US television yesterday and todayA demonstration of television was held at the New York Worlds Failin 1939, and during the)1940s networks were established and television sets began to be sold. But, for a while, radio still had complete control of the entertainment industryIt was in the 1950s that television started to take the place of radio in the United States, and in the early 1960s over 750TV stations were telecasting to about 52 million sets with the result that the American TV audience included almost every familyToday there are more than a thousand stations all over the country, and in many places there is a choice of dozens of channels, not counting in the cable programs one can buy. For most of US television history, the Big Three of the Networksthe National Broadcasting Company(NBC), the Columbia Broadcasting System(CBS), and the American Broadcasting Company(ABC) -dominated US television, controlling up to 99 of television broadcasting No Viable“fourth network”would become competitive with the Big Three until the FOX Network was founded in 1986. Up to now, more than 20 nationwide broadcasting networks exist and the “Big Three” control 0nly a(relatively)small portion of the market With broadcast competitors Such as FOX, The WB(Warner Brothers), and UPN(United Paramount Network),satellite and cable companies, the Big Threes market share has dwindled considerably What 1s generally known as“cable TV”is actually a system of“community antenna television(CATV)”Cablevision, transmitted via direct cables connected to each television set, Offers Viewers a 1arge choice of programs,as well as excellent reception There is also pay TV,known as toll TV or subscription TV,which differs from cable TV in two important respects Pay TV entirely originates its own programs and charges a fee for Viewing each program(known as pay-per-view)Nearly all TV in the US is commercial。 SO programs are interrupted every fifteen minutes or So for advertisementThere is,however, one Channel Where there are no commercial breaks Programs on this channel are run by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)It has a loose organizationIts production facilities are not jointly organized and its revenue is uncertain. It receives a certain amount of money from the Congress, and there rest from foundation, public contributions, and individual stations2. Typical TV Programming The local stations show a few programs they produce them selves, but the majority of what they telecast is network programs The following is a broad, general guide to local commercial TV programming:69 am informational programs(news, interviews, panel discussions of issues,etc)9noon game showsnoon1 pm news14 pm soap operas(continuing drama serials emphasizing romantic problems), Sports,etc67 pm news7:3010 pm Situation comedies(Sitcoms), dramatical and musical programs, TV serials, movies, sports, etc(This portion of the Viewing time is known as“Prime Time”n has the largest number of viewers, and an advertiser pays higher rates for commercial“me during this period)11:30 p.m. movies, interviews, etc(In large cities,TV stations will broadcast programs 24 hours a dayIn the mediumsized and small cities, programs willl be broadcast from approximately 6 am until 2 am)3. The generation gapThe term is used to mean differences in ideas, life Styles and attitudes between older and younger people, differences which result in a lack Of understanding between them and frequently lead to confrontationsThe “generation gap” is one of the most widely discussed and controversial problems of recent yearsSome doubt Whether such a “gap” existsThey dont believe the younger generation is set apart from the 01der generation by a wide gap Many others, on the other hand, insist a gap between parents and Children is unavoidable and the generation gap today,if anything,is worse than it has ever been beforeThe reason they give is that the tremendous explosion Of knowledge in the twentieth century has made life for young people today so very different from life as it was When their parents were young.4. High divorce rate in US Divorce is a major problem in the US。At present,it is estimated, about one quarter to one third of a11AmeriCan marriages end in divorce. There is a great difference of opinion as to the causes of this high rate of divorce。But studies indicate that there are more cases of divorce among persons with low incomes and inadequate education and among those who marry at a very young age. Apart from 1egally divorced cases there are many separated couples. The immediate result that arises from the high divorce rate is an increasing number of Single parent homes, i.e., homes where children are being raised by only one parent. The breakup of a family affects the Children most. They fear being deserted or left alone. Many Children suffer from a feeling of guilt When their parents divorce. They think that perhaps some of their actions have caused the parentsseparation. Sometimes the Children become angry at both parents for changing their lives. Sometimes they may direct their anger at the parent who has 1eft or at the one who stays, who they think has forced the other away.Part II. Warm-up Activities:Step 1. Get stared by expressing a controversial opinion “A modern world without television is unimaginable”Step 2. Text Analysis: Main Ideas: (Summary Writing)Mr. Mayer, the author of this article is raising his voice against watching TV all the time in spite of the fact that there are many worthwhile programs: news, plays, movies, concerts, educational programs for children, programs on current social problems, and so on.In his opinion, many problems from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to forms of mental illness are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. He suggests that people turn off their TV sets for one hour each evening, which will make people understand each other better, and help families rediscover more active pastimes. Without the distraction of TV, a more literate new generation could be produced, and people could also have a wonderful time. Of course, the authors suggestion sounds reasonable but hard to be put into practice.Part Division of the TextPart1 (Lines1-3) The proposal of a quiet hour The author proposes that every evening, for 60 to 90 minutes, all television broadcasting in the U.S. be prohibited by law.Part2 (Lines4-28) Alternative activities and advantages The author mentions some problems caused by watching too much TV and suggests some activities to fill the time when turning off TV.Part3 (Lines29-42) Positive assessmentPeople could have more fun if they turned off TV for one or two hours every day as they did in the past.Part IV.
