He was Prince Henry of Portugal, the younger son of the Portuguese king and an English princess.Prince Henry lived in the fifteenth century. As a boy he became devoted to the sea, and he dedicated himself to improving the design of ships and the methods of sailing them. In 1416, when he was twenty-two, Henry founded a school for mariners(海员), to which he invited everyone who could help himJewish astronomers (天文学家), Italian and Spanish sailors, and Arab mathematicians and map makers who knew how to use the crude (粗糙的) compass (罗盘) of the day and could improve it. Henrys goal was to design and equip vessels (船) that would be capable of making long ocean voyages without having to keep close to the shore. The caravel, which he helped design, carried more sails and was longer and slimmer than any ship then made, yet was tough enough to stand up against gales(大风) at sea. He also developed the carrack(西班牙大帆船), which was a slower ship, but one that was capable of carrying more cargo(货物).The world owes credit to Prince Henry for the development of craft that made oceanic exploration possible. He lives in history as Henry the Navigator.11. Henry the Navigator was a member of the royal family of _. A. EnglandB. SpainC. ItalyD. Portugal12. It is worthwhile to consider, therefore, what are the causes of stress in our life, and whether we can do anything about them. Are we under-employed, or overburdened with too many responsibilities? Do we have a right balance of work and leisure (闲暇) in our lives? Are our relationships with family, friends or fellow workers all they should be? All these things can be a cause of stress, and it is best to face them honestly, and to bring our frustrations (失意) into the open. People who have a good row and then forget it are doing their health more good than those who bottle up their feelings. If our self-examination has brought any causes of stress to light, let us consider what we can do about them. It is possible to change jobs. We can make more leisure and fill it more happily, if we will accept a different living standard. We can improve our personal relationships by a different attitude. It is we who allow other people to make ourselves unhappy. Often the little things that disturb us are not worth an hours anger. The teaching in the Bible “Let not the sun go down upon your wrath (愤怒)” is good advice from the health point of view as well as the religious.16. Which of the following statements is true? A. Freedom from responsibilities helps relieve stress. B. Stress is the direct cause of cancer. C. The causes of stress are worthy of serious study. D. Cancer is the number one killer in our society today.17. According to the passage, which of the following types of people are more likely to suffer from stress? A. People who have cancer.B. Which of the following is not mentioned as a way to reduce our stress?A. Changing our jobs.B. Changing our attitude about little things that make us unhappy.C. Speaking out about our frustrations.D. Dont get angry easily about little things. D. Dont watch the sun set while you are angry.Passage 3A strict vegetarian is a person who never in his life eats anything from animals. The main objection to vegetarianism(食素主义) is the difficulty of getting enough protein the body-building element in food. If you have ever been without meat or other animal foods for some days or weeks you will have noticed that you tend to get physically rather weak.Proteins are built up from approximately twenty food elements called “amino-acids”(氨基酸), which are found more abundantly in animal protein than in vegetable protein. This means you have to eat a great deal more vegetable than animal food in order to get enough of these amino-acids. A great deal of the vegetable food goes to waste in this process and there is not much to be said in favor of life-long vegetarianism. The economic side of the question, though, must be considered. Vegetable food is much cheaper than animal food. However, since only a small amount of the vegetable protein is useful for body-building purposes, a consistent vegetarian, if he is to gain the necessary 70 grams of protein a day, has to consume a greater bulk of food than his digestive organs (消化器官) can comfortably deal with. In fairness, though, it must be pointed out that vegetarians claim they need far less than 70 grams of protein a day.21. We feel weak when we go without meat and other animal products _. A. unless we take plenty of exerciseB. unless we are reducing our food intake C. because vegetables do not contain proteinD. because we do not get enough protein22. Proteins are built up from _. A. various fats and sugarsB. about twenty different amino-acids C. approximately twenty different foodsD. approximately twenty different vegetables23. According to the passage, life-long vegetarianism may not be good because _.A. it makes people very thinB. it results in the waste of a lot of foodC. the body must process too much wasteD. vitamin-deficiency(缺乏) diseases may result24. According to the passage, one thing in favor of vegetarianism is that _.A. vegetable food is cheaperB. it is good for the digestionC. animal food is less expensiveD. vegetable food is easier to digest25. The bodys daily need for protein is _.A.60 grams B.70 gramsC.80 grams D.90 gramsPassage 4 It is a matter of common observation that although incomes keep going up over the years, we never seem to become much better off! Prices are rising continuously. This condition is called one of inflation(通货膨胀); the money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. We have grown accustomed in recent years to higher and higher rates of inflation. What could be bought ten years ago for one dollar now costs well over two dollars. Present indications are thatthis rate of inflation is tending to rise rather than to fall. If in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices, one might think that inflation does not matter. But it does. When money is losing value, it lacks one of the qualities of a good money stability(稳定性) of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value; and it becomes an unsuitable standard of deferred(延期的) payments. Nobody wants to hold a wasting asset(资产), so people try to get rid of money as quickly as possible. Inflation therefore stimulates consumers spending and holds back saving.26. According to the passage, inflation is a situation in which _. A. money increases in its value B. money keeps losing its value C. it s always easy to find better paying jobs D. employment remains to be a problem.27. In the authors opinion, if incomes and prices rise together _. A. inflation is still a problem B. money will hold its value C. consumers will spend a lot of money buying articles D. there will be no market fluctuations(浮动)28. It is stated in the passage that over the years our incomes have been increasing and we _. A. become rich quickly B. are actually no better, if not worse, in our financial condition C. can afford to buy more of the things that we want D. dont care about inflation29. When money loses its value, _. A. it is no longer stable B. the quality of products will become lower C. products or articles will be much cheaper D. it is a good time to save more money for later use30.
