Nitrocellulose Safety Data Sheet 1. PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION DOUBLE FIVE NITROCELLULOSE (damped with EA or IPA) 2. HAZARDOUS COMPONENT INFORMATION Chemical characterization: nitrocellulose (cellulose nitrate, nitrogen content: less than 12.6%) damped with at least 25% alcohol (ethanol, butanol or iso-propanol) Hazardous content: CAS-NO INDEX NUMBER HAZARD SYMBOL Nitrocellulose 9004-70-0 603-037-01-3 F Ethanol 64-17-5 603-002-00-5 F Iso-propanol 67-63-0 603-003-00-0 F n-butanol 71-36-3 603-004-00-6 Xn The damping agent used is noted on the package and the shipping documents. 3. HAZARDOUS IDENTIFICATION Emergency overview: warning Flammable solid Highly dangerous in dry state. When ignited, material burns rapidly with intense heat. May cause eye irritation. May cause skin irritation. Inhalation of dust, mist, or vapor may cause respiratory tract irritation. Inhalation of vapor may cause drowsiness and dizziness. Ingestion may cause sere throat, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Potential health effects: May cause liver damage if swallowed. Prolonged or repeated exposure may aggravate pre-existing kidney disease or liver disease. 4. FIRST AID PROCEDURES Eyes: remove contact lenses, hold eyelids apart. Immediately flush eyes with plenty of low-pressure water for at least 15 minuets get immediate medical attention. Skin: rinse thoroughly with water. Remove contaminated clothing. Thoroughly wash clothing before reuse. Get medical attention if irritation develops or persists. Inhalation: remove to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get immediate medical attention. Ingestion: if conscious, drink large quantities of water. Do not induce vomiting. Get immediate medical attention. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. 5. FIRE HAZARDS FIRE FIGHTING PROCRDURES: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus pressure-demand and full protective gear when fighting fires involving this product. Fight fires from a safe distance and use extreme caution when approaching fires. Do not attempt to fight advanced fires except for remote activation of installed fire extinguishing equipment. Use water to keep fire-exposed containers cool. EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Use water only if large volume is available. CONDITIONS TO AVOID: Avoid impact, friction, heat, shock, flame, and sparks or static charge. Do not allow material to dry, since it can be ignited and burn rapidly with intense heat. High heat on containers will cause vaporization of damping agent resulting in an increase in pressure, which may cause the release of drum lid. The burning of material may result in evolution of large volume of toxic fumes. Immediate medical attention is needed for anyone breathing fumes from burning product. Static charge may be generated while material is being poured from container. Refer to section 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE. Residue from empty containers will release flammable vapors that may explode and severe injury or death. Refer to section 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE. HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS: During combustion, the following substances may be formed: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, methane, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, and hydrogen cyanide. 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Avoid sources of ignition. Do not smoke. Ensure adequate ventilation or fresh air. Avoid contact with skin and eyes! Avoid inhaling vapors. Use suitable protective equipment/clothing as section 8: EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION. Tools used with nitrocellulose must be of nonferrous material such as copper, aluminum, brass or wood. Tools made of plastic material must not be used because of their tendency to produce static charge. Spilled nitrocellulose must be thoroughly wetted with plenty of water, swept up carefully and kept in tightly closed watertight container. For information concerning large spillage of nitrocellulose contact manufacturer. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE GENERAL MEASURES: Do not drop or slide container. Electrically bond and ground drum and equipment while emptying. Pour from original container onto a grounded metal chute and allow material to flow gently into vessel. Chute should be designed to allow placing the drum so the material can be removed from it, And position the operator 3-4 feet away from top opening of vessel to avoid flammable vapors. The chute should be open to avoid confinement and allow for ease in clean up. For empty, galvanized returnable drum, when residue from inside of drum to bottom of container. Leave an inch of water in drum bottom to guard against material becoming dry. Place cover and sealing ring on drum and tighten with nonsparking tools. For empty nonretumable painted drum, wipe with rag or cloth dampened with water. Place cover and sealing ring on drum and tighten with nonsparking tools. Rag or cloth should be placed in covered waste container, wetted with water, and disposed appropriately after use. Nonreturnable drums should be reconditioned and tested by an approved reconditioned before reuse, or disposed appropriately. Practice “First in/First out”(FIFO) inventory control. MATERIALS OR CONDITIONS TO AVOID: Avoid storing product near incompatible materials (e.g. strong alkaline and acid material, amines or oxidizing agents). Keep away from heat, flame, sparks and other ignition sources. Do not allow material to dry. Material can be ignited if dry, and will burn rapidly with intense heat. Do not cut, weld, drill, grind or puncture drum. Avoid exposure to heat. Rate of decomposes increases with increases temperature and time.8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION EXPOSURE CONTROLS: Check exposure limits given in national legislation for the damping agents. Refer to section 15. Concentration of damping agents in the workplace atmosphere should be controlled. PERSONAL HYGIENIC PRACTICES: Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid breathing dust, vapor or mist. Do not swallow. Wash thoroughly after handling, and before eating, drinking. Remove contaminated clothing promptly and clean thoroughly before reuse. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Chemical goggles or full face shield. Impervious gloves (neoprene is recommended). Nonflammable, antistatic protective clothing, antistatic protective shoes. ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Safety showers should be easily accessible. Provide adequate ventilation. Local exhaust ventilation may be necessary to maintain air contaminants below recommended exposure limits during the use of this product. During repair and maintenance, eliminate ignition sources and prevent build-up of static charges, completely isolate and thoroughly clean all equipment, piping, or tank before beginning maintenance or repairs.9.
