The apparatus is given in IEC 60332-2-1. This standard gives the procedure for testing small optical fibre cables or a small insulated conductor or cable when the method specified in IEC 60332-1-2 is not suitable because some small optical fibre cables may break or small conductors may melt during the application of the flame. The recommended range of application is for the testing of small single insulated conductors or cables of less than 0,5 mmY cross-section. NOTE Since the use of insulated conductor or cable which retards flame propagation and complies with the recommended requirements of this standard is not sufficient by itself to prevent propagation of fire under all conditions of installation, it is recommended that wherever the risk of propagation is high, for example, in long vertical runs of bunches of cables, special installation precautions should also be taken. The requirements for the selection of cables for testing are given in annex A. The flame spread is measured as the extent of damage of the cable sample. This procedure may be used to demonstrate the cables ability to limit flame spread.This part of IEC 60332 covers category A and relates to cables installed on the test ladder to achieve a nominal total volume of non-metallic material of 7 l/m of test sample. The flame application time is 40 min. The method of mounting uses the front of the ladder, a standard or wide ladder being used for cables having a conductor cross-section greater than 35 mm according to the number of test pieces required, and a standard ladder for conductor cross-sections 35 mm and smaller. NOTE For the purpose of this standard, the term electric wire or cable covers all insulated metallic conductor cables used for the conveyance of energy or signals. The test is intended for type approval testing. The requirements for the selection of cables for testing are given in annex A. The flame spread is measured as the extent of damage of the cable sample. This procedure may be used to demonstrate the cables ability to limit flame spread. This part of IEC 60332 covers category D and relates only to small cables of overall diameter 12 mm or smaller installed on the test ladder to achieve a nominal total volume of non-metallic material of 0,5 l/m of test sample. The flame application time is 20 min. The method of mounting uses the front of the standard ladder in touching formation only. The category is intended for use with small cables where very low volumes of non-metallic material are required to be evaluated. It also provides guidance on the use of toxic potency data in hazard assessment and on principles which underlie the use of combustibility and toxicological information in hazard assessment.The methods described are applicable to data concerning both the incapacitating effects and the lethal effects of fire effluents.The structure of this technical specification remains essentially the same as the first edition but has been usefully expanded in all areas to further clarify
