come to meet her at the airport69. the underlined phrase “rub off on” in paragraph 3 probably means _.a. have an effect on b. play tricks on c. put pressure on d. throw doubt on70. from the passage, we can know that _. a. the author left home without informing her motherb. the author arrived in new york in a very warm seasonc. her aunts family lived a much better life than her own d. her aunt and uncle were likely to forget about her arrival10以下是某个英语杂志有关专家对一些读者反映问题的建议:a. feel grateful!you say youre thankful, but then dismiss your moms investment as an “obligation”. by todays economic standards, what she did is virtually miraculous. tell your mom plainly, over and over again, how grateful you are. im sure the complaining will begin to fade.b. tame the beast! when one boy discovers his inner caveman, he likes to initiate others into the tribe. dont over-worry. boys will be boys. you and your husband should meet the boys parents down the street, suggesting a plan to either tame the wild beasts or limit their time together.c. good effort and goodwill makes it! maybe there was a reason why your buddy was out of work. hes taking advantage of you and your employer. remind him how to act on the job. he owes good effort and goodwill if he accepts the pay. tell him to be quiet or get away.d. calm down! fast vehicles and wild people-sounds like adolescent dreams to me. as some men age, they compensate with bigger, faster toys. but hes putting you at risk and breaking the law. in a calm moment outside the car, tell him that he is scaring you. suggest he join a car club, one that promotes safe driving.e. move your line away! you say youre “in the middle”, but id say youre dangerously close to slipping off the edge. there are lots of fish in the sea; why drop your line in waters your friend is still fishing?f. speak out and breathe easily together! you are rebuilding a relationship with new trust and affection. if theres a bad odor left from the old day, you need to clear the air. mention the problem, and say, “im sorry for my part in that argument.” ill bet shell say the same.以下是一些读者在生活中反映的问题。请匹配问题及对应的建议。56. allan: my friend jim was out of work and i helped him find a job in my company. but recently i have found he is very lazy and doesnt do his work well. besides, he often tells me that our employer is too bad.57. mary: cathy and i were good friends. but two years ago she moved and left me because we had an argument. now i hear she has come back to this town and lives about a mile away. i hope to visit this old friend, but i really dont know what to do.58. mrs. green: my eight-year-old son used to be obedient. but recently hes become wild and crazy like a barbarian and doesnt want to stay at home. my husband and i get worried. now i find he likes to play with another boy who is also a barbarian.59. mike: i live with my mother, who works night and day so that she can support my schooling. im grateful but sometimes i get even more annoyed because she seems to be always unsatisfied with me and complains about my faults.60. eileen: my friend jim is a helpful young man, and he has taken me downtown in his car several times. but every time he drove his car so crazily that i felt horrible. “ive got used to driving fast,” he says. some students get so nervous before a test, they do poorly even if they know the material. sian beilock, a psychology professor at the university of chicago in illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. sian beilock says: “they start worrying about the consequences. they might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. and when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. i talk about them as their cognitive(认知的)horsepower that they could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.”professor beilock and another researcher, gerardo ramirez, have developed a possible solution. just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. the researchers tested the idea on a group of 20 anxious college students. they gave them two short math tests. after the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. the researchers added to the pressure. they told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. they also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.professor beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12 percent worse on the second test. but the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. they told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.professor beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of b+, compared to a b-for those who did not.the research shows that for students who are highly test-anxious, whod done the writing intervention(介入), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. those students most likely to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who dont normally get nervous in these testing situations.but what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? professor beilock says
