The finding of Loulan brought about new and unexpected fame for the ancient history of the Central Asia and thus began the exploration of the Taklamakan Desert. The City of Loulan is known both in China and throughout the world as the Middle Kingdoms “Pompeii” in the desert and one of the cradles of the civilization. It wasnt hard to imagine how excited Sven Hedin must have been when he was awarded the Victoria Medal by the Royal Geography Association. From that point forward, the mysterious covering of Loulan was gradually lowered and was no more a silent unknown hero but became an immediate worldwide sensation(引起轰动的事). Adventurers from America, Britain, Japan and Sweden, including Huntington, Stein, Otani Kozui and Bergman set foot here for several times. In the 1930s, Chinese archaeologist Huang Wenbi came here for the first time and made a survey of this area, which was found even then in terrible conditions due to uncontrolled digging with many wonderful cultural historic relics taken away to distant foreign lands. In 1979, a group of tombs called Sun Tombs, known for their unique and attractive burial forms, were unearthed in the Gumugou Graveyard, the public graveyard of the Lop Nur citizens in the Bronze Age. In early 1980s, in the Tiebanhe River Delta area of the lower reaches of the Peafowl River in Lop Nur, a female mummy dating back some 3,800 years was unearthed and was considered by the Japanese as the “Loulan Beauty”. This set off a wave of current exploration of the Silk Road. The archaeological unearthing being currently conducted in the Xiaohe(Small River) Graveyard is now the focus of the worlds most important academic event. The Xiaohe Graveyard, 175km west of the City of Loulan, is located in the lower reaches of the Peafowl River in the Lop Nur. When the Graveyard was found, it is said that there were some 1,000 coffins. It is large in scale with sand dunes(沙丘) as high as eight metres, on which about 140 wooden stakes(树桩) in various shapes were closely arranged. These burial customs are, to say the least, unusual.with the unearthed relics dated back to Chinas most ancient days.21Which of following statements shows the correct position of the City of Loulan? AIt lies in the Tiebanhe River Delta. BIt lies in the lower reaches of the Peafowl River. CIt lies south of the Gumugou Graveyard. DIt lies 175 km east of the Xiaohe Graveyard.22Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the word “Pompeii”? AA city as world famous as the Middle Kingdoms “Pompeii” BA buried city in the desert of great historical value. Ait was a Chinese archaeologist that first discovered the City of LoulanBit is of the greatest importance and value to be unearthing the Xiaohe Graveyard Cforeign adventurers did much damage to the exploration and relics of the City of Loulan Done after another important discovery about Loulan was made, causing worldwide sensationBYou put a great deal of effort into reaching the college of your choice. Its time to get started. But whats next? Beginning college can be an exciting but awkward time. Follow these tips to adjust to your new life rapidly and make the most of your college experience. To save time and money, use the colleges bus system. Taking the bus to school is quick, easy and free in most college towns. You wont have to locate or afford a place to park, either. Its also a good way to be environmentally aware.Save pennies on books by waiting until class starts. You might not even need all of the recommended books. New textbooks cost an arm and a leg. Try buying used textbooksits a sure fair way to save money and serves the purpose as well.Do never look at college life as an endless series of parties and social activities. But there is a whole lot more to college if youre serious about graduating. Having a good college experience is all about balancing work and fun.Be aware that your living environment can largely affect your academic success. If the dorm doesnt suit you, consider living at home with your family or renting your own apartment. The best location for your studies isnt always your dorm. Find a quiet area, like the library, to do your work. Alternatively, buy some headphones that block out noise.Be mindful of your diet. Make healthy food choices and watch what you eat. Avoid foods that are processed or high in sugar. The “freshman 15” is real. Many college students gain at least 15 pounds during their freshmen year. While electives(选修课) can be helpful when figuring out your major, you shouldnt entirely rely on them. Clubs and other organizations exist around. Get involved. Make sure, though, that you still have time to study. Having_too_much_on_your_plate can hurt your grades.24Which of the following ideas can be financially wise?ADriving your own car.BBuying used books.CRenting an apartment.DAttending activities.25In the text, freshmen are repeatedly warned against _.Aacademic failures Bphysical problemsCtraffic accidents Dsocial activities26The “freshman 15” tells the fact that some freshmen _.Aattend limited activities on campusBhave little regular physical exerciseCfocus less on their academic workDtake relaxed attitudes to their diets27The underlined phrase “Having too much on your plate” probably refers to _.Ausing too much money for mealsBeating too many unhealthy foodsCtaking part in too many afterclass activitiesDtaking an elective that has too many studentsCA huge cloud of dust rose and an overpass disappeared. This was the scene in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province on May 17.Nine people were killed and 16 injured.Things were similar last year in the Sichuan earthquake. Thousands of people were buried in the ruins and lost their lives. What if we could