With increasingly frequent translating activities in terms of global economy and culture, more and more common, scientific and appropriate translation theories or strategies are in dire need to guide the translation processing, especially in the realm of literary translation. As for such a situation, Nidas Functional Equivalence Theory came into our sight. The Functional Equivalence Theory advocates the closest natural equivalent of the source text, which tries to evoke from the target text readers a response close to what the original readers experienced. And gradually this theory was becoming dominant in the circle of translation theory and practice. In recent years, this theory has also become one of the main topics of Chinese translation theorists and accepted by many of them. However, his principle of Functional Equivalence has not only enjoyed great popularity but also suffered from severe criticism in both Chinese and western translation circles. Joyces use of stream of consciousness makes this novel a story of the development of Stephens mind. In the first chapter, the very young Stephen is only capable of describing his world in simple words and phrases.Once upon a time and a very good time it was there was a moocow coming down along the road and this moocow that was coming down along the road met a incense little boy named baby tuckoo.His father told him that story: his father looked at him through a glass: he had a hairy face. He was a baby tuckoo. The language is childish: “moocow”, “tuckoo”, and “nicens” are words a child might say, or words that an adult might say to a child. In addition to using childlike speech, Joyce tries to emulate a childs thought processes through the syntax of his sentences and paragraphs. He jumps from thought to thought with no apparent motivation or sense of time. We have no idea how much time goes by between Stephens father telling him the story and Stephen wetting the bed. Moreover, the way Stephens thoughts burn inward reflects the way children see themselves as the center of the universe. Stephen is the same Baby Tuckoo as the one in the story his father tells, and the song Stephen hears is “his song”. As Stephen ages, Joyces style becomes less childish, tracking and emulating the thoughts and feelings of the maturing Stephen as closely as possible. 3.1.2 Pitfalls of Religious Extremism若某级标题置于页尾,应调至下一页Brought up in a devout Catholic family, Stephen initially ascribes to an absolute belief in the morals of the church. From the above analysis, the hero, Stephen Dedalus, goes through long phases of hedonism and deep religiosity. He struggles to decide whether he should be loyal to his family, his church, his nation, or his vocation as an artist, and eventually adopts a philosophy of aestheticism, greatly valuing beauty and art. At the end of the novel, Stephen is imaginatively soaringin flight away from Ireland toward a future of unfettered artistic freedom. All these reflect the themes of this novel deeply-the development of individual consciousness, the pitfalls of religious extremism, the role of the artist and the need for Irish autonomy. By probing into the themes of the novel, a new door is opened to study a novel in many aspects.
