Celebrate From Within Book InitiativeChapter Themes:My Hero(s)I Celebrate My Nanny I am going to tell you about my Nanny and why I celebrate her. She helps me, but that is not the reason why I am telling you about her. She is a survivor of breast cancer. In spite of this she always remembers my birthday and other special holidays. She bakes cakes for me. Even though she sometimes calls me Heather or Ronah, I still think the world of her.I think other people must celebrate her too because she is always doing lots of things for others. She helps others that are sick by cleaning their house for them. When people are away she takes care of their pets and checks on their house to make sure things are ok. She baby-sits her grandchildren when their parents go away. When her neighbor works late, Nanny goes over and turns the lights on for her so she can see when she gets home at 10 oclock at night. Finally the most special thing that my Nanny and Papa do is they have a “Bike Run for Cancer” every year to raise money in memory of my Dad who died of cancer when I was 4. Then they send the money to the Cancer Society to help find ways to cure cancer. I know I am really lucky to have my Nanny in my life.My DadMy Dad is great! My Dad is awesome! My Dad does things with me!My Dad loves me And I miss him!Danielle, Grade 4BESGeorge Chuvalo is a hero. His talk to the grade ten students last week was moving and inspiring. It brought tears to my eyes. His pain and his ability to talk about it, for the benefit of others, was incredible. I have never seen an audience so riveted! I felt honored to be in his presence. He changed my perspective on some things and Ill never forget him. We need to celebrate the decision to bring him to our district! That was definitely the right choice.Elizabeth, Grade 10SRHSAn Unforgettable TimeMy DadAlthough my Dad and I always do special things together this is the one I remember perfectly. The one I like to celebrate and share. One hot sunny afternoon this spring my Dad and I, and no one else, went fishing in a secret place, so I cant tell you where! We probably fished for about an hour, or two or three. Im not sure as I did not notice the time. Dad caught more fish than me, he hooked 6 and I caught 4. It really didnt matter how many we each caught, but that I was fishing alone with my Dad!I know if we were allowed to catch more fish my Dad would have caught 100!When we were done we put the fish in a bucket filled with water so we could carry them to the camp. We only cooked up six and they tasted so good. We took the rest home for supper. Thats the story of my Dad and me fishing alone!Makayla, Grade 4BESI remember Heritage Day. It was very fun. I liked it when we danced. My dance partner was Alex. We were having so much fun that we got mixed up. At recess we got free lemonade and a horse ride. It was an awesome day!Hannah,DATLMelanie and I cleaned up a swamp/marsh where lots of frogs swim and grow. There were 8 shopping carts, 3 tires and a carpet. We even saved a goldfish; he is now the really big fish at Brunswick Nursery. The water was very cold for April and came up just over our waist. The swamp looks great now!Rachel, grade 5 LESLast year, we watched a bit of a movie in Social Studies class called Pay it Forward. Then our teacher, announced we were going to do a project on a war thats happening somewhere in the world. Then we had to plan some kind of fund-raising event to help the people in the war-torn country. Two friends of mine and I planned a huge car wash, yard sale, and BBQ all on the same day in the same place. We raised over 200$ in money for Doctors Without Borders in Mexico. It was a lot of work getting ready for the event, but it was so worth it and made us feel so good. So not only am I celebrating something we did, but also the person who inspired our idea. Hopefully this will inspire others to do the same.Joseph, Grade 9SRHSStopping to Say “Wow”!NatureThere is so much beauty in the world that we sometimes choose not to see. So much beauty, so much to see! Like nature, the beauty that nature portrays, we sometimes do not see unless it is captured in the moment by a photo. The seasons that are always changing: from winter to spring to summer to fall, the world is such a beautiful place. I love all seasons, beautiful wispy winter and we can huddle up by the fire and drink hot drinks when we all come together with our loved ones and most intimate friends, make snowmen and snow angels. In the spring, when the snow melts and the weather gets nicer, we can go dance in the rain, catch raindrops on our tongues, watch the lakes and waters turn back into sparkling pools, drenched in the sparkling sun that starts to become our friend again, the flowers that come around again are there so we can pick them for someone and get a smile in return. There starts to be more color added to our earth, more for the