Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts-running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry or a pair of gloves for Grandma, spending money is nothing. I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The new idea came in an unusual way.Our son Kevin, was wrestling at the junior level. And shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church. Our boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes while their youngsters were dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe strings seemed to be the only thing holding them together. As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets to protect their heads. Well, our boys ended up defeating them. We took every weight class.Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said, “Losing like this could take the heart out of them.” Thats when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to the inner-city church without leaving my name.On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the highlight of our Christmas.21.Justin hated Christmas mainly because .A. he thought Christmas makes no senseB. he had a hard time choosing giftsC. he spent too much money buying giftsD. he disliked shopping22.We know from the passage that the team sponsored by inner-city church .A. were well dressedB. paid attention to safety C. couldnt afford helmets D. feared Kevins team23.Justin felt sad mainly because the youngsters in the other team _.A. didnt wear any helmets B. were dressed in worn-out shoes C. may lose confidence completely D. failed in the match against his son24.The underlined that in the last paragraph refers to _.A. the envelop on the tree B. the note inside the envelop C. the gifts I sent to church D. what the writer had done B Google has kicked off Google Science Fair (GSF) 2014, its annual online competition for bright, creative and ambitious teenagers who want to change the world with science. In the rush to early reading, it seems parents prefer reading chapter books to picture books. This is a big mistake. In the second report, from Paris, a glorious exhibition of Monets works reminds us how artistic expression gives form to our thinking. The rush to read chapter books should not deprive(剥夺) children of artistic pleasure, or of one of mankinds deepest and most profound modes of thinking and feeling. I was shocked to read Julie Bosmans front page report in the New York Times, “Picture Books, Long a Staple, Lose Out in the Rush to Read. ” Is it true that parents of kindergarten and first graders are pressuring their children “to leave the picture books behind and move on to more text-heavy chapter books” all for the sake of strictly standardized testing? What has happened to cognition(认知) imagining, and feeling? If you think depriving children of picture books is a good idea, just read a wonderful “critics notebook” review from the same paper in the same week, by Michael Kimmelman: “Paris Rediscovers Monets Magic at Grand Palais.” Kimmelman describes the sweeping show of over 160 of Monets paintings as “the biggest spectacle in Europe this fall” “a box office breakthrough” but most importantly for this discussion, he goes on to explain why: Pictures, in this case of Monets, dont just “stimulate sun, rain and snow, but states of mind as well.” The same can be said of picture books they stimulate a state of mind in children that words alone cannot achieve. “Monets vision of places can come to inhabit and even take the place of our direct memories of them,” Kimmelman writes. For me, The Velveteen Rabbit a chapter book with wonderful art comes to mind: the pictures improve the value of the story. 29. The passage reminds Monets work in order to _. A. think highly of Monets works. B. prove mankinds deepest feeling C. warn people not to deprive childrens artistic pleasure D. motivate more people to learn art30. Whats the main idea of the passage? A. Explanation about two surprising reports. B. Picture books should return to the world of children C. Paris rediscovers Monets magic. D. Comments of Kimmelman about Monets works. 31. Whats the authors attitude towards childrens leaving picture books? A. ExcitedB. PuzzledC. CuriousD.
