For the 19th century, a good portion of the course hours will be spent on examining English romantic poetry by reading and studying the selected texts of the major poets of the school including Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron, and Keats. Two Victorian poets, Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning will be briefly discussed before we move on to Victorian novels which will be discussed in general manner. For the early 20th century part, the focus will be on the key figures of high modernism such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, and T. S. Eliot. The selected texts include short stories, poems, extracts of novels, and literary essays. Dramatic works are not included in this course for study largely because the periods in question are dominated by poetry and novel. The main purpose of this course is to get students acquainted with a range of canonic texts of English literature from the periods in question. Through reading and discussing the selected primary texts, students are expected to have some immediate knowledge of English literature in recent times and at the same time to develop their literary insights and skills in interpretation based on textual analysis. The course will also feature a critical inquiry into a host of issues and themes that inform the works of the periods under examination, such as the romantic perceptions of nature, innocence vs experience, imagination and the exotic, class consciousness, sexuality, beauty, death, etc. The teacher of this course particularly encourages intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and eagerness to contribute and share ideas in class. 英国历史(British History, 讲座型)主讲教师:钟美荪通过系统学习英国历史,了解英国社会结构、政治制度、文化民情等方面的发展脉络,开掘学生的兴趣和学习动力,以进一步深入探讨英国为现代社会发展所做出的独特贡献。同时,由于本课程为全英语课程(英文教材、英文讲授),可通过此课程提高学生阅读英文学术著作的能力和英语专业听课能力。本课程采用牛津英国史(英文原版著作)为教材,教学内容涉及从原始社会至18世纪的英国历史;重点为英国社会结构和政治制度的演变。Readings in Shakespeare(莎士比亚戏剧选读,讲座型)主讲教师:Marcia ValeThis course will offer students a close guided reading of some of Shakespeares plays. We will begin by considering Shakespeares life, and the state of the theatre in London at his time.We will then look closely at five plays, and each one represents a different type of play: romance, tragedy, comedy, Roman plays and history/chronicle.We shall discuss what these different types of drama meant to an Elizabethan or Shakespearean audience.We shall follow each play scene by scene, concentrating especially on the language of certain passages.We shall also consider characterisation, themes and plot.We shall ask the interesting question: why do Shakespeares plays seem to have such universal qualities and popularity?Students will be asked to read five plays by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet (a romance, a disaster, but not truly a tragedy); Macbeth (tragedy); Twelfth Night (comedy); Julius Caesar (Roman play); and Henry V (history).Course Requirements: Students are required to read the five plays on the reading list. There will be two midterms, in which students will be asked to write a clear interpretation of a selected passage from one play, passages which will have been studied in class.The final examination will cover the remaining (but not necessarily the last) three plays, and students must be prepared to answer questions concerning TWO of those plays.In the final, one question will be on a passage, and the other will be a more general essay topic concerning such matters as themes, language, characterisation.All answers in the three exams will be given in essay form.First midterm 25%; second midterm 25%; Final exam 50%. Attendance is obligatory. Attendance checks will be undertaken. Unsatisfactory attendance will result in a Fail.Western Images of China(西方文献中的中国形象,讲座型)主讲教师:Colin MackerrasThe course has the following aims: To teach students to know and think about Western images of China; To be able to analyse Western images of China; To gain more cross-cultural understanding; and To understand some ways in which scholars conceive images of China.There is a total of 15 teaching weeks, with 2 hours lectures in all weeks given by the instructor. Some of the lectures will include discussion of individual texts or pictures showing images of China. From Week 4 on, there should be an additional class, a seminar. The class should be divided into three groups, with each group having one seminar every third week, a total of four seminars for each group.Canadian Literature and Culture (加拿大文学与文化,讲座型)主讲教师:耿力平In this course the students will read poems and stories (from a Course Reader) by a variety of Canadian authors living and writing in different historical periods of Canada. Careful readers will not only acquire a literary perspective of the wonderful Canadian works, but also gain a degree of cultural awareness of different aspects of the Canadian society. The students are expected to discuss their findings and views on Canadian literature and culture both in class and in a number of in-class essays. In short, knowledge of the Canadian society and ability to discuss literary as well as social issues concerned are the chief objectives of this course.The students are expected to attend all sessions, complete all reading assignments, participate in group/class discussions, contribute to a group presentation, and take the mid-term test and the final examination.Social Problems(社会问题,讲座型+社会调查)主讲教师:李今朝This course examines some major social issues and social problems in contemporary China and the United States. The topics include health problems, family problems, population problems, gender problems, poverty and wealth, crime and violence, as well as environmental degradation and resource depletion. It is a skills-based course that emphasizes field research and the application of sociological perspectives and methods in defining and exploring social issues and problems. The final projects are team work that include such topics as “The Origin of 剩男&剩女as Social Issues,” “The History and Changes of 魏公村,” “Food Safety in China and the U.S.,” and “Environmental Policies in China and the U.S.” A student who hasnt taken any introductory sociology course or social sciences methodology course should be prepared for additional homework in order to be a capable member in the final project teams.This course also stresses interactive teaching and student-centered learning. So, be prepared to lead class discussions and address each others ideas and opinions meaningfully and critically in class. 四年级:American Cinema & Culture(美国电影与文化,讨论型)主讲教师:Joanne Cheng(程娟)This course is designed to study main aspects of American film production and film culture since sound era. It will provide a survey of the wealth of styles, forms, purposes, and approaches to filmmaking that developed and emerged. Hollywood has obviously served as the dominant mode of filmmaking in this country, a significant diversity of other filmmaking practices have thrived outside of it.