eyes to see. Summer is when we can swim in the sun-sparkled water, cool off in the shade, come together with everyone, walk in the nature, see the animals come out and play in the sun with us, hot days when we can cool ourselves off with ice cream and popsicles. And in the fall the beautiful yellows, oranges, reds and greens all blossoming and blooming from trees almost seeming to touch the sky. Falling, dancing in the wind, representative maple leafs for our country, loving our earth, seeing its beauty evolve as we are evolving, engulfing such beauty beyond our imagination, bringing happiness to life and laughter to our world.KatlynPortageImagine DreamsWhat are dreams you may say,Well, dreams are a place you can think your way,Dreams are where you think open and wide,Dreams are a place you can lay back and hide,Dreams are a place where no body can see,Dreams are a place where I can just be me,Dreams are all different in their own special way, Dreams are a place where I can have fun all day, and dream.Kalina, Grade 7QMSIf I couldIf I could fly, I would soar the skies,If I could climb, I would climb high,If I could run, I would run high and far,If I could fight I still never would,And these are just some of the things I would do if I could.Id fly through clouds, up, down and around,Id climb over mountains, cliffs and to the ground,Id zip through fields and reach 104,And if I could Id do much more.Kalina, grade 7QMSFor the Love of It!Duke I had wanted a horse for a long time, so I will always remember Saturday, May 5, 2007 as the day Duke came to be mine. He is a beautiful Paint, light on his feet, cantering around the corral. The first thing I did is grab some hay in my hand and stuck it through the fence. He actually bent over and took it right out of my hand. I was very excited and ran to tell Mom.Every Sunday morning I ventured over to the fence again and tried to tempt Duke with another handful of fresh hay. While he was eating the hay he let me pet his nose. I just wanted to celebrate. That same night Mom let me decide if we should start working with him and I said yes. When we went out, Duke let Mom lead him and brush him and when it was going good I went in. He was so good while I brushed him. He turned his head and put it in my face. I think he appreciated all the attention. Once I was done grooming him, he let me lead him over to Dad, who was approximately four meters away.I think we are going to be great friends. We have a long time to become friends because he is only 10 months old. When he looks at me it makes me smile because he has “a kind eye” which is big and brown.Jamie, Grade 4BESThis year Im in fourth grade. And this year I have little buddies. I have 2. I love reading, playing and doing exercises with them. Sometimes they read to me. They are really good readers, and when we do searches, they can find almost everything. I enjoy having little buddies. Having little buddies is good for reading, learning and having fun.Samantha, Grade 4FESI love when I help people and I try very hard to make life easy. One of the things that I want to celebrate about is when me and my best friend Jenecca go and clean chalk boards all around the school, especially when a teacher is allergic to chalk dust. I think that, that is a great thing to celebrate!Abigail, Grade 5FESI would like to celebrate my dog, Timber. I play with her allot and she is very friendly. Every time I throw something that fits in her mouth, she goes and gets it.My dog is the oldest dog I know. She is fourteen years old. Timbers fur is black and gold with some white under her chin.I think Timber is the best dog ever!CurtisHMRVFamily & FriendsCelebrating Everyone and Everything! There are lots of people and things to celebrate in the world that we live in. I celebrate everyone - my family, that is always there for me, and the friends I have at church and school. My teachers, principal, secretary and bus drivers who get you to school safely or look out for you while you are there. I celebrate all my pets that greet me at the door when I get home. The ambulance people, who help sick or hurt people right away. Also the policemen who put bad people in jail accused of doing some not so nice things and doctors, nurses and dentists who do good things to help you. I celebrate God!The things I celebrate are: books (I read all the time), games, I play with my family, school where I learn and play with my friends, clothes that I love to shop for and wear, and knowing that not every 10 year old is as lucky as I am.Holly, Grade 4 BESCinquain PoetryFriendsAlways togetherTalk, laugh, playMakes me feel goodBuddiesJosiahBESI am celebrating my dad! My dad is a great man who has always been around for me when the going gets tough. He has encouraged me to achieve more and when I think that I cant do something he gets me back on my feet and leads me through it. My dad has lead