Installing SSA Firmware and Host Software on AIX SystemsFlash (Alert)AbstractThis document provides the general procedure for installing SSA code under AIX. ContentUpgrade Instructions Important: If you have early generation disk drives with level 0045 or 0046 microcode on them, please read the document Upgrade of early 3rd Generation Drives It is recommended that you upgrade both adapter microcode and AIX device drivers at the same time. IMPORTANT: The recommended procedure for updating Adapter, Enclosure Controller and Disk Drive Microcode stipulates that no i/o shall take place during these activities. In general filesystems should be unmounted and databases shutdown prior to a microcode update. In addition, the following guidelines should be followed DO NOT attempt to perform the adapter microcode download concurrently on systems that are in the same SSA loop. This may cause a portion of the loop to be isolated and could prevent access to these disks from elsewhere in the loop DO NOT run advanced diagnostics while downloads are in progress. Advanced diagnostics causes the SSA adapter to be reset temporarily, thereby introducing a break in the loop, portions of the loop may become temporarily isolated and inaccessible Ensure that you have complete SSA loops. Check this by using diagnostics in System Verification mode. If you have incomplete loops (ie strings) action must be taken to resolve this before you can continue. If necessary, place a call with your local IBM Service Center for hardware support Check that all of your loops are valid, in this case with one or two adapters in each loop. This is also done by using Diagnostics in System Verification mode. Again, if you have any illegal loops, you need to rectify this before continuing. Again place a call with the support center if needed 1. Login as Root 2. Select the download type - SSA Device Driver, Adapter microcode, or SSA Disk Drive microcode (see the download documents SSA Host Software and Adapter Microcode for AIX x where x is 4.3.3, or 5.1.0, or 5.2.0, and SSA Disk Drive and Enclosure Microcode for AIX o Create a temporary directory o Save the file ssaXXX.tar onto your system in your temporary directory o cd into your temporary directory 3. Type tar -xvf ssaXXX.tar 4. If you untar more than 1 file at a time , you must run inutoc . to create a new .toc file 5. Run smitty install 6. Select install & update software 7. Select install & update from ALL available software 8. Use the directory that you saved and unpacked the ssaXXX.tar file into as the install device 9. Select all filesets in this directory for install 10. Execute the command 11. Exit Smit 12. Run cfgmgr to install the microcode to adapters of the correct type (Note that some consideration may be needed when doing this in an active HA environment, particularly if you are not going to reboot immediately.) 13. To complete the device driver upgrade you must now reboot your system To confirm that the upgrade was a success: Type lscfg -vl ssaX where X is 0,1. for all SSA adapters Check that the microcode level shown in ROS Level and ID, matches the level shown in the document SSA Adapters and Disk Drives - latest firmware levels (AIX). Run lslpp -l|grep SSA and check that the fileset levels you have match or are above the levels shown in the document SSA Host Software for AIX - latest levels . If any of the SSA filesets are at a lower level to those shown in the above document, please repeat the whole upgrade procedure again. If after repeating the procedure, the code levels do not match the latest ones, place a call with your local IBM Service Center 14. If the adapters are in SSA loops which contain other adapters in other systems, please repeat steps 1 to 12 of this procedure on all systems as soon as possible 15. If you have 7133 D40 or T40 disk drive enclosures type the following commands cd /etc/microcode ssa_sesdld -u -f coralXXX.hex (where XXX is the highest number that you have in /etc/microcode) 16.
