Reading should be active, not passive. When students first go to a library, they may be at a loss as to what to read of all the different subjects. Well, Bacon tells you to “look at weak places in your armour(盔甲 )”, and shows you how to fill up the blanks in your knowledge. On the other hand, it is no good just trying to fill your mind with knowledge. Knowledge in itself is often useless. A mind filled with too much knowledge is like a room too full of furniture; a man cannot walk about freely in it, and look out of the windows. It is much better to concentrate(专注于) on a few subjects which interest you and to deal lightly with the others than to march heavily through the whole range of learning, like a silly tourist going through a museum and not missing a single object. If you try to master every subject you may become very wise, but you will be very lonely and you will probably lose all your friends. So you must learn to pick and choose, and you must also learn to look here and there in a library like a camel (骆驼) eating grass on the grassland. If you watch it eating, you will see that although he is supposed to be one of the most stupid animals in the world, he has at least one of the qualities of the cultured man, the power to pick and choose. A student looking for mental food in a library should take the camel as his model. 56. The writer thinks that one must.A. read as many books as he can B. try to read books on all the different subjects C. only read books on subjects that interest him D. read and absorb a lot 57. A cultured man is similar to a camel because. A. neither of them is interested in knowledge B. the man reads books as much as a camel eats grass C. neither of them can be considered wise D. both of them have the ability to select58. The term “mental food” (last but one line) refers to. A. books B. grassland C. brain D. subjects59. In the second paragraph the writer mainly discusses. A. how to compare furniture with books B. how to select reading materials C. how to avoid missing anything interesting in the library D. why books must be absorbed 60. The writer thinks that it is to try to master every subject.A. necessary B. possible C. not good D. not interesting B We need never feel dull in the country. No matter how often we walk down the same road, over the same fields, or through the same woodland paths, there is always something new, something fresh to see. It may be a little plant that has come up since last we visited the place;a hedge that was just a lot of brown sticks may now be covered with flowers. We may find a birds nest deep in a bush, and if we are careful not to frighten the birds, as they pass, see first the little eggs, and then baby birds. We never know what we may see, or find when we start out for a country walk. But we must walk. We must learn to use our eyes, keep them wide open, or we shall pass by many a pretty or interesting plant, or miss the sight of some little wild animals, who see us well enough, and will keep perfectly still and quiet so that we should not notice him , until we are quiet out of sight. The wild children of the woods and fields are easily frightened, and if we want to get to know them, we must do as they do, and learn to be quiet and keep very still when watching them at work or play. All the year round, from the first warm breath of spring till the last icy wind of winter, we shall always find something to please and interest us in the country. 61. Which of the following statements is true? A. If were careful not to frighten the birds in a birds nest, we may see little eggs. B. If were careful not to frighten the birds in a birds nest, we may see baby birds. C. If were careful not to frighten the birds in a birds nest, we may first see eggs and then, big birds. D. None of the above statements is false. 62. We must keep our eyes wide open. A. in order to pass by interesting plants and see little wild animals B. so as not to miss the sight of pretty plants and little wild animals C. in order to pass by little wild animals and see the pretty plants D. so that we may pass by pretty plants as well as little wild animals63. What do little wild animals do when we go to them? A. They keep still and quiet. B. They are easily frightened. C. They keep still and quiet before they see us. D. They keep still and quiet till they are quite out of sight. 64. What must we do if we want to get to know the wild children of the woods and fields? A. We must be quite out of sight of them. B. We must make if possible to go towards them at work and play. C. We must do everything as they do. D. We must not frighten them. 65. D How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material online while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in U. S. For some parents the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as hazards and, with good guides, some education and a few precautions (预防措施), the wilds of the Internet can be safely marching on, “kids have to be online. If we tell our kids they cant surf on the Internet were cutting them off from their future.” said an expert. Most kids have started to learn to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe. But the most popular that was to limit access would be to use what is known as a “content screener (过滤器)”. But this cant be wholly reliable, and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know whats OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing (浏览) the Internet. A few other tips: Dont put the PC in a childs room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity. Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make
