汉译英原文:Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations. Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to woman. Handsome male executives were perceived as having mire integrity than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to account for their success. Attractive female executives were perceived to have less integrity than unattractive ones; their success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck. All unattractive women executives were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than was that of attractive overnight successes. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is perceived to be more feminine and an attractive man more masculine than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine position appears to lack the “masculine” qualities required. 译文:人们似乎总是愿意去赞许美貌。貌似每个人都会这么想:漂亮的人就是更快乐,更健康,婚姻更美满,连工作也比别人体面。私人顾问在求职上总是给他们更好的建议,甚至面对漂亮的嫌犯,法官都愿意网开一面。然而在管理层,美貌却成了一种负担。对很多男士来说,帅气的相貌会有助于他们在管理上节节高升,但对于女性而言,美貌却是有百害而无一利。看着潇洒的男经理,人们往往觉得他比相貌平平的人更加正直可靠,他成功来自于天才加汗水。瞧着漂亮的女经理,比起那些相貌普通的女经理,人们倒觉得漂亮的就不那么正直了。她的成功,靠得全是运气。比起漂亮的女经理,不漂亮的更显得正直和有能力。有趣的是,那些不漂亮的女经理的晋升,比起漂亮女经理的一夜成名式的成功,更多是通过私交而非个人才能。到底是为什么?大家认为女人有脸蛋儿就一定没能力?相对而言,漂亮的女人显得更具女性化气质,帅气的男人则更具男子气概。由此,在传统女性角色上,漂亮的女人显得更具优势;而在传统意义上一直被当作男性化的职位前,她们就显得缺了些“阳刚之气”。 政界也存在这种情况。在发表了一项关于相貌对政界竞选人的影响调查后,安妮.伯曼说道:“如果拿相貌作为唯一评判标准,人们的看法也是男女有别的。”调查
