The land which was bought included everything between the Rocket Mountains and the Mississippi River except Texas. The main port for the second longest river system in the world was within this territory. Although few realized it at that time, the purchase included the vast forests of Arkansas and Minnesota, the oilfields of Oklahoma, the cornfields of Iowa, the wheat land of the Dakotas, the copper, silver, and gold of Colorado ad Montana, the rice and sugar of Louisiana. Without doubt, the Louisiana Purchase was one of the greatest events in the history of the United States. In a single action, a third class nation doubled its size, united its states and population, and became a great power in the world. Shortly after 1800, half a million Americans were living in the west of the Allegheny Mountains. The settlers in the towns and villages there needed trade. In order to get trade, they had to send their flour, tobacco, and whisky by water. There were no unable roads to the eastern cities and ports. The entire Mississippi, except its mouth at New Orleans, was open to the settlers. Spain owned New Orleans and the great Louisiana Territory to the west of the river. The western settlers solved their problems by getting the “right of deposit” from Spain. My eyes were fixed on the word “congratulations”. I dont ever remember smiling so wide. Then I looked at my financial package. The cost of Dream Schools tuition(学费), room and board was around 40,000 an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? My other choices were good, solid schools even if they werent as famous as my first choices. In my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a would-class writing. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiest. But as I was already careful with money, I wasnt sure what to do. One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planed to do was to smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself. At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with may great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring. As the president ended his speech , we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would spend the next four years right here. In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my “dream” university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me. 46. How did the author feel when he stated to read the letter? A. He was full of joy. B. He was lost in his dream. C. It is a question I worry. But I had to answer truthfully: “Absolutely. We are without a doubt near that day.” Look, were already doing it with airplanes.” Northrop Grummans Global Hawk takes off at an air base in the U.S., climbs to 50, 000 feet, flies to Australia, and lands at an Australian air base, where there is a grandstand filled with military official, -with no human pilot. The necessary technology is already here. We have radar technology that can be tied to cruise(巡航) control and brakes, which automatically adjusts your speed based on following distance and preprogrammed settings. Its still a little bit raw, but it does work great. The technology can allow cars and trucks to follow each other in very closely spaced roads. GPS can also change speed with location. Lets say youre in a state with a 75-mph limit and you cross into a state with a 65-mph limit. GPS knows that and can adjust your speed accordingly. Its not out of the question to imagine that someday soon youll be able to start the car, make proper settings, then turn the front seats around and play cards and eat lunch as if youre riding on a train. All in perfect comfort and safety, all the way to that nieces place in Chicago. If asked to estimate just how far time is, Id say a working system is ten years out, practice maybe 20 years. 51.
