Then they began to develop the Solar Roadway. The Solar Roadway is an intelligent road that provides clean renewable energy using power from the sun while providing safer driving conditions, along with power and data delivery. They predict that the Solar Roadway will pay for itself through the generation of electricity along with other forms of income and that the same money that is being used to build and resurface current roads can be used to build the Solar Roadways. Each Solar Road Panel measures roughly 4 meters by 4 meters and contains a microprocessor (微处理器) that monitors and controls the panel, while communicating with neighboring panels and the vehicles traveling overhead. The inventors suggest that this provides a communications device every 4 meters on every road which could be used for example to warn drivers of cars which are moving across a centre line and various other speed control problems. The top of the Solar Road panels is made of super-strong glass that would offer vehicles the tractions (抓地力) they need. According to the inventors, the Solar Roadway creates and carries clean renewable electricity and therefore electric vehicles can be recharged at any conveniently located rest stop, or at any business that has paved Solar Road Panels in their parking lots. The inventors say their Solar Roadway has many functions and advantages from main roads to driveways, parking lots, bike paths, sidewalks and runways. The Federal Highway Administration has given Brusaw $100,000 to develop the invention and Brusaw hopes to build a smart-road parking lot in the coming spring . 24. In the inventors opinion, the Solar Roadway _. A. is too expensive to build at present B. will bring them a large sum of money C. can provide as many data as present computers D. costs no more money than current roads25. A. the Solar Roadway is not available for gas-powered cars B. $100,000 is only enough to build a smart-road parking lot C. the Solar Roadway has already been put into use D. future electric vehicles can be charged anytime and anywhere27. What can be the best title for the text? A. The influence the Solar Roadway has on people B. The great changes on the roadway C. Solar-powered smart road of the future D. The Solar Road a much faster roadC Ask most people how they define the American Dream and chances are theyll say, “Success.” The dream of individual opportunity has been home in American since Europeans discovered a “new world” in the Western Hemisphere. Early immigrants like Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur praised highly the freedom and opportunity to be found in this new land. His glowing descriptions of a classless society where anyone could attain success through honesty and hard work fired the imaginations of many European readers: in Letters from an American Farmer (1782) he wrote. “We are all excited at the spirit of an industry which is unfettered (无拘无束的) and unlimited, because each person works for himself We have no princes, for whom we toil (干苦力活),starve, and bleed: we are the most perfect society now existing in the world.” The promise of a land where “the rewards of a mans industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labor” drew poor immigrants from Europe and fueled national expansion into the western territories. We Americans have heard many illustrations of the American success stories. Theres Benjamin Franklin, the very model of the self-educated, self-made man, who rose from modest origins to become a well-known scientist, philosopher, and statesman. In the nineteenth century, Horatio Alger, a writer of fiction for young boys, became Americans best-selling author with rags-to-riches tales. The conception of success haunts us: we spend million every year reading about the rich and famous, learning how to “make a fortune in real estate with no money down,” and “dressing for success.” The myth of success has even affected our personal relationships: today its as important to be “successful” in marriage or parenthoods as it is to come out on top in business. But dreams easily turn into nightmares. Every American who hopes to “make it” also knows the fear of failure, because the myth of success inevitably implies comparison between the haves and the have-nots, the stars and the anonymous crowd. Under pressure of the myth, we become indulged in status symbols: we try to live in the “right” neighborhoods, wear the “right” clothes, eat the “right” foods. These symbols of distinction assure us and others that we believe strongly in the fundamental equality of all, yet work as hard as we can to separate ourselves from our fellow citizens. 28. What is the essence of the American Dream according to Crevecoeur? A. People can fully enjoy individual freedom. B. People who are honest and work hard can succeed. C. People are free from exploitation and oppression. D. People are free to develop their power of imagination. 