Pollys son, Jim, had great difficulty in school. He was classified as the educationally disabled and required a great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid with a great smile that lit up the room. His parents acknowledged his academic difficulties, but always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride. Shortly after Jim finished high school, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother submitted this letter to the newspaperToday we buried our 20-year-old son. He was killed instantly in a motorcycle accident on Friday night. How I wish I had known when I talked to him last that it would be the last time. If I had only known I would have said, “Jim, I love you and Im very proud of you.”I would have taken the time to count the many blessings he brought to the lives of the many who loved him. I would have taken the time to appreciate his beautiful smile, the sound of his laughter, his genuine love of people. When you put all the good qualities on the scale and try to balance all the irritating phenomena such as the radio which was always too loud, the haircut that wasnt to our liking, the dirty socks under the bed, etc., your angry feelings wont amount to much.I wont get another chance to tell my son all that I would have wanted him to hear, but, other parents, you do have a chance. Tell your young people what you would want them to hear if you knew it would be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the day he died. He called me to say, “Hi, Mom! I just called to say I love you. Got to go to work. Bye.” He gave me something to treasure forever. If there is any purpose at all for Jims death, maybe it is to make others appreciate more of life and to have people, especially family members, take the time to let each other know just how much we care. You may never have another chance.56. According to the passage, we know that _.A. Jim was always ashamed of himself B. Jim did very well in his studiesC. Jims parents were patient with him D. But was the positive thinking advocate Norman Vincent Peale right? Is there power in positive thinking?Researchers in Canada just published a study in Psychological Science that says trying to get people to think more positively can actually have the opposite effect: it can simply stress how unhappy they are. The studys authors, Joanne Wood and John Lee of the University of Waterloo and Elaine Perunovic of the University of New Brunswick, begin by using older research showing that when people get feedback which they believe is overly positive, they actually feel worse, not better. If you tell your friend who is not very clever that he has the potential of an Einstein, youre just underlining his faults. In the 1990s, a team including psychologist Joel Cooper of Princeton conducted an experiment. The participants were asked to write essays opposing financial support for the disabled, expressing little sympathy for them. When these participants were later praised for their sympathy, they felt even worse about what they had written. In this experiment, Wood, Lee and Perunovic measured 68 students self-respect. The participants were then asked to write down their thoughts and feelings for four minutes. Every 15 seconds, one group of students heard a bell. When it rang, they were supposed to tell themselves, “I am lovable.” Those with low self-respect didnt feel better after the forced self-approval. In fact, their feelings turned significantly worse than those of members of the control group, who werent urged to think positive thoughts. www. The study provides support for newer forms for psychotherapy (心理治疗) that urge people to accept their negative thoughts and feelings rather than fight them. In the fighting, we not only often fail but can make things worse. Meditation (静思) techniques, on the contrary, can teach people to realize their shortcomings from a larger, more realistic perspective. Call it the power of negative thinking.67. What is the finding of the Canadian researchers?A. There can be no simple solutions to psychological problems.B. Encouraging positive thinking may do harm to people.C. The power of positive thinking is limited.D. Unhappy people cannot think positively.68. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 probably means _.A. you are pointing out the mistakes he has madeB. you are not taking his mistakes seriously enoughC. you are stressing the fact that he is not intelligentD. you are not trying to make him feel better about his faults69. What do we learn from the experiment of Wood, Lee and Perunovic?A. Self-approval can bring a positive change to ones feelings.B. People with low self-respect seldom write down their true feelings.C. It is important for people to continually improve their self-respect.D. Forcing people to think positive thoughts may lower their self-respect.70. It can be learned from the last paragraph that _.A. people can avoid making mistakes through meditationB. different people tend to have different ways of thinkingC. meditation may prove to be a good form of psychotherapyD. the effects of positive thinking differ from person to person第二卷(两部分,共35分)第四部分、任务型阅读(共10题,每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下列短文,并在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。每空一词。Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better lif
