reporting tool that can help you effectively determine the number of computers on a network that are ready to run the Windows Vista operating system The data and analysis provided by the tool can significantly simplify the migration process This Getting Started Guide provides the information you need to install and use this solution accelerator In This Guide Installing the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Using the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard Using the Results Next Steps Note This Getting Started guide provides initial information for setting up and using the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment For additional information see the Solution Help which is available using the Help button in the wizard You can also access Help from the Start menu by pointing to All Programs pointing to Windows Vista Hardware Assessment and then clicking Solution Help Solution Accelerator Overview The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment provides two wizards The setup wizard installs the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment and the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard performs the Windows Vista readiness assessment Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Setup Wizard This wizard guides you through the process of installing the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment including the installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition which is a required component of installation Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard This wizard helps you inventory the computers on a network and assess their readiness for Windows Vista It stores the collected information in a database and generates reports to help you understand and use the results The documents generated by the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard include the following A Microsoft Excel workbook report that contains spreadsheets providing the detailed results of the inventory and assessment A Microsoft Word document summary that summarizes the results of the inventory and assessment including which computers are ready for Windows Vista and which computers do not meet minimum hardware requirements for Windows Vista but can be upgraded The document describes assessment data only for computers that already run a Microsoft Windows client operating system You can use these documents as the starting point for planning the migration of client computers to Windows Vista As a rule the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment will recommend upgrades for individual hardware devices that do not meet the minimum requirements for Windows Vista but it does not recommend upgrades to the CPU The Excel workbook will also provide detailed information about the availability of Windows Vista device drivers for each device found on the assessed computers Note The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard is designed to have the smallest possible impact on network performance and the performance of the computers being assessed You do not need to deploy any agents to perform the assessment The wizard uses technologies already existing in Windows computers The network impact during assessment is negligible The computers being inventoried will show a rise in CPU utilization of up to fifteen percent for fewer than 20 seconds Getting Started Guide5 Migration Process Overview You can use the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment as part of a comprehensive process for planning and migrating client computers to Windows Vista This process includes the following Hardware and device compatibility assessment Software compatibility assessment Business desktop deployment In addition to the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Microsoft provides other tools and support to help you with the deployment of Windows Vista The following table describes the primary tools and support available from Microsoft to facilitate effective and efficient completion of the primary steps of the planning and migration process Table 1 Windows Vista Assessment and Migration Process StepMicrosoft Tools and Support Assess hardware and device compatibility The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment solution identifies computers that have the system resources required to run Windows Vista It provides device compatibility information identifying the availability of Windows Vista drivers for each hardware device and where the appropriate hardware drivers are provided including The Windows Vista installation DVD Windows Update It also identifies drivers that are not available from Microsoft which require contacting the device manufacturer to research the availability of drivers for a device This Getting Started Guide covers the use of the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment to assess hardware and device compatibility Assess software compatibility The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment provides an overview of the applications installed on computers throughout the environment Use the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit Version ACT 5 0 to find out whether applications are compatible with Windows Vista ACT 5 0 can be used to centrally gather data assess and report Windows Vista software compatibility For more information about ACT 5 0 see the Next Steps section later in this guide Deploy business desktops After determining the hardware and software compatibility of your client computers you can use the Microsoft Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment BDD 2007 to plan and implement your Windows Vista migration project The Accelerator provides best practices comprehensive guidance and tools to optimally plan and deploy desktop computers running Windows Vista For more information about the BDD see the Next Steps section later in this guide About this Guide This Getting Started guide is part of a complete documentation set You should use all three documents provided with the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Documentation Roadmap Release Notes which provides information you should read before installing the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment including installation prerequisites and known issues Getting Started Guide6 Getting Started this document which provides detailed information for setting up the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment as well as initial information about how to use it Solution Help which provides detailed information about the solution and how to use it including all options available in the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard You can access Help by clicking the Help button in the wizard or from the Start menu by pointing to All Programs pointing to Windows Vista Hardware Assessment and then clicking Solution Help Installing the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Setup Wizard guides you through the process of installing the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment and setting up the database required to do a readiness assessment This includes Installation of the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Installation of SQL Server 2005 Express which is required to store the inventory and