There was a time when the necessary knowledge could be taught to the young by family members. But as societies became more complex and division of labor more common, it was impossible useful members of the society. As the need for specialists appeared, the job of teaching came into being in our country, and teaching as a job has been of increasing importance over the past one hundred years. Today, we have strict rules for teachers. We hope all children can go to school. Many things tell us that teaching is indeed an “important” job.In recent years, there has been an increasing need for teachers to be “responsible”. This means that the public expects teachers to succeed in teaching important information to the young. Teachers salaries today, while not much, certainly are much higher than they were in the past. These increase have come about because people have realized that without enough salaries, people who have abilities will not become teachers. Today almost no one says that “anybody will do” for a teacher. The public expects “ quality people” to teach the young, and progress is being made to give salaries that will make people who have abilities become teachers.1. Before the job of teaching came into being .A. family members had been responsible for the education of the young.B. Specialists had been in charge of beaching young people.C. Young people had to be self-educatedD. The society had played an important role in educating young people.2. The job of teaching came into being mainly because of .A. the development of the society.B. The explosion of information.C. The need for engineersD. The civilization of human beings.3. Teachers salaries are raised today in order to .A. show the importance of teaching as a job.B. Attract more qualified people to become teachers.C. Make teachers “responsible” in their teachingD. The main idea of the passage is that .A. greater progress has to be made in teachingB. enough salaries are necessary in making “quality people” become teachersC. it is important to be successful in teaching the youngD. teaching is a product of the societys division of labor . Short Answer Questions (20 points, 4 points each)Directions: In this section, there is a passage with 5 questions. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions briefly.Ever since I was a small girl, my family has been interested in the origins of our unusual surname. But in those days it was difficult to look into your family history, whereas these days there is much easier access to information. I got started on my project a few years ago, when I was given my late fathers birth certificate, which showed his parents names. I was delighted because before that I hadnt known anything about my grandparents. Since then Ive never looked back.First of all, I looked up a lot of information in the 1881 census for England and Wales. Censuses of the whole population have been taken every ten years since 1841, and provide invaluable information. I consult them quite frequently. Each one is kept confidential for 100 years, so recently there was great excitement about the release of the 1901 census. For the first time, this one was made available online, making it even more accessible. However, there were so many users that it kept on crashing, so they had to take it off again for 18 months while they were fixing it. Finally it was put back, and its very useful.Perhaps once a month or so I go to the national records office in London, and while Im there I consult not only the censuses but also the civil registers of births, marriages and deaths (which were first introduced in1837). I also call in at the county records offices in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire fairly often. Whenever I go there, I search the registers for records of baptisms, weddings and funerals, which have been kept by every church since the sixteenth century. The records offices hold other important documents too, such as wills, marriage licences and workhouse details. These all contain invaluable evidence about our countrys history. At the same time, during these trips, I can visit the places, towns and villages where my ancestors lived, and so can really start to imagine the lives they led.Family history isnt only about the past though. Ive discovered a whole new family alive today that I was previously unaware of. These are my fathers cousins, who emigrated to America, and their children and grandchildren. Not long ago I travelled to the USA to meet these newly-found relatives. We got on really well and now were very good friends and often speak to each other on the phone. Im