have warned them?People are always racking_their_brains to find a way of preventing buildings collapse. Better materials and technology help, but they are not a solution.Just like humans, a building has its own life cycle from “birth” to “death”. If we know when a building is going to collapse, we can repair it in advance or get out of it before it falls. Now, scientists at the University of Illinois have developed a material that turns red before it breaks. The invention could be used in things like climbing ropes or bridge supports. The research was led by Nancy Sottos, a professor at the universitys Beckman Institute, and Douglas Davis, a graduate research assistant. The secret behind the colorchanging material is a type of molecule (分子). A molecule is a group of atoms held together by chemical bonds. Imagine you and your friends standing in a circle, holding hands. Each person stands for one atom, your hands represent the bonds, and the entire circle represents a molecule. If one person lets go of his or her hands, the molecule changes color. The research team put the molecule into a soft material. When the researchers stretched the material, it turned bright red for a few seconds before it broke into two pieces. When they repeatedly stretched and relaxed the material, without breaking it, it only turned a little red.The major problem is that light can get rid of the red color. When the team shone bright light on the molecule, the broken bond was fixed, and the color disappeared. If the bright light keeps the red color from appearing, the materials warning system will be useless. Scientists still have a lot of work to do before the colorchanging molecules can be used outside the lab.28What does the passage mainly introduce?A. The collapse of an overpass in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province.B. The Sichuan earthquake.C. A material that turns red before it breaks.D. A way of preventing building from collapsing.29The underlined words “racking their brains” in the third paragraph mean _.A. suffering a lotB. collecting beyond imaginationC. losing a lotD. thinking very hard30Which of the following is a WRONG statement?A. Thousands of people died from the collapse of buildings in the Sichuan earthquake because they hadnt been warned.B. There is no building that will never collapse.C. A new material has been applied to buildings to warn people of collapse.D. A colorchanging material can turn red before it breaks.31What can we infer from the passage?A. The colorchanging molecules are certain to be used outside the lab.B. There will be no collapse with the help of the colorchanging material.C. There is a long way to go before the material can be applied.D. The problem caused by bright light will be solved by scientists.DMonitoring the mood of a pet dog could be used as an early warning sign that an elderly owner is struggling to cope, a new report has claimed.Researchers placed movement sensors(探测器) on dogs to track their behaviour and identified 17 distinct activities, including chewing, barking, sitting and digging. This allowed them to map the normal behaviour of a healthy, happy dog, which means any changes can be monitored and could indicate an issue with their owner.Nils Hammerla, part of the team from Newcastle University, said, “Humans and dogs have lived together in close relationships for thousands of years, which has led to strong emotional and social mutual bonds.”“A dogs physical and emotional dependence on their owner means that their wellbeing is likely to reflect that of their owner. Any changes such as the dog being walked less often, perhaps not being fed regularly, or simply demonstrating “unhappy” behaviour could be an early indicator for families that an older relative needs help. This is the first system of its kind which allows us to remotely monitor a dogs behaviour in its natural setting.”The team of academics, who presented their findings at the 2013 UbiComp conference in Zurich, created a hitech, waterproof(防水的) dog collar for the study.Dr Cas Ladha, who led the study, said:“A lot of our research is focused on developing intelligent systems that can help older people to live independently for longer. But developing a system that reassures family and carers that an older relative is well without intruding on (侵犯) the individuals privacy is difficult. This is just the first step but the idea behind this research is that it would allow us to support people without the need for cameras.”A range of dogs was used for the study, as the team needed to map distinct behaviours that correlated between different breeds.32From the text, we know that Nils Hammerla_.Aled the study and identified 17 activities of dogsBthinks some activities of dogs can reflect senior owners healthCstudied the relationship between humans and animalsDdeveloped a hitech, waterproof dog collar33The underlined word “reassures” in Paragraph 7 probably means_.Aprotect BcomfortCwarn Drecognize34Which of the following is an advantage of the intelligent system mentioned in the text?AIt can indicate that people arent well.BIt can identify different activities of dogs.CIt monitors an elderly owner without disturbing his privacy.DIt lets people see the dogs behavior clearly.35Which of the following could be the best title for the text?ADogs mood can be an indicator of owners healthBStrong bonds between dogs and their senior ownersCSigns that your older relative needs helpDA special way of taking care of the old第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。People who are confident really seem to be naturally outstanding and just seem to do everything with more styles than others. _36_ It is a habit that everyone can develop in life.
