Design Proposal for Luyang Sea Crossing in Phase I Project of Yang Shan Deepwater Port Chapter XIIChapter XIIAesthetic Design12.1 BriefShanghai, situated in the middle of Chuang Jiang, Dung Hai, Hang Zhou bay, is the potential port for future economic development. Hence, a deep harbour is necessary to be constructed such that big ships can enter and makes Shanghai as an internationally transport and transit centre. The construction of the Lu Yang Bridge can solve the cargo transport problem between Hong Kong and Mainland China and inner city and outer islands. It can also easily resolve the supply of water, electricity and telecommunication systems between Hong Kong and the Mainland. The associated advantages include the potential rise in value of land adjacent to the Bridge and Lu Chao Harbour city will also be developed as well following the development of Yang Shan Deepwater Port area. The development of Lu Chao Harbour city will lead to development of the whole Po Dung area.12.2 Bridge Aesthetic DesignThe surrounding to the port is open and spacious with the unique ocean view which extends to far horizons. Hence, the huge Bridge structure will standout and become the local viewpoint, therefore the aesthetic design appearance is crucial. The bridge design nowadays not only must satisfy its functional purposes and outlook including the long span, strong physical appearance but also higher expectations from the cultural, geological side etc. Therefore, it is necessary to satisfy its functional purposes as well as the regional background, technological, economical and aesthetic issues. To gain economies of scales, Lu Yang Bridge should incorporate artistic and technological advancement. Hence in the Bridge design, we have to give the Bridge a unique cultural appearance which enhances the locals feelings and reflect our creativity.12.3 Environmental Design1. Natural EnvironmentShanghai is close to the Chuang Jiang delta with East China Sea in the East, Hang Zhou Bay in the South, Tiang-su/Zhe-jiang in the West and Chuang Jiang in the North. It is situated in the middle of the North-South Coastal Line where transportation is easy, land is spacious and is located in a geographically sound port area. Within the region of Shanghai, there are lots of low leveled plains. Shanghai belongs to the plains of Chuang Jiang delta, with an average sea datum level of approximately 4m. Hang Zhou bay is the biggest trumpet shaped harbour, with an average 8 10m sea level. The bottom sea level is flat, the harbour starts nearby Han Pu with a width of 20 kilomiles and ends at area from mouth of Nai-Hui, Shanghai to Zhen Hai of Ning Bo with a width of approximately 100 kilomiles. Within the harbour, there are lots of coral reef which is the unique attraction of the port. The site for constructing the Lu Yang Bridge is formed by sand fill, and it is currently surrounded by the harbour and subjected to tidal effects. The G1 area to the Bridge is used as a fish pond, G1-G3 area is used as a planting pond and G3 to area at height 1.0m is the beach. The Bridge is located in the flat part of the sea at water depths of 5 12 m. 2. Human DevelopmentThere is already human existence with great inventions in the area as early as more than 5000 years ago at the Stone Age. And there is also “Wu Yue Culture”, once ruling the region, origining from the site during Chun-Qiu Zhan-Guo Period. Today, Shanghai becomes the most prominent city with great historical treasures and strong cultural background. It is the most treasured city with few thousand years of history and different resources. During Nan Song Period, southward transference of royalty felicitates the blending of southern and northern culture and arts. Tang Poem, Song Expression, Yuan Song , Ming and Qing legend and other culture developed completely during this period, some of them even formed specific cultural character of grace and purity, modesty and tranquility. Mr. Lu Xun, a well-known writer of Modern China, once said, historic culture benefits mankind most in rebuilding humanity and molding personality. Therefore, the combination of cultural sight with bridge design can be lifted to a height of spiritual and civilized process, seeking unification of material substance and spiritual connotation in syndrome differentiation. From ancient time to present, bridge, with its unique charm, has always been associated with urban image: The romantic “Galaxy Bridge” for Wu Gang and Chang E, Lu Gou Bridge, which witnessed historic vicissitude and modern bridges reflecting scientific and technological progress of China. Bridges endowed with culture bear outstanding vitality, which proofs that only tight combination of humanistic and cultural sight with bridge design can produce scene of “Vitality and Connotation”.12.4 Creativity in Aesthetic Design1. Cultural IssuesLu Yang Cross Bridge Design not only requires natural scientific skills but also require the integration of “cultural” ingredient, to combine and form a special historical background design. This local culture has brought in the traditional Chinese culture and since Shanghai represents the modern productivity in China and its busy city life reflects affections from different international cultures, this Bridge must be designed to reflect the “historical and contemporary” era.2. Geological IssuesLu Yang Bridge is the transportation leeway and scenic outlook connecting the city and the islands, it also connects the natural environment between the two areas. Also the aesthetic appearance of the bridge combined with the suitable design to match with the geological condition of Lu Chao Bay reflects the geology features of the area.3. Contemporary IssuesLu Yang Bridge will become the landmark of the two areas. The highly technical structure amazes all and reflects it positive, exciting contemporary outlook. In this case, the prestressed bridge within the main navigation channel is a straightly aligned strong cable-stayed bridge. The cable-stayed bridge composes of pier, cables and beams in a triangular stringed form, which reflects its “upstand and aggressive” contemporary image. 4. OverallThe overall built-up image of the Bridge needs to satisfy the target audiences which includes taking into account the artistic aspect, speed, distance and other affections because the bridge design will affect high-speed road users. Hence, the overall appearance and scheme is our target. 