【作业名称】:大学英语阅读理解2011-1. 【发布班级】:园林本11一_田宁_. 【发布老师】:林丽清 【作业期限】:11-11-08/12-02-29 Passage 1The nuclear age in which the human race is living, and may soon be dying, began for the general public with the dropping of an atom bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. But for nuclear scientists and for certain American authorities, it had been known for some time that such a weapon was possible. Work towards making it had been begun by the United States, Canada and Britain very soon after the beginning of the Second World War. The existence of possibly explosive forces in the nuclei of atoms had been known ever since the structure of atoms was discovered by Rutherford. An atom consists of a tiny core called the nucleus with attendant electrons circling round it. The hydrogen atom, which is the simplest and lightest, has only one electron. Heavier atoms have more and more as they go up the scale. The first discovery that had to do with what goes on in nuclei was radioactivity, which is caused by particles being shot out of the nucleus. It was known that a great deal of energy is locked up in the nucleus, but, until just before the outbreak of the Second World War, there was no way of releasing this energy in any large quantity. A revolutionary discovery was that, in certain circumstances, mass can be transformed into energy in accordance with Einsteins formula which states that the energy generated is equal to the mass lost multiplied by the square of the velocity of light.1. We learn from the passage that the A-bomb _. A brought about the nuclear age B is a terrible thing to the whole mankind C played a vital part in defeating the Japanese D was a wonderful invention2. All lawyers have had expensive and highly specialized training, and they work long, difficult hours for the money they earn. But what happens to people who need legal help and cannot afford to pay these lawyers fees?Public interest lawyers fill this need. Patricia, like other public interest lawyers, earns a salary much below what some lawyers can earn. Because she is willing to take less money, her clients have the help they need, even if they can pay nothing at all. Some clients need legal help because stores have cheated them with faulty goods. Others are in unsafe apartments, or are threatened with eviction and have no place to go. Their cases are all called civil cases. Still others are accused of criminal acts, and seek those public interest lawyers who handle criminal cases. These are just a few of the many situations in which the men and women who are public interest lawyers serve to extend justice throughout our society.6. The word client (para. 2) means _B_. As I approached the gates I switched off the headlamps of the car so as to prevent the beam from swinging in through the window and waking Jack, who shared the house with me. But I neednt have bothered. I noticed that his light was still on, so he was awake anyway - unless hed fallen asleep while reading. I put the car away and went up the steps. Then I opened the door quietly and went to Jacks room. He was in bed awake but he didnt even turn towards me.Whats up, Jack? I said. For Gods sake dont make a noise, he said. The way he spoke reminded me of someone in pain who is afraid to talk in case he does himself a serious injury.Take your shoes off, Neville, Jack said.I thought that he must be ill and that I had better humour him to keep him happy. Theres a snake here, he explained. Its asleep between the sheets. I was lying on my back reading when I saw it. I knew that moving was out of the question. I couldnt have moved even if Id wanted to. I realized that he was in earnest. I was relying on you to call a doctor as soon as you came home, Jack went on. It hasnt bitten me yet but I darent do anything to upset it. It might wake up.
