I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cook book and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough (生面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldnt have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in out rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the living thing was and why it was there. I dont know who was more embarrassed (尴尬) by the whole thingDoug or me.61. Its shape.D. Its smell.65. However, you may find that your gestures happen out of habit. Understanding gestures of the country you are visiting may prevent you from communicating the wrong message. In North America, eye contact (接触) communicates to the speaker that youre interested and listening. In Asia, people look away to concentrate on what the speaker is saying. Taking the time to familiarize yourself with the gestures of the country you are visiting will help you connect with the people of the foreign environment, Lydia Ramsey writes in “Manners That Sell”.Gestures in BrazilMuck like the Italian culture, a Brazilian snaps his fingers (打响指) and uses exaggerated (夸张的) hand movements when emphasizing a statement. The sense of warmth and friendliness with each other is shown through the gesture of eye contact when communicating and standing close together in lineups or when talking to each other. Communicating a greeting is more than the gesture of a handshake, but also involves the touch of the forearm, according to the Nonverbal Communication Web Projects Charlene Wu.Gestures in ChinaChina is influenced by Confucius way of thinking, which is reflected through its culture. You communicate a greeting in China with the gesture of a slight nod and bow. To communicate respect, you keep your head lowered. In china, the gesture of standing close during a conversation prevents having to communicate with a raised voice. A person will communicate her surprise during a conversation with the gesture of breathing in air loudly, rather than a loud outburst.Gestures in RussiaGestures considered common to Americans may be considered rude in Russia. The American gesture to communicate “okay”, with the forefinger and thumb touching and three fingers up, is considered rude in Russia. Looking at your watch is a rude gesture communicating impatience. Russians also feel upset about the gesture of communicating direction by pointing.Gestures in IndiaGestures used in India are representative (有代表性的) of its traditional culture. In India, the gesture of holding out the hand to communicate giving or receiving must be done with the right hand as a person in India uses her left hand for washing. The gesture of communicating respect at a religious ceremony is done by removing your shoes. The proper way of communicating direction is to use either the whole hand or by using your chin (下巴). The proper form of communicating a greeting is to press the palms together with fingers upward and say, “Namaste”.66. The underlined word “familiarize” probably means _.A. Make someone understandB. Look like somebodyC. Get interested in somethingD. Become a member of a family68. In China people stand close while talking simply to _.A. express their respectB. show their surpriseC. avoid making a loud voiceD. communicate a greeting69. In India, a proper way of greeting is _.A. touching the forearmB. keeping your head loweredC. shaking hands with the left handD. pressing the palms together upward70. In which country is looking at your watch when talking to others considered rude?A. BrazilB. RussiaC. IndiaD. ChinaC One person can make a difference. Just ask Ryan Hreljac (pronounced hurl-jack), who is 15 and lives in Canada. Without his help, hundreds of wells might never have been built to provide fresh water for people in Africa, Central America, and India. Ryan travels the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries.“Everybody can do something,” Ryan says. Sometimes African-born Jimmy Akana-who is like a brother to Ryan- travels with him to explain how water changed his life. The story of the two boys is the subject of a new childrens book, Ryan and Jimmy and the Well in Africa That Brought Them Together, written by Herb Shoveller and published by Kids Can Press.Ryans efforts didnt begin in a far-off place, but right at home in Kemptville, Ontario. When he was 6 years old, Ryan learned from his teacher that children in Africa often must walk miles each day to find water. Some even die from drinking bad water, his teacher says. So Ryan decided to act. He did chores (杂务) for his parents, Susan and Mark, and for neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread, and donations (捐赠) began coming in. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $2,000, enough to dig one well. An organization called Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR)chose a location for the well in the village of Agweo, in Uganda ( in central eastern Africa). After the first well, “the ripple (涟漪) effect took over,” Ryan says, “and one goal led to another.” With adult help, he founded Ryans Well Foundation four years ago to educate people about the vital importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $ 1.5 billiom and built 255 wells that serve more than 427,000 people in 12 countries. Its website (www.ryanswell.ca) lists some of the famous people Ryan has met and the awards he has received, such as the Order of Ontario, the provinces highest honor. But Ryan isnt bragging (炫耀). “The most impressive people Ive met are the other kids who want to help, too,” he says. “The only reason I accept awards is that each word I say when I get one might help one more person.”Asked if he ever feels discouraged that many people still lack good water, Ryan says, “Its important to keep on. When people are dying on t
