Reading Comprehension 阅读理解本部分共四篇文章,20个问题,每题2分,共40分。(A) People express their personalities(个性) in their clothes, their cars, and their homes. Because we might choose certain foods to “tell” people some thing about us. Our diets can also be an expression of our personalities. For example, some people eat mainly high-class foods, such as caviar(鱼子酱) and lobster(龙虾) and they eat only in expensive restaurants (never in snack bars). They might want to show the world that they know about the “better things in life.” Human beings can eat many different kinds of food, but some people choose not to eat meat. Vegetarians often have more in common than just their diet. Their personalities might be similar too. For example, vegetarians in the United States and Canada may be creative people, and they might not enjoy competitive(竞争的) sports or jobs. They worry about the health of the world, and they are probably strongly opposed to war. Some people eat mostly fast food. One study shows that many fast-food eaters have a lot in common with one another, but they are very different from vegetarians. They are competitive and good at business. They are also usually in a hurry. Many fast-food eaters might not agree with this description of their personalities, but it is a common picture of them. Some people also believe that people of the same astrological sign(星座) have similar food personalities. Arians (born under the sign of Aries, between March 21 and April 19) usually like spicy food, with a lot of onions and pepper. People with the sign of Taurus (April 20to May 20) prefer healthful fruits and vegetables, but they often eat too much. Sagittarians (November 22 to December 21) like special foods from many different countries.根据上面文中内容,从每题下面的四个选择中选出一个最合适的答案,并在答题纸上把选的编号字母涂黑。21. So are you making the most of it? The secrets of a good nights sleep are a good mattress(床垫) and sensible eating habits. A heavy meal and too much wine will destroy a good nights sleep. Different people need different amounts of sleep. Men need on average seven to eight hours. Women need a little more. Sleep is a special state of the brain that is particularly active at certain stages. Sleep is generally divided into five stages. In the first two stages a person sinks into a light sleep, the muscles relax, breathing and pulse rate become regular. In the third and fourth stages of deep sleep, a sleeper can only be awakened by a loud or unusual noise. The heart beats slowly. Blood pressure sinks. This is the stage when the body regenerates. In stage five a person dreams. Dreams are an important part of healthy sleep. The brain is as active at this time as when a person is awake. A sleep must be long, deep and undisturbed to allow for physical regeneration in the deep stages of sleep. A comfortable bed and a slightly darkened room are important to a good nights sleep. The bed should be placed at least 16 centimeters away from the window. And the mattress should be wide and long enough for the sleepers out-stretched body. The ideal bedroom temperature is 16 to 18 degrees Centigrade. Any cooler and the body tenses rather than relaxes. A heavy meal before bedtime will lead to a sleepless night. If you feel hungry, eat a small snack with milk products.根据上面的文章内容,从每题下面四个选择中选出一个最合适的答案,并在答题纸上把选的编号字母涂黑。26. To have a good nights sleep, youd better _. Dont Sleep With a Full Stomach B. The Five Stages of Sleep C. Making the Most of Your Sleep D. Secrets for A Good Sleep(C) When I was a kid in Philadelphia, the reading game was very easy. But as I got older, my eyeballs must have slowed down. Books started to pile up faster than I could read them. It wasnt until much later, when I was getting my doctor degree; I realized it wasnt my eyeballs that were to blame. The problem is, there is too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of techniques you could learn to help you read faster. But I know of three that are especially good. 1. Preview - If Its Long and Hard Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine or newspaper articles, business reports, and nonfiction books. It can give you as much as half the comprehension in as little as one-tenth the time. Read the entire first two paragraphs of whatever youve chosen. Next read only the first sentence of each successive paragraph. Then read the entire last two paragraphs.2. Skim - If Its Short and Simple Skimming is also a good way to get a general idea of light reading-like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment(娱乐) sections of paper. Heres how to skim: Force your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each and every line of type. Pick up only a few key words in each line. Skim can give you a very good idea of this story in about half the words-and in less than half the time it would take to read every word. 3. Cluster - To Increase Speed and Comprehension Clustering trains you to look at groups words instead of one at a time-to increase your speed greatly. For most of us, clustering is a totally different way of seeing what we read. Train your eyes to see all the words in clusters of up to three or four words at a glance. Then reread the piece at your normal speed to see what you missed the first time. When you can read in clusters without missing much the first time, your speed has increases. So now you have three ways to help you read faster. Preview to cut down on unnecessary heavy reading. Skim to get a quick, general idea of light reading. And cluster to increase your speed and comprehension. 根据上面文章内容,从每题下面四个选择中选出一个最合适的答案,并在答题纸上把选的编号字母涂黑。31. What problem did the author meet with in reading?A. His eyeballs slowed down.B. According to the passage, the meaning of “reading clustering” is _.A. to read carefully word for wordB. to read a group of words at a timeC. to read the first sentence in each paragraphD. to read the first and the last paragraphs34. Previewing and skimming are familiar in some sense except that _. A. they can give readers a general idea of the contest fastB. they dont provide readers with the detailsC. they are good techniques for both light and heavy readingD. neither of them can promise more than half comprehension35. What does the author mainly talk in this passage?A. Reading Programs B. Reading GamesC. How to Read Faster D. How to Read Effectively (D) On-the-job smoking is a hot issue for both smokers and never-smokers, and many managers now see smoking as a productivity(生产率)problem. Although some people question whether smoking really affects ones productivity, it has, in fact, been proven that a smoker costs a company more than a nonsmoker. According to Professor William Weis, a “smoking employee costs his or her employer about $5,740 more a year than a never-smoker”. These costs include medical care, lost earnings and insurance. And absence due to smoking breaks is but one of the productivity problems, yet it accounts for a great deal of employer costs. When discussing the issue of smoking at the workplace, perhaps the most important problem is the health risk that smoking causes to both smokers and never-smokers. It has long been proven that smoking is linked to lung cancer. Now many health experts warn that passive smoking can cause lung cancer and other illnesses in healthy never-smokers. Passive smoking can be defined as exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke in enclosed areas. Anyone who has been with smokers indeed knows their smoke can cause eye irritation (刺激),coughing, headaches and throat soreness. While eye irritation may seem a small thing to smokers, it nonetheless is a problem that occurs every workday in offices and break rooms and can , eventually, lead to greater health problems. Employees who do not smoke should not be subjected to the risks of passive smoking and need to be able to work in a safe environment. Surgeon General Koop states that “the right of the smoker stops at the point where his or her smoking increases the disease risk of those occupying the same environment.”根据上面文章内容,从每题下面四个选择中选出一个最合适的答案,并在答题纸上把选的编号字母涂黑。36.
