It was a career move for my husband, and our 20-year-old daughter was feeling adventurous and decided to come, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79-year-old mother suffered a stroke(中风).Being strong and independent, she continues to live at home with the help of social services. But she couldnt look after the garden. I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organisation offering volunteer help. Friends asked me what I planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would be looking for a volunteer position with a gardening charitable organisation. Imagine my surprise when I found just the organisation I had been looking forEasy Care Gardening( ECG) !There are several reasons why I volunteer for ECG. Firstly, as a newcomer to Australia I meet many great people who, like me, volunteer some of their time. We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others. Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky enough to explore Sydneys North Shore that I might not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise. Finally, there are all those wonderful people we call “clients(客户)”but are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and the stories they have to tell the family histories, where they come from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia. I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each one is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family. Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney.21. Why did the author move to Sydney?A. Her husband would work there. B. She planned to volunteer there.C. She was very keen on adventures . D. She had to look after her sick mother.22. What made the author choose to be a gardening volunteer?A. The popularity of ECG. . B. The tips of her friends.C. Her own experience. . D. Her gardening skills.23. What do the volunteers at ECG have in common?A. They make friends with their clients. B. They like to explore Sydneys North Shore.C. They are of similar agesandbackgrounds. D. They axe kind-hearted with the same interest.24. What does the underlined word one in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Client. B. Garden. C. Reason. D. Joy.BWhen the natural climate changes due to global warming, it can surely affect seals. The majority of them live in the Antarctic region so as the ice is melting, their natural habitat can be seriously affected. These changes dont take place overnight. They can be the result of many years of additional temperatures in the area. The seals then have to find ways to adapt.Seals depend on the cool air currents to bring plenty of food for them. When the temperatures get higher t there is less and less food and the seal population starts to shrink. Mothers arenH healthy enough to feed their babies. Many of them end up abandoned as the mothers have to leave to find their own source of food. The fact that their desire to produce young can be changed by the warmer temperatures is frightening too. It is also believed that the warmer temperatures can allow different diseases and viruses to attack the seals. This is a huge concern as they can rapidly wipe out huge numbers of seals out there. However, these changes in climate and temperature arenH all bad for other species of seals. Scientists have found that those living in wanner climates are producing more young due to the changes. Research also shows that the females are moving further to find food and water. When they are out of the reach of the governing males, they are more willing to accept the moves of other males in the group. This is good news too because it means that there will be more selection in the gene pool(基因库)for future generations. It can help the seals as a species adapt to change in their natural environment more easily. The climate change problem for seals is directly linked to humans. When we take action to change what we let out into the environment, we will make positive changes for the seals. However, it is going to take a very long time to reverse (彻底改变)the effects of what has already been done.25.What does the author regard climate changes for seals as?A. A double-edged sword. B. An unavoidable disaster for existence.C. A mirror of evolution. D. A requirement for more choice in the gene pool.26.What will happen to the seals in wanner climates?A. Their number will be on the increase. . B.The female seals will be in the lead.C. Their genes will change a great deal. D. The females will keep away from the males.27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. The Importance of Protecting Seals B. SealsAdaptation to Climate ChangeC. How Climate Change Affects Seals. D. Why Are Seals Becoming Less and LessCLack of electricity and resources in disadvantaged regions around the world means no centrifuge (离心机)in medical labs. Now, a simple new 20-cent invention could change all that. Its based on an unusual source of inspiration:the whirligig(陀螺).Manu Prakash is a physical biologist at Stanford and the inventor of the new product. When he visited Uganda in 2013 he found that the clinics had neither centrifuges nor the electricity to power them. He realized that he needed to design a human-powered centrifuge that costs less than a cup of coffee. When he returned to Stanford, Prakash began brainstorming ideas with his assistant, Saad Bhamla. They quickly concentrated on toys like yo-yos and whirligigs. One night I was playing with a button and string. And out of curiosity, I set up a high-speed camera to see how fast a button whirligig would spin. I couldnt believe my eyes, Bhamla recalled. The button was spinning at 10,000 to 15 ,000 revolutions per minute (rpm). The pair began designing small hand-powered centrifuges based on the whirligig principle. Their final model was the Paperfuge. It spins at 125 ,000 rpm, the same as a centrifuge costing $ 1,000 to $ 5,000.The Paperfuge is made of a disk of paper coated in a polymer(聚合物).The disk is attached to two pieces of wood or PVG pipe via strings. When the strings are pulled, the disk in the middle spins. This acts as a centrifuge for a blood sample attached to the center of the disk. The team describes their work in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering.Once the blood is separated, it needs to be examined by a microscope. Luckily, several years ago Prakash also created the Foldscope. It is a $1 paper microscope with optical quality similar to conventional microscopes that will begin distribution in 2018.28. Why did Manu Prakash invent the Paperfuge?A. To help the clinics in Uganda. B. To make traditional toys popular again.C.To make it affordable for poor areas. .D. To transport electricity more conveniendy.29. Which of the following words can best describe Manu Prakash?A. Creative and sympathetic . .B. Ambitious and determined.C.Brave and considerate. .D. Sensitive and modest.30. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the Paperfuge?A. How much it costs. .B. How it works.C. What it is made of. . D.
