In 1662, King Charles II of England married the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza who brought with her, as part of her dowry, a small chest of tea. As the new queen, Catherine began the serving of tea to her friends at court.1662年,英格兰国王查理二世迎娶了葡萄牙布拉干萨王朝的凯瑟琳公主。 Although there is mention of five oclock tea in France in the 17th century, the credit for the invention of Afternoon Tea is given to Anna Russell, duchess of Bedford who, during the long gap between an early breakfast and very late dinner, experienced what she called a sinking feeling at about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. She asked her maid to bring her a pot of tea, a little bread and butter and cake in her room. She found this arrangement so agreeeable that she began asking her friends to join her. High tea, a term often confused with afternoon tea, usually takes the place of supper. During the Industrial Revolution, working class families would return home tired and exhausted. The table would be set with dinner foods like meat, bread, butter, potatoes, cheese and of course tea. It was termed high tea because it was eaten at a high dining table rather than a low tea table. Afternoon tea (because it was usually taken in the late afternoon) is also called low tea as it is served at a low table. Since this wasnt a meal, but rather like a late afternoon snack meant to stave off hunger, finger foods were the common fare. Tiny, dainty sandwiches, scones and pastries were served with afternoon tea. Finger foods afforded one the opportunity to take a petite bite and easily maintain a conversation. This is most important, as one is not merely taking tea to gain nourishment or satisfy hunger, but to take time to relax, converse and enjoy the company of dear friends. In England, the traditional time for tea was four oclock or five oclock in the afternoon and no one stayed after seven oclock. When related to afternoon tea, what would you think of? A cup of tea, a piece of cake and a good mood, what a good enjoyment! But do you know how comes the afternoon tea? That we should thank for a lady, who had created the custom of afternoon tea in the year 1840. She is Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. At that time, people of upper class usually had supper at around 8 oclock in the evening. But Anna began to feel hungry at round 4 in the afternoon. This had left her a good long time of 4 hours. Therefore, she told the servant to bring a tray of tea, bread, butter and cake to her room during the late afternoon. It became a habit of hers. Soon, she invited her friends to join her.Afternoon tea was favored by most women, because they then have reason to get together and killing the leisure time more meaningfully. After Annas launch of the afternoon tea, women of the aristocracy did the same in their home and it later became a fashionable social event, providing a place for people to meet new friends and get new information. The traditional afternoon tea usually contains a teapot of tea, several teacups and pastries. There are different types of pastries: a selection of dainty sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserves, teacakes etc. English tea is mainly from India or Ceylon, which was originally transported by the East India Company.Today, afternoon tea has been simplified because of the change of lifestyle. People use tea bags instead of infusing tea leaves. Pastries are no longer as various and sophisticated as that of long time ago. They usually are some pieces of biscuits or cakes. But if you want to experience a real English afternoon tea, I would advise you to Devonshire, where produces good clotted cream and famous cream tea. The tea consists of cups of hot and sweet tea served in china teacups and scones, strawberry jam as well as the fine clotted cream
