Unit 13 peopleCommunication WorkshopTeaching procedures1:Before you startExercise 1Read the Strategies with the class and ask students which of these strategies they use in English. The woman sitting in the back, the one in the black jacketwith her arms crossed, she looks a bit, er, kinds of shy.Boy: Yes, or maybe shes cold.Girl: Yes, perhaps the air-conditioning is on too low. What do youthink theyre doing?Boy: I think the man with the glasses could be a teacher and hesshowing his students something amusing on the laptop.Girl: Mmm, but why would the guy with the camera be filming? Hedoesnt look like a student!Boy: Youre right. He might be filming to make an advertisement forthe school.Stages 1-2Students work in pairs discussing the second photograph.Read through the stages and the example language for eachstage with the class so that students are clear about the activity.Students use the Key Words in the Warm-up and in Lesson 2to describe the people in the photograph. The pairs worktogether making notes about the people.Students take turns to comment about the photo, speculatingabout the situation and the people.TalkbackStudents form groups of four and exchange ideas about the photo.The groups then report back to the class and find out howmany different ideas they had.Writing: Describing a PersonBefore you startExercise 1Read the headings (a-c) with the class and have studentspredict the order of the topics in an essay.Students work individually, reading the description andmatching the headings and paragraphs.Answers1 b 2 a 3 cExercise 2Students work in pairs, reading the text and answering the questions.Check students answers and have them read out the sectionof the text which gives the important information.Answers1 Shes has got short, grey hair and clear brown eyes. She is quite short and a bit thin. She seldom wears make-up.2 She likes children and animals, especially dogs.3 Shes cheerful, generous and helpful.Stage 1Each student decides who to write about. Tell them it can be a person they know or someone famous.Stage 2Read through the notes with the whole class. Draw students attention to the layout of the diagram and the sub-headings for each topic.Refer students to Writing Help 1 for useful vocabulary for describing people.Students work individually making notes of a person they are going to write about.Stage 3Refer students back to the text about Alice to remind them of the content of the three paragraphs.Students write three paragraphs about their person, using the guidance on layout and linking in Writing Help 1.Stage 4Students check their writing for mistakes and refer to Writing Help 1 (checking). Students can also work in pairs helping each other with peer correction.TalkbackStudents work in groups of four or five, reading each others descriptions and discussing who would be the most interesting person to meet.Each group then reads the description of their mostinteresting person to the class.OpExtensionStudents prepare a short talk about one of their fellow students answeri
