PresentationLesson 78 The last one? 【Text】After reading an article entitled Cigarette Smoking and Your Health I lit a cigarette to calm my nerves. I smoked with concentration and pleasure as I was sure that this would be my last cigarette. For a whole week I did not smoke at all and during this time, my wife suffered terribly. I had all the usual symptoms of someone giving up smoking: a bad temper and an enormous appetite. My friends kept on offering me cigarettes and cigars. They made no effort to hide their amusement whenever I produced a packet of sweets from my pocket. After seven days of this I went to a party. Everybody around me was smoking and I felt extremely uncomfortable. When my old friend Brian urged me to accept a cigarette, it was more than I could bear. I took one guiltily, lit it and smoked with satisfaction. My wife was delighted that things had returned to normal once more. Anyway, as Brian pointed out, it is the easiest thing in the world to give up smoking. He himself has done it lots of times!【New words and expressions】entitle v. The writer hasnt entitled his new book yet.The book was entitled The Sun Also Rises.call sb. sth. name sb. sth. calm v. I lost my nerve. nervous adj. 专心concentrate on doing sth. 集中精力做某事 concentrate on learning English suffer v. During this time, my wife suffered terribly. What is the patient suffering from? vt. 遭受(痛苦、损害等)The village suffered serious damage from the floods. Many people are suffering cold and hunger in that district.temper n. Since his illness, he always loses his temper. 胃口,食欲 appetite for sth. 关于的食欲 (appetite 表示的胃口仅对食物而言)I have good appetite for the ice cream. This book is not to my taste. produce v. 拿出 produce=take urge v. 力劝,怂恿 urge sb. to do sth. 怂恿某人做persuade sb. to do sth. 欣喜,高兴delight +人 让某人高兴 glad/happy/pleased 感到高兴的 Im glad/happy/pleased. glad 是一种客套的话 Glad to hear that. happy He is a happy man. pleased Im delighted. Lesson 79 By air 【Text】I used to travel by air a great deal when I was a boy. My parents used to live in South America and I used to fly there from Europe in the holidays. A flight attendant would take charge of me and I never had an unpleasant experience. I am used to traveling by air and only on one occasion have I ever felt frightened. After taking off, we were flying low over the city and slowly gaining height, when the plane suddenly turned round and flew back to the airport. While we were waiting to land, a flight attendant told us to keep calm and to get off the plane quietly as soon as it had touched down. Everybody on board was worried and we were curious to find out what had happened. Later we learnt that there was a very important person on board. The police had been told that a bomb had been planted on the plane. After we had landed, the plane was searched thoroughly. Fortunately, nothing was found and five hours later we were able to take off again.【New words and expressions】(6)parent n. They planted grass seed on the desolate hills. vt. A bomb was planted on the plane. On that day many policemen were planted along the main street.Lesson 80 The Crystal Palace【Text】Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteenth century was the Crystal Palace, which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world, for it was made of iron and glass. It was one of the biggest buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries came to see it. A great many goods were sent to the exhibition from various parts of the world. There was also a great deal of machinery on display. The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyths steam hammer. Though in those days, traveling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe. On arriving in England, they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train. There were six million visitors in all, and the profits from the exhibition were used to build museums and colleges. Later, the Crystal Palace was moved to South London. It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world until it was burnt down in 1936.【New words and expressions】(10)palace n. Stores havent made as much profit as usual this year. The profits from the exhibition were used to build museums and colleges. vi. I have profited much from your advice/this book/ living abroad.三. homeworkclear adj. conscience n. wallet n. savings n. villager n. per cent unload v. wooden adj. extremely adv. occur v. astonish v. pile n. woollen n. goods n. discover v. admit v. confine v. normal adj. thirsty adj. ghost n. haunt v. block v. furniture n. whisky n. suggest v. shake v. accept v. pull v. cotton wool collect v. collection n. nod v. meanwhile adv. tired adj. real adj. owner n. spring n mattress n. gust n. sweep v. courtyard n. smash v. miraculously adv. unhurt adj. glance v. promptly adv. ride n. excursion n. conductor n. view n. reward n. virtue n. diet n. forbid v. hurriedly adv. embarrass v. guiltily adv. strict adj. reward v. occasionally adv. temporarily adv. inch n. space n. actually adv. hot adj. fireman n. cause v. examine v. accidentally adv. remains n. wi
