Abstract Jane Eyre is the masterpiece of a famous British novelist Charlotte, it was created in the background of Victorian Era. Gone with the Wind is created by Mitchell, she is a famous female writer in America. The novel reflects the civil war of America. Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind are love stories, they are written in different periods. But both of them have some similarities. This paper uses the comparative analysis method, and focuses on the female image between Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind, analyzing the similarities and differences between Jane Eyre and Scarletts characters. They struggle with fate and have the courage to pursue their true love and independent life. For one thing, Jane Eyre still has the old female image even if she has the courage to struggle with the traditional society. But Scarlett totally becomes a new female image. Through the analysis of the character and destiny of the two female characters, this thesis will give some enlightenment to the modern women. In todays society, Jane and Scarlett set an example for modern women. It is justified by the fact that female friends now have much greater chance to pursue a higher status and financially can support themselves compared with Jane Eyre and Scarlett. At the same time, female consciousness has been improved increasingly. Key words: female consciousness; female image; comparison; influence; 摘 要 简爱和飘，一部是英国著名女作家夏洛蒂勃朗特以维多利亚时代为背景创作的，一部是美国女作家玛格丽特米切尔以美国南北战争及战后重建时期为背景创作的，虽然两部作品是两部不同时代不同国家反映爱情故事的作品，但是，两部小说具有一定的相似性。本文通过对比分析的手法，重点对简爱和飘这两部小说的女主人公形象进行分析，分析了性格的相似之处和不同之处。简爱和斯佳丽都敢于追求爱情，追求独立的生活，但是，简爱虽然有敢于反抗传统社会的精神但她在一些方面依旧保留着女性陈规形象，而斯佳丽成为当时女性的新形象。通过对两位女主人公性格及命运的分析，希望对现代女性有一些启示。在当今社会，简爱和斯佳丽为无数女性树立了榜样，事实证明，当今女性朋友与简爱和斯佳丽相比，有更多的机会追求更高的地位，在经济上也可以支撑她们自己，同时，女性意识也在不断提高。 关键词：女性意识；女性形象；对比；影响； I. IntroductionThe author of Jane Eyre, the interesting novel, is Charlotte Bronte. She is a famous novelist in England. Jane Eyre is Charlottes masterpiece. It is the authors personal experiences as a blueprint, through the description about a lonely girl, and successfully creates a new female image, who are dares to struggle and dare to pursue. This novel makes the reader closed to reality by using the first-person narrative styles. Furthermore, it is a novel with strong romantic color.Gone with the Wind is the work of American writer Margaret Mitchell which takes her ten years, she devoted all her efforts. This book reflects the Civil War in America and it is one of the most romantic love novels. Scarletts family education was under the influence of her parents, although she had good manners on surface, in fact, what hid under dignified appearance were her rebellion and stubborn character. Moreover, her unyielding habits can be fully shown on the spirit of resistance.Many scholars have attached great importance to these two novels at home and abroad. Much more studies have been done on Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind from the feminist perspectives since the publication of these two novels. Many scholars are concerned with Jane Eyre and Scarletts self-consciousness. For example, in 2010, On the Personality Characteristic of Jane Eyre, in this article, the protagonists resistance, independence and autonomy is to strive for independence and womens liberation. In 1987, H. Sommerset Maugham, he is a novelist of Britain, his book Charlotte Bronte and Jane Eyre points out that in the novel Jane Eyre embodies the awakening of feminist consciousness reflects the feminist consciousness against the patriarchal society (H. Sommerset Maugham，1987). In 1994, Stevie Jhonsome in his book Charlotte: Image of Feminism discusses Charlottes wealth equilibrium and the equality of personality (Stevie Jhonsome, 1994). These studies have the same characteristics: (1) the research mainly concentrates on the content, the theme and the idea of the work. (2) the study focus on feminist criticism and human characters (3) methods employed include the comparative study and the study of version. There is not much research made on the female images of Jane Eyre and Scarlett, in addition, after comparison, it reflects females position have a much higher standards. This paper is split into several parts. Chapter One is the general introduction, including the purpose and the meaning, the research status at home and abroad of this paper. The second chapter has a detail description of Jane Eyre and Scarlett, including the family conditions, social background and attitude towards marriage. Through the comparison, the different character trait appeared in front of us. The third part describes the female consciousness of Jane Eyre and Scarlett through their different behaviors and thoughts. The forth part gives some enlightenment to the modern women and introduces the significance of this paper. They tell women to pursue their liberty and social status by themselves. The final part is the conclusion of the thesis, a summary of major findings and limitations of the study being presented. II. The Comparison between Jane Eyre and Scarlett2.1 The