Anyone who wanted to change something would get a list of signatures from people who agreed to the idea and either send them to the government or deliver them personally to the Prime Ministers house in London. They are always accepted at the door by one of the PMs officials. What happens then? Nothing much, usually. But petitions have always been thought of as a useful way for thowho govern to find out what the people really think.Thats why the U government launched its “e-petition” site in November 2006. Instead of physically collecting signatures, all anyone with an idea has to do now is to make a proposal on the government website, and anyone who supports the idea is free to add his or her signature. The petitions soon started to flow in. The idea was for the British people to express their constructive ideas. Many chose instead to express their sense of humor. One petitioner called on Tony Blair to “stop the Deputy Prime Minister eating so much”. Another wanted to expel(驱逐)Scotland from the United Kingdom because Scottish football fans never support England in the World Cup.Other petitioners called on the Prime Minister to abolish the monarchy. Some wanted to give it more power. Some wanted to oppose the United States. Others wanted to leave the European Union. Some wanted to send more troops to lraq and others wanted them all brought home. Some wanted to adopt the euro(欧元). Others wanted to keep the pound.Yet if some petitions are not serious, others present a direct challenge to government policy. A petition calling on the government to drop plans to charge drivers for using roads has already drawn around 1.8 million signatures. In response to that, a rival petition has been posted in support of road pricing. And that is also rapidly growing. There are about 60 million people in Britain, so it is understandable that the government wants to find out what people are thinking. But the problem with the e-petition site seems to be that the British people have about 70 million opinions, and want the Prime Minister to hear all of them. Perhaps he could start a petition asking everyone to just shut up for a while.16. A petition needs to be signed.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned17. The Prime Minister reads petitions every day.A. Form Buckingham Palace to Oxford, the UK is loaded with wonderful icons(标志)of past eras. But it has also modernized with confidence. Its now better known for vibrant(充满活力的)cities with great nightlife and attraction. Fashions, fine dining, clubbing, shopping-the UK is among the worlds best.2. Most people have strong preconceptions about the British. But if youre one of these people, youd be wise to abandon those ideas. Visit a nightclub in one of the big cities, a football match, or a good local pub and you might more readily describe the English people as humorous and hospitable. Its certainly true that no other country in the world has more bird-watchers, sports supporters, pet owners and gardeners than the UK.3. Getting around England is pretty easy. Budget(廉价的)airlines like Easyjet and Rynnair fly domestically. Trains can deliver you very efficiently from one major city to another. Long distance express buses are called coaches. Where coaches and buses run on the same route, coaches are more expensive(though quicker)than buses. Londons famous black cabs are excellent but expensive. Minicabs are cheaper competitors, wit freelance(个体的)drivers. But usually you need to give a call first. Londons underground is called the Tube. Its very convenient and can get you to almost any part of the city.4. The UK is not famous for its food. But you still need to know some of the traditional English foods. The most famous must be fish and chips. The fish and chips are deep fried in flour. English breakfast is something you need to try. It is fried bacon, sausages, fried eggs, black pudding, fried tomatoes, fried bread and baked beans, with toast and a pot of tea. Other things like shepherds pie and Yorkshire pudding are also well-known as a part of English food culture.5. Pubbing and clubbing are the main forms of English nightlife, especially for the young, Pubbing means going to a pub with friends, having drinks, and chatting. Clubbing is different from pubbing and includes going to a pub, or a place of music, or a bar, or any other places to gather with friends. Clubbing can be found everywhere. Usually there is some king of dress code for clubbing, such as no jeans, no sportswear, or smart clubwear, while pubbing is much more casual.23. Paragraph2_.24. Paragraph3_.25. Paragraph4_.26. Our memory tells us who we are. Our memory helps us to make use in the present of what we have learnt in the past.In fact we have different types of memory. For example, our visual memory helps us recall facts and places. Some people have such a strong visual memory, they can remember exactly what they have seen, for example, pages of a book, as a complete picture. Our verbal (言语的) memory