He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down at the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought that someone would dance on the beach. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasnt dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer, he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing? The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfishes (海星) into the ocean.”“I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfishes into the ocean?”“The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I dont throw them in, theyll die”“But, young man, dont you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfishes all along it. It came on heels of the term “second-generation rich”, which became popular around the time of the Hangzhou drunk-driving controversy. This term referred to the children of upstart (爆发户) millionaire and entrepreneurs(企业家). So, the term “second-generation poor” describes the children of poverty-stricken families. This is especially so when discussing the negative impact that familys financial situation has on a future career. According to a China Youth Daily poll of several hundred college students in Zhejiang, Henan, and Beijing, 65 percent say they worry that their family background could put them at a disadvantage in looking for a job. Pan Hongqi, writing in Beijing Youth Daily, says that the job hunt has become a competitive game based on family background. Those from rich, powerful families find satisfactory jobs without the least bit of trouble, often arranged for them by the parents. Wu Jie, writing on R, says that this phenomenon damages the countrys equality. When college students have to rely on parents connections and social status to get a good job, the normal way young people can mature is taken away, causing social distortions(扭曲)and long-term damage. Huang Chaofeng, also at R, writes that its doubtful whether the term “second-generation poor” is a meaningful one. Huang thinks that people have exaggerated the social and economic burden that poor children may bear. In fact, many of them become high achievers who hold their destiny firmly in their own hands, Huang writes.48. Paragraph 1 is mainly used to _ in the text. Janie, the driver, always tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere by talking. I try to listen politely, but usually Im too busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to. My fathers ill, she said to no one in particular. I could see worry in her eyes. I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students with a smile. With a sudden chance of interest, I asked, Whats wrong with him? With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered, Heart trouble. Her eyes lowered as she continued, Ive already lost my mum, so I dont think I can stand losing him. I couldnt answer. My heart ached for her. I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died. I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldnt want anyone to go through that. Suddenly I realized Janie wasnt only a bus driver, which was just her job. She had a whole world of family and cares too. I shouldnt have been so selfish. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant. I shouldnt have been so selfish and self-centered. Understanding people is an art. 52. When the students get on the school bus, Janie usually_. Whenever I speak to a Chinese students they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor.” I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English. First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know. Second, they are worried about making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENTNOTACCURATE. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the rules to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesnt matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears. The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking. Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, the