29. By saying “the rewards of a mans industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labor” (Para. 1), the author means _. A. laborious work ensures the growth of an industry B. a companys success depends on its employees effort C. the more hard-working one is, the bigger his returns D. a mans business should be developed step by step30. The characters described in Horatio Algers novels are people who _. A. succeed in real estate investment B. became wealthy after starting life very poor C. earned enormous fortunes by chance D. became famous despite their modest origins 31. What is the contradiction of American culture according to the author? A. The American road to success is full of nightmares. B. Status symbols are not a real indicator of a persons wealth. C. What Americans chase is not often consistent with their beliefs. D. The American Dream is nothing but an empty dream. DWhile residents of wealthy nations tend to have greater life satisfaction, new research shows that those living in poorer nations report having greater meaning in life. These findings, published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological science, suggest that meaning in life may be higher in poorer nations as a result of greater religiosity (笃信宗教). As countries become richer, religion becomes less central to peoples lives and they lose a sense of meaning in life.“Thus far, the wealth of nations has been almost always associated with longevity, health, happiness or life satisfaction,” explains psychological scientist Shigehiro Oishi of the University of Virginia. “Given that meaning in life is an important aspect of overall well-being, we wanted to look more carefully at differential patterns, correlates (相关物), and predictors for meaning in life.”Oishi and colleague Ed Diener of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign investigated life satisfaction, meaning, and well-being by examining data from the 2007 Gallup World Poll, a large-scale survey of over 140,000 participants from 132 countries. In addition to answering a basic life satisfaction question, participants were asked: “Do you feel your life has an important purpose or meaning?” and “Is religion an important part of your daily life?”The data revealed some unexpected trends:“Among Americans, those who are high in life satisfaction are also high in meaning in life,” says Oishi. “But when we looked at the societal level of analysis, we found a completely different pattern of the association between meaning in life and life satisfaction.”When looking across many countries, Oishi and Diener found that people in wealthier nations were more educated, had fewer children, and expressed more individualistic attitudes compared to those in poorer countries all factors that were associated with higher life satisfaction but a significantly lower sense of meaning in life.”The data suggest that religiosity may play an important role: Residents of wealthier nations, where religiosity is lower, reported less meaning in life and had higher suicide rates than poorer countries.According to the researchers, religion may provide meaning to life to the extent that it helps people to overcome personal difficulty and cope with the struggles of working to survive in poor economic conditions:“Religion plays a critical role in constructing meaning out of extreme hardship,” the researchers write.Oishi and Diener hope to reproduce these findings using more comprehensive measures of meaning and religiosity, and are interested in following countries over time to track whether economic prosperity gives rise to less religiosity and less meaning in life.32. Which of the following questions couldnt the participants have answered? A. Does your life have a purpose or meaning? B. Do you have relatives living abroad? C. Are you satisfied with your everyday life?D. Is religion involved in your daily life?33. Which of the following statements is true? A. Religion may provide meaning to life because people can get support from it. B. People in wealthier nations often express less individualistic attitudes. C. People with higher life satisfaction usually have lower sense of meaning in life. D. Wealthy people are more likely to commit suicide than poor people.34. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The poorer a country is, the more religious its people are. B. Economic prosperity gives rise to less religiosity and less meaning in life. C. If you want to find meaning in life, you must practice a religion. D. Meaning in life doesnt have much to do with the amount of wealth one possesses.35. The main purpose of the passage is to explain the possible reason why _. A. residents of poorer nations enjoy greater meaning in life B. greater life satisfaction leads to lower sense of meaning C. the poor people are more religious than the rich people D. residents of wealthy nations have greater life satisfaction第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Rabbits are easy to raise. The long-eared animals are clean and quiet. They do not need a lot of room. And you do not have to spend a lot of money to feed them. 36 One male and two females will produce in a year as many as fifty more rabbits. That is enough to provide a good supply of meat for a family. 37 Rabbit houses are easy to make with wood and wire fencing material. They do not have to be very big. But each rabbit must have its own little room in the house. This is very important. Each room should be about 75 centimeters wide, 60 centimeters high and one meter deep. Fencing is used for the sides and floor of the rabbit house. The holes in the wire fencing should be about one centimeter square. 38 This keeps the rabbit house clean and dry. Rabbits need a lot of fresh air and sunlight. Cover the sides of the rabbit house only to protect it from rain. 39 Feeding containers hung on the outside of the house let the rabbits eat whenever they want. They simply pull the grass and leaves through the holes in the wire fence. Each room should have fresh water. The water containers should be heavy so the r