assessment data To ensure that SQL Server 2005 Express is available the wizard does the following The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Setup Wizard automatically downloads the required installation files and installs SQL Server 2005 Express If the SQL Server 2005 Express installation files have been previously downloaded you need to specify the location of the downloaded files so the wizard can use those installation files to install SQL Server 2005 Express Note The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment creates a non default instance of SQL Server 2005 Express If the setup wizard is run on a computer already running another instance of SQL Server 2005 Express then that instance is not affected by the installation of the additional instance required by the solution If you want to uninstall you can run the setup wizard again and it will provide you with options to uninstall the application the SQL Server 2005 instance and any reports that you have created Uninstalling the application can also be completed through the Add Remove Programs icon in Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Programs and Features icon in Windows Vista in the Control Panel If you choose this option you will need to uninstall the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment and SQL Server 2005 Express separately After installation is complete the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard is available from the Start menu For detailed installation and uninstallation instructions known issues and software prerequisites refer to the Release Notes file which is available for download with the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Setup Wizard Using the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard Assessing the readiness of computers on a network to run the Windows Vista operating system is simplified by the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard Running the wizard is easy and it provides the detailed information that you need to understand which computers are ready for Windows Vista and which computers will need hardware upgrades In This Section Readiness Assessment Process Readiness Assessment Prerequisites Running the Wizard Readiness Assessment Process The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard is able to centrally inventory and scan computers on the network that are running any of the following operating systems Getting Started Guide7 Windows Vista already migrated Windows XP Professional Windows XP Professional SP2 Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2003 R2 Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server Note User names and passwords entered into the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard are never stored on a hard disk They are encrypted in system memory while the inventory and assessment is being performed Every time the wizard is run you will need to reenter the inventory credentials The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard will give you the option to find computers using Active Directory Domain Services or the Computer Browser service Once found the computers are inventoried using Windows Management Instrumentation WMI Use the following recommendations to determine the options to choose when running the wizard If you have Active Directory select the option to find computers using Active Directory Domain Services The wizard cannot be constrained to scanning specific Active Directory organizational units OU It will scan all computers in all OUs in the domain specified On the Active Directory Inventory wizard page you can specify that information is to be collected from all related domains in the same forest If you want to find computers in the entire Active Directory forest select this checkbox If you are scanning an environment with multiple forests then you will need to run the wizard again and on the Active Directory Inventory wizard page provide credentials for a domain in that forest If you select the same inventory database when you run the wizard again then the inventory data will be added to the inventory data previously stored in the inventory database If you are scanning computers that are joined to a Microsoft Windows NT 4 0 domain then only select the option to find computers using the Windows networking protocols If your computers are in workgroups you should select the option to find computers using the Windows networking protocols You will need to run the wizard on each subnet in the organization to find all of the computers in workgroups This is required because the Computer Browser service does not work across routed connections If you want to scan only specific computers and you have a list of computer names to scan then do not select the options to find computers using Active Directory or the Windows networking protocols The wizard will take you directly to the Inventory Accounts wizard page where you can provide credentials to connect to the computer and the computer name to scan You can run the wizard again to find additional computers such as computers that may have been turned off when you previously ran the wizard The inventory and assessment results are cumulative No computers are removed but any new computers found will be added to the inventory results To keep all results together and create a single report and workbook covering an entire organization use the same database each time you run the wizard If you want to update the inventory results for a computer that has already been inventoried then you will need to create a new database and select the appropriate options to collect the inventory data again After collecting information about the computers on the network the wizard compares the hardware and devices of each computer against the Windows Vista system requirements and assesses the readiness of each computer for Windows Vista The readiness assessment includes determining the following for each computer If the computer is Windows Vista Ready This category includes any computer for which Windows Vista migration is recommended What the identified Windows Vista experience should be Windows Vista Capable A computer that is able to run Windows Vista but will most likely not be able to support Windows Vista Aero Windows Vista Premium Ready A computer that should run Windows Vista with high performance including support for Windows Vista Aero Getting Started Guide8 What hardware upgrades can be completed to improve the experience or make a computer Windows Vista Ready The assessment includes the specific hardware upgrades recommended for each computer The assessment does not recommend upgrading the CPU of a computer Not Windows Vista capable These computers should not run Windows Vista because the hardware does not meet the minimum system requirements If the CPU of the computer runs slower than 800 MHz then the wizard will recommend that the computer cannot be upgraded Important The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Wizard cannot definitively identify if a computer can take advantage of the new Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption feature nor can it definitively identify if the user interface can be configured in Aero Glass mode Windows Vista Aero Glass mode provides a refined user interface and spe