Social Background of Jane Eyre and ScarlettJane Eyre lived in the Victorian Era. It is named after the Queen of England, Queen Vitoria. That era, which followed the regency time period, is characterized by reforms in the government. Besides, British capitalism is rising at that time. In the period, the British bourgeoisie took some measures in order to split the workers movement, but the womens social status did not really improve and women did not receive equal rights. On the other hand, the religion is very strict. So the particularly important theme in Jane Eyre is patriarchal. At that time, peoples thought is in the moral cultivation under the restriction of the religious etiquette. At that stage, women are a mere appendix to the man, whose are simply does not have the status. Just like Jane Eyre, she tries her best to claim her own identity within male-dominated society.Gone with the Wind, which vividly tells readers an interesting story occurred in American Civil War. The novel fully shows the fate of all kinds of characters in the development of social regulation. The fates of the different characters in the complex social environment reveal different destinies of different personalities in specific environment. It can be said that the fate of Scarlett is very fortunately, she is blessed by God. Although life gives her a lot of suffering, but Scarletts beauty and strong mind will be stronger because of the baptism of suffering. With increasingly reform and development of the new era, humans rights awareness in many countries began to wake up, in addition, women begin to pay close attention to their rights and status. Besides, many literature works and films have already expressed females pursuit of freedom and equality, urging women to get rid of the patriarchal society and unfair treatment. They can control their life by themselves. They are great. Life is fine, beautiful and enjoyable. People must appreciate it as much as possible.In the male-dominated society, women are particularly vulnerable members. By creating Scarlett, the author tried to create a tranformational female image from the traditional lady image became an independent women. In the early twentieth century, it intended to highlight the womens power.2.2 Jane Eyres and Scarletts Family Conditions 2.2.1 The Family Condition of Jane EyreJane Eyres life in Victoria England, unfortunately, her uncle died of illness. Jane Eyre often has to go hungry because her anut support the use of corporal punishment, mental or physical coercion, and verbal abuse. Besides, she does heavy labor. The subhuman conditions of work soon cause physical deterioration. The destitute life lets little Jane Eyre suffer serious harm in daily life. But Jane Eyre is very tenacious, not to bow to violence, challenging to the unfair treatment. She is not used to rough justice around there. When she was ten years old, she was sent to a boarding school. Here, she is still helpless. Jane Eyre thought that she can get rid of the troublesome life. But unexpectedly, the orphanage doctrine is very harsh. Jane Eyre had no political affiliation and the absence of dogma brought her criticism in her daily life. While Jane Eyre made full use of her time to learn language and painting. But dean is a good pretender. The children suffer from mental and physical torture at there. Because of the poor living conditions, her friend Helens body carry the virus that cause deadly lung disease. Because of the lack of cure, Helen died soon afterwards. Accordingly, Jane Eyre has to face the cruel death at an early age and eat the bread of affliction from others. On the other hand, her death awakens Jane Eyres self consciousness, and human beings free romance and the quest for true love get development.On the other hand, because of the miserable life, she is not like her friend and never yields to her fate. With each passing day, Jane Eyre gradually adapts to the life, she faces the reality bravely and conscientiously learns knowledge. After growing up, Jane Eyre becomes a tutor. She is full of confidence and eventually overcomes difficulties. Jane Eyre is great.2.2.2 The Family Condition of ScarlettDuring the period of the war, Scarlett found her value began to break away from the traditional of ladies, and realized the value of their own and had the passion to pursue happy life.Scarletts family background although different from Jane Eyre, she grows up in an upper class family, her father works hardly in despite of having some difficulties, leaving a lot of legacy. Her mother is a coast aristocrat and receives a good education. Before the war, Scarlett lived with a happy life. She was petted and held in the arms. The outbreak of the war cause Scarletts life changed forever. First, her husband died on the battle field, she was widowed. Scarlett had been shattered by her husbands death. The manor subsequently decline, only then did her father begin to have mental health problems. Where after her mother died. And her sister also suffered from illness, so Scarlett took all the burdens and pressure. In a word, all