The writer went to the theatre last week. He did not enjoy the play. A young man and a young woman were sitting behind him. They were talking loudly. The writer could not hear the actors. He turned round and said, I could not hear a word. But the young man said rudely, Its none of your business. This is a private conversation.The writer always gets up late on Sundays. Last Sunday he got up very late. Then His aunt telephoned him. She had just arrived by train and she was coming to see him. Im still having breakfast, he said. His aunt was very surprised because it was one oclock.Postcards always spoil the writers holidays. Last summer he spent his holiday in Italy. He thought about the postcards every day. He didnt send any cards to his friends. On the last day he bought thirty-seven postcards. He spent the whole day in his room without writing a single card.The writer has just received a letter from his brother, Tim. Tim is an engineer and he has been in Australia for six months. He has already visited a great many places in Australia. Now he is in Alice Springs. Tim has never been abroad before, so he is enjoying his trip very much.Mr. Scott has opened his second garage in Pinhurst and his first garage is in Silbury. Pinhurst is only five miles away from Silbury, but Mr. Scott could not get a telephone for his new garage, so he has just bought twelve pigeons. The birds can cover the distance in three miniute.The writer has just moved to a house in Bridge Street. Yesterday a beggar knocked at his door. He sang songs and asked for a meal. In return for this, the writer gave him a meal. The beggars name is Percy Buttons. He calls at every house in the street once a month.Detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa. After the arrival of the plane, two men took the parcel into the Customs House. Two detectives opened the precious parcel, which was full of stones and sand.Joe Sanders has the most beautiful garden in town. Each year he wins a prize for the nicest garden in the town. Bill Frith has a fine garden, too. But Joes garden is better. The writers garden is terrible and he always wins a prize for the worst garden in the town.We went to the Town Hall on New Years Eve. There were a large crowd of people under the Town Hall Clock. In twenty minutes time it would strike twelve, but at five to twelve the big clock stopped. It refused to welcome the New Year. The crowd then began to laugh and sing.We own an old clavichord which was made in 1681. Our grandfather bought the instrument many years ago but it was damaged by a visitor recently. She tried to play jazz on it and two of the strings were broken. Its now being repaired by a friend of my fathers.I was having a dinner at a restaurant when Tony Steele came in. He always borrows money from his friends. Tony saw me and came and sat at the same table. While he was eating, I asked him to lend me twenty pounds. He gave me the money immediately and asked me to pay for his dinner.We shall meet our neighbour, Captain Charles Alison, at Portsmouth Harbour early tomorrow morning. He will take part in an important race across the Atlantic. He will set out at 8 oclock tomorrow morning and we shall say goodbye to him after seeing his boat.The Greenwood Boys are a group of pop singers and they will be coming here tomorrow. Most of the young people will be meeting them at the station. They will give five performances and the police will be trying to keep orders as usual.The writer gave a lift to a young man in the south of France last year. They greeted each other in French. Apart from a few words, the writer doesnt know any French at all. So they sat in silence. At the end of the journey, the young man asked the writer if he could speak English. The young man was English himself.Mr. Harmsworth wanted to see me and I felt very nervous. I went into his office and sat down. He told me that the business was bad and the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people had already left, but he didnt ask me to leave at last. The traffic police usually give you a ticket if you park your car in the wrong place. During a holiday in Sweden, the writer found a polite note on his car. The traffic policeman wanted him to pay attention to their street signs. Anyone cannot fail to obey a request like this.My a
