Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at bed and breakfast houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories. “We didnt stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.” I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought VACANCLES meant holidays, because the Spanish word for holidays” is vacacions. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said VACANCLES, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said NO VACANCLES, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels! We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word DIVERSION means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word DIVERSION on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hold. English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris. when someone offered me some more. coffee, I said Thank you in French. I meant that I would like some more, However , to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that Thank you in French means No, thank you.21. My Spanish friends wanted advice about _. A. learning English B. finding places to stay in England C. driving their car on English roads D. going to England by car22. I suggested that they stay at bed and breakfast houses because _. A. no free rooms B. free rooms C. not away on holiday D. holidays B When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasnt very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldnt catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish”, I remember being even more upset then because, “Im not a fish!” I didnt know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does? As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive (敏感的) to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish dont have any eyelids (眼皮) and the sun hurts their eyes. The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them. When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like sales people.” But it didnt completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.24. Why was the author upset in fishing trips when he was nine? A. His father did not teach him fishing. B. His father was not patient with him. C. He could not catch a fish. D. He could not influence a fish as his father did.25. What did the authors father really mean? A. To read about fish. B. Many of them are addicted to a screen either on a computer or a TVthey seem to be living in a virtual world. They have lost touch with nature. But now 400 organizations in the UK, from playgroups to the National Health Service, are encouraging children to have some“wild time”. They want kids to swap at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside. Activities such as building dens, climbing trees, and playing hide and seek are just some of the things kids can do. Even if they live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park. Children often need a helping hand from mum and dad. They need to be shown what to do and where to go. Andy Simpson from National Health Service says,“We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids development, independence and creativity, by giving wild time ago”. So despite the complicated world that young people grow up in now, it seems that going back to basics and experiencing“natures playground” is what modern children need. David Bond from Project Wild Thing says“We need to make more space for wild time in childrens daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted”. This might sound a bit old fashioned to you or maybe, like me, its made you think about sticking on your boots, getting outdoors and reliving your childhood. Theres no age limit on enjoying yourself!28. What is the best title of the text? A. Benefits of wild time B. Wild time for children C. More space for children D. Adventures of children29. D As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parentsefforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the childrens IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.” The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings (兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are its the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”32.The writers purpose in writing the text is to _. A. show the relationship between parents and children B. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table C. give information about family problems D. report on the findings of a study33.Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because _. The goal is to calm down and try to solve what is bothering you. This is hard for some kids and adults, too. Instead of calming down, some kids might keep getting more and more upset until they explode like a volcano! 37 Their anger might be so strong that they lose control of their temper. They may act in ways unacceptable and hurtful. People may say that someone has trouble controlling their temper. 38 Some kids might get so angry that they scream at their parents, break something, or even worse, hit their brothers or sisters. 39 However, its not OK for a kid to do any of those things. Kids dont want to act in this way, but sometimes angry feelings can be hard to manage. So what to do?Well, the good news is that kids dont just have to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. 40 Imagine your temper as a little dog inside you that needs some training. The little dog is not bad-it will probably turn out a great dog. It just needs to learn some rules because, right now, that little dog is causing some problems to you. A. You can train your temper.
