Causes burns. Very toxic to aquatic organisms.Corrosive.Potential Health EffectsEye:May cause irreversible eye injury. Contact with liquid is corrosive to the eyes and causes severe burns.Skin:Contact with liquid is corrosive and causes severe burns and ulceration.Ingestion:May cause perforation of the digestive tract. Causes severe digestive tract burns with abdominal pain, vomiting, and possible death. May cause corrosion and permanent tissue destruction of the esophagus and digestive tract. May be harmful if swallowed.Inhalation:Inhalation of high concentrations may cause central nervous system effects characterized by nausea, headache, dizziness, unconsciousness and coma. May cause liver and kidney damage. Causes severe irritation of upper respiratory tract with coughing, burns, breathing difficulty, and possible coma. May cause pulmonary edema and severe respiratory disturbances. May cause kidney damage.Chronic:May cause liver and kidney damage.Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURESEyes: Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT allow victim to rub eyes or keep eyes closed. Extensive irrigation with water is required (at least 30 minutes).Skin:Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Destroy contaminated shoes.Ingestion:Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.Inhalation:Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.Notes to Physician:Chloroacetic acid causes competitive inhibition of acetate oxidation and acetylates sulfhydryl residues in the liver and kidney.Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURESGeneral Information:During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Use water spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool. Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to prevent contact with thermal decomposition products. Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated. Combustible material; may burn but does not ignite readily.Extinguishing Media:Water or foam may cause frothing. Use water spray to cool fire-exposed containers. Do NOT get water inside containers. For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or water spray. For large fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, alcohol-resistant foam, or water spray. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out.Section 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURESGeneral Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.Spills/Leaks:Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways.Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Remove all sources of ignition. Provide ventilation. Do not get water inside containers. Cover with dry earth, dry sand, or other non-combustible material followed with plastic sheet to minimize spreading and contact with water.Section 7 - HANDLING and STORAGEHandling:Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Minimize dust generation and accumulation. Keep container tightly closed. Do not get on skin or in eyes. Do not ingest or inhale. Discard contaminated shoes.Storage:Store in a tightly closed container. Keep from contact with oxidizing materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep away from metals. Keep away from reducing agents. Do not store in metal containers. Do not store near alkaline substances.Section 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTIONEngineering Controls:Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower.
