Stress and Its Physical Symptoms on First-year College StudentsBeing an inevitable fact of life, stress has been perceived consciously or unconsciously by everyone, including those youthful college students, though often painted in an idyllic and ideal tone. Without a unanimous definition, stress is often noted as the physical and psychological response and adaption to the perceptions of the stimulation of life events (Glanz et al, 2008). Because freshman would easily perceive stress that lead to some physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle pains and insomnia. Its quite obvious that stress would be triggered by significant changes and challenges in life. Stressors force our body to respond or react, causing physical and mental reactions. Such causes of stress would be myriad and varied from person to person. However, some major causes of stress are apparently overwhelming such as the environment we are in, social issues such as social relationship and ones personal health (Subramaniam, 2010). First-year college students, confronted with the new changing environment and jerking from a familiar one, would easily be influenced with such stressor while other influences such as social demand of dating or academic pressure would all be noticeable stressor to first-year college students. When perceiving these causes of stress, our body would naturally respond accordingly, resulting in some physical symptoms. To find out the main physical symptoms of stress on first-year college student, an interview with a freshman at BIT was conducted. One student highlighted an empirical survey he answer that headaches and pains, fatigue and insomnia are becoming the most physical symptoms of stress among first-year college students while other mentioned symptoms including digestive problem, weight changes, sweaty issue and even teeth grinding, etc. Not surprisingly, headaches and muscle pains are most common physical symptoms of stress on first-year college students. Many students would experience a tension in the head or dizziness under stress and pressure while muscle pains in the neck and back would also be very common physical reaction to stress. Headaches and migraines, clearly a sign of neuronal imbalance in the brain as a result of significant stress, would be triggered by academic pressure and the changing environment students are facing with, which would make any additional stress more perceptible as it would increase ones sensitivity to sound and light and even lead to nausea (Mayo Clinic, 2011). Another major physical symptom to be concerned here would be insomnia as its becoming more and more serious haunting many first-year college students. As a result of stress, the body reaction would lead to sleeping disorder that student would find it hard to fall in sleep, which would lead to a comprehensive problems such as fatigue, imbalanced immune system, high blood pressure and even the risks of heart disease (Parker et al, 2004), which could bring out many more combined physical symptom such as cold. As a conclusion, first-year college students, with its changing environment and social relations, would easily perceive stress, resulting in physical symptoms such as headaches and muscle pains, insomnia. Being overstress could lead to confusions, insomnia and would bring out more physical symptoms. These symptoms affect ones health and life status in no small way.ReferencesGlanz, K., Schwartz, M., Rimer, B., & Viswanath, K.