helps us remember words and figures we may have heard but not seen or written: items of a shopping list, a chemical formula, dates, or a recipe. With our emotional (情感的) memory, we recall situations or places where we had strong feelings, perhaps of happiness or unhappiness. We also have special memories for smell, taste, touch and sound, and for performing physical movements. We have two ways of storing any of these memories. Our short-term memory stores items for up to thirty secondsenough to remember a telephone number while we dial. Our long-term memory, on the other hand, may store items for a lifetime .Older people in fact done only a few hours ago, but have the clearest remembrance(记忆) of when they have very young.Psychologists tell us that we only remember a few facts about our past, and that we invent the rest. It is as though we remember only the outline of a story. We then make up the details. We often do this in the way we want to remember them, usually so that we appear as the heroes of our own pastor maybe victims needing sympathy(同情).16. Visual memory helps us recall a place we have been to.A. RightB. Wrong C. Not mentioned17. Visual memory may be used when we read a story.A. RightB. Wrong C. Not mentioned18. Their computers have been connected so they can “talk” to each other. This may not seem very dramatic news, but it is the beginning of a development that will increase the power of the internet tremendously.2The internet is an interconnected (互联) system of networks that connects computers round the world and facilitates the transmission and exchange of information. The way that you use the internet is by accessing this network. This depends on the power that your system allows you to use. The power of your computer is responsible for how fast you can download(下载) files, how much data you can store, etc. If your computer is old and slow, accessing the information can be very difficult.3The new development in information technology has been called “the grid”(网络技术),and it will be a network of computers that are linked together. The “grid” will work in a different way from the internet, enabling you to get the power of the biggest computers in the world on your computer. Accessing the information will no longer depend on the power of your computer. The idea is that while you access information, you will also have access to the power of the bigger computer stations.4 One advantage of this revolutionary is that geographical location will become irrelevant. The “grid” will decide which are the best parts of a worldwide network to do the job you want. This means that you may be accessing a computer in Japan to solve a problem in Alaska.5 The “grid” can be compared to having an efficient personal assistant. You can give your assistant a task and “he” will do it for you. The assistant will do the preliminary research, collect the data, compare them and decide on the best course of action by accessing and of the computer centres in the “grid” that happen to have the relevant information. All you have to do is assign the task, sit back and wait.6 At present, possible applications of the “grid” in scientific research are being explored. While it has taken about fifteen years for internet use to become widespread, experts believe that the “grid” could be up and running for private individuals far more quickly. Scientists working on“grid”projects are convinced that it will be as widely user as the web in the next ten years.23Paragraph 2_ 24Paragraph 3_ 25Paragraph 4_ 26Paragraph 5_ 27 Traditionally the power of your computer determines how fast you can access_28 The “grid” will enable you to get on your computer the power of _ in the world.29 The “grid” would be like _, who can perform your tasks efficiently.30 It is believed that the widespread use of the “grid” will become possible in the next _.答案:23、二段_D_(目前互联网使用的局限性)(第二段的第3句)24、三段_A_(“网络技术” 如何工作?)(第三段的第1句和第2句)25、四段_E_(距离不是问题)(第四段的第1句)26、五段_C_(只是提出要求)(第五段的最后1句)27、选D。 第一篇 The Hyper-XThe Hyper-X(超音速飞机) recently broke the record for air-breathing jet planes when it traveled at a Hypersonic speed(超音速) of seven times the speed of sound.Thats about 5,000 miles per hour. At this speed, youd get around the world-flying along the equator(赤道) in less than 5 hours. The Hyper-X is an unmanned, experimental aircraft just 12 feet long. It achieves hypersonic speed using a special sort of engine known as a scramjet (超音速冲压式喷气发动机)。For an engine to burn fuel and produce energy, it needs oxygen. A jet engine, like those on passenger airplanes, gets oxygen from the air. A rocket engine typically goes faster but has to carry its own supply of oxygen. A scramjet engine goes as fast as a rocket, but it doesnt have to carry its own oxygen supply.A scramjets special design allows it to obtain oxygen from the air that flows through the engine. And it does so without letting the fast-moving air put out the combustion (燃烧) flames. However, a scramjet engine works properly