me through my minor hockey years and has educated me on the game so I could improve. If it wasnt for dad then I wouldnt be going to the Canada Games hockey tryout. Without my dad I think my world would seem as a little fish in a HUGE pond! My dad will always be there for me and I can rely on him and he can rely on me. What we have is something special I hope everyone can experience.Patrick, Grade 7HMMSMy Caring Neighbourhood Tender ThoughtsThis year has been hard for my friend. She lost her Mom to cancer. So I made a nice card to let her know I was thinking of her. On the inside of the card, I told her if she needed a Mom to talk to, she could talk to mine. I hope it made her smile! HopeBESSharing Thoughts About Roots of EmpathyIn my Roots of Empathy class Nora and her mom came once a month and I really enjoyed it. Kids should all have Roots of Empathy because it is a fun preparation for when you grow up.We learned about putting a baby on their backs to sleep because healthy babies used to sometimes die from SIDS, which stands for “sudden infant death syndrome”. Babies could also die if someone shakes them because it could damage their brain. SO PLEASE NEVER SHAKE A BABY.Roots taught us about milestones in babies growth. We saw Baby Nora reach a lot of milestones like saying “Dada”, sitting up and reaching for toys. A thing to remember is that all babies take a lot of care, patience and love. The favourite thing I learned is that everyone is special at every age, every shape and every size. Everyone has the same kinds of feelings even if its not the same as you we need to respect each other. People may be different but they are still just as special as you are!Roots of Empathy was a very special opportunity for me and I wish to have it in my class again sometime.Allyson, Grade 3Hampton Elementary SchoolIm celebrating all the teachers in my school because they take good care of people at my school and every one has a special thing about them! And theyre all great at teachingA grade 4 student HRVS My Most Valuable LessonThe most important thing that I can tell you tonight is to remember where you came from. Each of you have served your time here and earned the title of a Husky. Weve seen a lot through the years. Four years ago, we showed up for high school, short and innocent, totally amazed that we could leave school grounds during lunch. Since then, the building has pretty much stayed the same, but the people inside have kept it interesting. Sure, there have been some crazy things happen at Hampton High. Who could forget the incidents involving our bathrooms and a certain phantom? But, we have also done lots of great things for the community too. Participating in community clean-ups, supporting Amnesty International, entertaining people with our drama and music, bringing excitement with our athletic talent, researching military history, and trying to increase awareness of the consequences drunk driving the list of things that we have accomplished over our years here goes on and on. We have given a lot to the community and it has been just as kind to us. We live in a beautiful area full of nice people; it is hard to imagine a better place to call home. When you remember where you have come from dont forget the people who were there. Over the past 18 or so years our parents and teachers have prepared us for this period of change. Teachers, who over the past thirteen years have been everything from foes to friends, have prepared us academically. They worked hard to try and make learning exciting and fun. They have given us the tools to succeed in whatever we pursue after our public education has ended. Family has taught us what is not covered in school. Whether it is dad teaching you how to use the big boy potty, or mom showing you how to be a good friend, they have been there to support us and show us the way. The people in our early years have shaped us and left a lasting impression on us, and I want to thank them for their hard work.An excerpt from a valedictorian speech, 2009Brandon, Valedictory AddressHHSWhat is right with the worldThe natural beauty all around us is what is right with the world. The things that we take for granted are the sunrise at 5 am., the dew on the grass after a cold night, the reflection of the moon beating down on top of a lake or pond, and the beautiful sounds the birds make at dawn. So many of these things we take for granted but if we let ourselves see all the beauty around us we will realize that the things that cost nothing are truly the most beautiful. KatelynPortageWhat Really CountsWhat Celebrate whats right with the world means to meYou must remember you have to understand yourself before you understand what you do. Always get the most out of what you do because you never know where it will take you if you keep at it. You must remember to look at the positive side of things, even when the