12.5 Design of Aesthetic Appearance1. Order of AppearanceAccording to the ancient philosophy, the bridge design must be straightly aligned and compose of strong, shiny and firm material such as those used for the pier, beam and column. These are classified as “Basic Composition”. The curved, soft, tender and empty space such as the cables, tendons, the space above and under bridge deck are classified as “the Imaginery”. “The Real and the Imaginery” will combine to one unique living entity to create a musical living creature that is rhythmic. This provides a unique visual effect. The rhythm itself is important and is structured by the uniform appearance of the pier, the hand-railings and the light posts etc. Although the arrangement itself is simple but the order itself created a live style. This is especially outstanding at night when the lights reflect the curved, straight bridge alignment. A complete vision is created by the tendons in this Bridge design. Its reflection in the great ocean has created a strong rhythmic piece: 1. The bridge is named after the city and it signals the “beginning”; 2. the prestressed bridge in the side navigation channel, the open bridge and the cable-stayed bridge in the main navigation channel combine to form a special visual effect 3. The adjacent islands reflect the natural environment of the area which finishes this masterpiece. The plan model of the bridge is composed of curved lines to prevent long-distance driver from getting tired. It also gives the bridge a live characteristics. Hence “ the road created the view”. 2. Analysis of Bridge Tower The two towers between the cable-stayed bridge across the main navigation channel is 380m wide, the main tower is Y-shaped and the shape gave a very strong appearance. The draft tower structure composes of mainly straight lines and there is a sense of hidden strengths. As observed from the bridge deck, it seems like these towers are trying to reach the sky.Single pylon type cable-stayed bridge is the usual singe faced design and the shape is simple. Although not necessary, but the top part of the tower is lifted higher up than the tendons to provide more visual balance and to maintain a firm and tall feeling. The columns in the tower have been constructed such that its “all around cutting” and “concave shaped shaft” give a sense of “wide-angled” vision. The columns face from top to bottom is also diamond-shaped and hence has created more empty space and better appearance. Also, the concaved shaft makes the tower more outstanding and provided a more 3-D outlook under the sunlight reflection. Bridge expert, Lion Harter of Germany once said: “ Lightness takes an extremely important role in large scale bridge, it can not only reduce the weight pressed over water, but also add to an impression of hovering, appearing charm of grace and vividness”. In the case, the proposed bridge will have an artistic and light appearance and it is easy to construct.3.Perspective Design from Side Navigation channel The reinforced bridge is the most traditional type of bridge yet the most practical, economical and simple type. Its artistic appearance is the most outstanding at the sea datum level where its arms seem to stretch far to the left and to the right. This has an exact opposing view from the high-rise part of the cable-stayed bridge structure.12.6 Bridge and the Environment under Night-lightingTo design the bridge appearance under lighting at nights, an analysis of the surrounding environment is necessary. From our preliminary estimate, most of the future lighting in the Lu Chao harbour will concentrate around the docking pier and will be for lighting purposes only. Hence the amount of lighting will be sparse but harmonious.12.7 Night Vision DesignFollowing the modernization era, night-lighting is no longer by oil burning and night-life is already common to all and most importantly, it will enhance the aesthetic appearance of the Bridge. Hence night vision is one of the most important factor in designing the Bridge.1. Zones of LightingA. Ordinary LightingIn order to provide adequate lighting for traffic, the most ordinary type of lighting is lamp-post type with high lighting source to cater for a larger area. There can be various alternative ways to provide the same effect but this type can provide a type of continuity and the whole scheme provides unobstructed and better night vision for the drivers. Secondly, the same type of material should be used for both the lamppost and the hand railing for consistency in style. This is especially important for something like the Hang Zhou Bay Bridge which is large in size and the location has special representative features. B. Daytime LightingFollowing technological advancement, decoration lighting is important to bring us into a colourful and modernization world. New sources of energy and new lighting systems can give modern bridge design a new image: good shape, lightness, openness, freedom and a stretching feel. Neon lighting, revolving lighting, projected lights together with head lights from moving traffic and reflection from the water surface, have created a lively and colourful world. The Bridge structure and details under the light reflection will be very outstanding and it will blend into the environment harmoniously with different colour lighting representing different themes, e.g. using more warm colours in winters; cool colours in summers, wide-angled lighting from sunset to nighttime and less amount of lighting at night to preserve energy resources.2. Ways to LitDecoration lighting can be classified into three types: single source lit-up system, line-type system and area type system. 1). The design and layout of the single source lit-up system depends on mainly the importance of the part of the bridge, therefore the main navigation channel will have more lights and both ends of the bridge will have relatively less lights. This is to emphasize the major parts of the bridge other than the tower. 2). The design of the line-type system can be arranged to match with the shape of the bridge such that the space in-between can be emphasized. If dim tubes are used for reflection lighting, there is a mysterious feel and is very poetic. 3). The area type system focuses on using different tones of lighting for different zones and the bright and dim lighting can cast a distinct colour pattern and a strong emphasis of space. These three types of decoration lighting system can be used together to c