big changes in her young life had been suddenly defeated her. But when she was trapped in difficulties and setbacks, her behavior became a shock. With more difficulty, she would be stronger. In the flames of war, Scarlett risked her life in order to abide by Ashleys promise. After returning to the devastated manor, she became silent and patient when she faced with the death of her mother, at the same time, she had to face with her fathers mad. Scarlett was not knocked down, but tried her best to save her family. With the aftermath of the war, Scarlett had the profound understanding for real life. She clearly recognized that she needed to use intelligent methods to reach their targets in the real life. Faced with the utilitarian capital society, Scarlett thought what most important was to how to protect herself and her family so as to live a better life. One familys food and clothing are in the hand of her hands, reality does not allow her to bow. As she puts it, tomorrow is another day. She grew to be a strong, brave and responsible householder from an elegant, self-willed and tenacious aristocratic lady. Without telling herself this, Scarlet would have broken down in the very beginning of the war. Scarlet lives her life for the future and not the past. The young Scarlett changes her destiny and patriarchal system through her actions. 2.3 Jane Eyres and Scarletts Attitudes toward Marriage From the two peoples love concept and the positioning of life, they are completely different. In Jane Eyres ideological consciousness, only two people who are in love and respect each other can form a complete family. She was not able to marry him and resolutely refused. Her behavior reflects in two aspects, which escaped from true love and surrendered to the feudalism marriage. So, after meditation, she chooses to leave Thornfield Manor. This fully shows that she has the pursuit of self-respect, true love and freedom.On the other hand, when Jane Eyre was in trouble, John, the minister gave her a helping hand. Though Jane Eyre was very grateful to John for a long time to help her, but Jane Eyre continues to adhere to refuse him. Finally, Jane Eyre had a happy life with Rochester at last even if Rochester lost an eye and a hand. So this chapter carries out the study from two aspects relating to Jane Eyres behavior, one is her pursuit for harmonious marital life and true love, and the other is her pursuit for voice in the process of negotiating on sexism. In contrast, Scarlett dares to love and hate associated with more practical interests. With her natural beauty, she is good at tricking. She believes in absolutely romantic thoughts. For example, she should refuse others in the ball, because her behavior looks very strange on that occasion.Oh, I do not care! I do not care what they say! She whispered, as a sweet madness swept over her,Oh, all right, I know I am crazy but I do not care a bit what anybody says, I am so tired of sitting at home, I am going to dance and dance(Margaret, 1993:117). The social background also plays an important role in promoting Scarletts marriage. Scarlett is liberal at the front of love. She was madly in love with Ashley, Scarlett was still struggle for Ashley and never gave up. When she married with Rhett Butler, she thought it is not true love, so she just wisely considers the property conditions and social status of Rhett Butler. The broken of the civil war, has destroyed her home. She lost her luxurious life, but she also quickly grew up in difficulties. She began to search for her nature and rebel against the manners of the southern upper society. During this period, Scarlett is from a pleasure-seeking young women become a smart lady. She does not like other ladies in the strict social environment. The fact shows that the civil war has a great impact on Scarlett. Scarlett dominates her life and love from beginning to end. However, Ashley seems really different than the person she thought. Once he loses the shield of old nobility that he always relies on, he is useless. After Melanies death, Scarlett finally understanding the truth, but it is too late, Rhett Butler left disappointedly. As for Rochester, she could not tolerate his authority, furthermore, she could not tolerate that her body is under the control of Rochester.2.4 The Similarity of the Two Female CharacteristicsThe two different personalities lived in different periods, they were no relationships, but their images as if it could meet in readers mind. When they were in trouble, they always have courage to bear hardships and face it bravely. By close comparison, it finally arrives at the truth. Finally, a new heroine, whose expect the subversion to the traditional female concepts and asks for the independence and equal rights between men and women, has come out under Charlotte Brontes pen. In addition, Jane Eyre and Scarlett have a lot in common. In the transition period between the traditional thoughts and the independent new female images, the two heroine thoughts not only entail the traditional ideas but also demonstrate the modern thoughts.
